  1. Sounds like a government trying to deflect  Just had a quick look at the comments (in the PerthNow section, not sure if they are the same comments in each section?) and most are pretty much against banning a breed, there are some saying about time but I would guess the majority are against such laws.
  2. Maybe she has just recently found out she is pregnant? And maybe it is an unexpected pregnancy. I don't know if I could cope with a 13 month old husky and a new born baby! I think she is being very responsible. I hope she reconsiders and contacts the breeder though.
  3. Is this getting any sort of media attention in Victoria? The 'breed standard' I mean. Also I see that vets can sign off to say what breed a dog is. Are vets going to be willing to do this for people? Will they be put off by the thought of legal action down the track? I have a mixed breed mutt and if I lived in Victoria, I would be getting a DNA test done at the vets. I know that they are questionable but would the government really challenge it for a dog where the owners obviously take their responsibilities seriously? I did one for my dog and it came backs as one quarter mastiff but she could quite easily be mistaken for a number of breeds. Vet said she was a 'heinz' variety. What about the council rangers? Have they expressed their views on this? Some won't want to take peoples family pets away from them. Very sad day for Victoria.
  4. Yep, we have the same problem with our Stafford. Hubby has pulled it all out as she kept eating it! We also had the same problem with our previous dog and we took it out for him as well. Not sure how old your dog is but ours is almost two. We hand water until they don't care about it anymore, usually a couple of years. Not a great solution but the only one we could come up with.
  5. I think that most of the problem comes from the fact that people look to the US for their 'facts and figures' where the pitbull is considered to be any bull breed.
  6. Very long thread, so I will apologise in advance if this link has already been posted. The article is about the failure of BSL. I understand that the NCRC has a vested interest but the article itself is sound in my opinion as it does cite its references. I tried to find the link of the Netherlands report about BSL but you had to pay for it! http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/uploaded_files/tinymce/World-wide%20Failure%20of%20BSL.pdf
  7. I agree PetSitters, all the tough boys here have pitbulls  Most of them are probably crossbreeds, I would say they all of them are but to be quite honest I am a little fuzzy on what the breed actually is....... Why don't the NSW dog attack statistics reflect any attacks from the APBT? I suppose it could go under unidentified breed but that goes against anything media reports where there are lots of attacks from APBT. Unless there were none in that quarter? http://www.dlg.nsw.g...-%202010-11.pdf
  8. I agree, my two must have the cleanest ears out. Now I have never tasted dog ear wax but I'm pretty sure it couldn't be pleasant!
  9. Also I think that people call anything that has a staffy head, a pitbull now.
  10. You must get a hankering for a puppy in June!
  11. I'm no expert but can you put him in the car and take him somewhere unfamiliar? It might distract him from worrying about where she is. You can try some focus training once he is used to being away from her.
  12. You know I had never heard of a pitbull until they brought in BSL!
  13. But there are bad owners in many common breeds, yet not all common breeds have been mentioned in this thread... Just read through this huuuuge thread and can't think of what common breed hasn't been mentioned? BTW I have a healthy respect for all dogs. We just try to stay away from them all and this is so that I can protect my own! We did basic obedience and now just do our own training. We have a group of about 6/7 dogs that we socialize with, on occasion, not often. I walk with a stick, any offlead dogs that get too close, cop it!
  14. If it was anonymous I wouldn't get too anxious about it. If I was the RE agent I wouldn't have taken the complaint without a name and address, I would have explained that a complaint can only be lodged if details were given even if they weren't passed onto you. If they went to the council about the barking dogs they would have to give name and address!
  15. How do you tell if growth plates are closed? Xrays?
  16. Perhaps he should have bought one of these instead http://boingboing.net/2009/07/30/adult-toy-for-dogs.html ;) :D :D Love the comments below the article! 'They'll grow hair on their paws'
  17. Another vote for Weatherbeetas, my two have them but it doesn't rain much here!
  18. If the owner of the attacking dog denies his dog is in the wrong, how do they prove otherwise?
  19. Ooh I don't know if I could do that! He is bit too old and fragile. He is going well with the dremelling, I am going to clip again on the weekend. Ha Ha CW EW, my two love cheese!
  20. After having had a white dog and now having one black/brindle dog and one chocolate brown dog I will always prefer dark over light. Reason? For some strange reason white hair seems to show up on everything yet dark hair seems to blend in. I used to have to vacuum every day with the white dog but with these other two I can get away with every couple of days. I know they still shed but it doesn't seem to show as much as white fur.
  21. They are fairly long, the dew claws have started to curl. That's why I wanted to know how often I could clip some off. Having said that I did take a fair bit off by doing a small bit at a time. I might battle on for a few weeks with the clipping and dremelling and see how we go. When you are a fifteen year old dog, going to vet can't hurt
  22. Thanks Erny, they are quite thick as well. I do have a Dremel so I might try that in between cuts. He has a couple of white nails but they are mostly black, maybe if I keep an eye on the white ones and the quick in those ones it might give me an idea. Mmm, Dxenion, that guide says that if I do it every few days the quick should recede. It might be wise to do a trip to the vet, I think and then I can keep on top of it after vet advice.
  23. I am helping a friend with an elderly dog that has long nails. I have cut the nails no problems (well a few, he doesn't like his nails being clipped but we wrapped him in a towel and it was over and done before he knew it!) How long in between cuts can I wait? Can I do it every few days or should I wait a least a week? He is a 15 year old JR cross.
  24. I have the same problem. Mine ate their snooza bed. The best one I have found so far is one that has a hessian outside (it doesn't have a tag and I can't remember the brand). I then throw a couple of blankets on it for comfort. I can see they have had a nibble on them but so far (about 3 months) so good.
  25. Thank you so much, PM sent. I will let you know how it works
