  1. Maybe try the surrounding towns such as Bright or Myrtleford? http://www.allambiecottages.com.au/index.php?D=35
  2. Yep, I dread going to the vet, wish that I had a mobile vet here that did blood work.
  3. Lol, when I am cutting up strawberries, I have a volunteer that gobbles down all the green tops
  4. Personally I never have or will take my dogs to an off leash park. But having said that I believe that there should be more so that people are able to exercise their dogs, just because a few spoil it, we shouldn't punish the majority. I have friends who have never had any issues with off leash parks. I was recently in Adelaide and stayed near a dog beach (well I assume it was, there were plenty of dogs!), I would walk there for about half an hour every day for seven days and never saw an issue.
  5. What a lovely clip, I have only seem them in pictures and often have a longer coat. His feet look like he is wearing shoes  He is quite the star! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_(dog)
  6. Well, my tibbies bucked the trend in that their hackles went up & they took off chasing a thief who was coming into our house. The same night, the same thief broke into another house up the road...& he had to step over their staffy, Elvis, who slept thro' the whole thing. My SBT has let the power meter reader into the front yard (I have a 6ft fence and gate) without a sound, I only noticed when I heard him walk on the verandah to the meter box, I watched her follow him to the gate, waggling her tail. I noticed her one day at the front door waggling her tail, the delivery guy had come to the front door and my front door bell wasn't working. But she didn't even bark!! She is useless as a guard dog. Mind you, no bird will land in my yard while she is around, which is handy..........not! Thankfully my mutt is a better guard dog, but she will only bark and will probably run away if any intruder lifted their arm or a weapon. But to be honest, a dog that would have a go at a human would probably be too much dog for me.
  7. Because in the US any bull breed is called a pitbull. Edit: Meant to say how funny is that!
  8. It is 3.75 million dogs owned, not bred every year.
  9. Mine got a rash when she was a puppy. I took her to vet thinking that it could be ringworm, it wasn't but it eventually went by itself. It never bothered her though.
  10. That does make it up a bit hard Is she a nice dog, maybe put her back in her yard when he is out? Not sure what the temperament is of your dog and his, but is there a way that they can 'learn' to be 'friends', if you know what I mean  ?
  11. Did the ranger at least make him register his dog? I am not sure about Vic but here in WA, it is not mandatory to have dogs desexed or microchipped. Annoying people will always be annoying! I would try to avoid him and his dog.
  12. I think that it is like a lot of dog behaviours, it depends on the dog. I have been told, not sure how true it is, that barking at the fence is similar to leash reactiveness. And it is also a self rewarding behaviour, the dogs barks, the person/dog/thing goes away.
  13. Not having a go but would like to say that if you walked passed my house you would see my dogs in the (fenced) front yard and you also wouldn't see them being walked. I drive my dogs to where I walk them and quite often I take one at a time as I do one on one training, so I am driving back and forward twice. Sorry, just want to put it out there that just because you don't see dogs walking in your area, doesn't mean that they aren't being walked somewhere. I have a SBT and a rescue mutt and live in a house we are renovating, so people often think that young 'bogans' live at the house, when we are a middle aged couple whose kids have left home. People are very quick to judge. My dogs are kept out the back when we aren't home and left to roam around the whole house when we are there. We do lock the front gate. Quite a few people here leave the dogs out the front for security and I can understand why, but my dogs are too important to me to risk anything happen to them. Including someone chucking over bait into the front yard where your dogs are free to roam? Unfortunately, people can throw bait from almost anywhere and have it land in our yard, back and front. Our town has laneways in the back for a lot of the area, so most people are in the same boat, which is why they also have fenced front yards. And why the gates are locked. I suppose if someone is determined to do the wrong thing they will, but we have lived here for four years now and haven't had any problems, fingers crossed.

  15. You cannot force people to be educated. No legislation about licensing people to own dogs will work. No amount of education will help stupid people. So what do we do? This is why I'd like a licence system and yard check. If people had to do something and pay a fee before getting a dog it would at least reduce impulse buys. naw the dicks would still go out and get their dogs. Personally my view is the same as Sheridan's can't educate stupid. IMO the laws we already have need to be enforced before adding any new ones. How long has NSW had compulsory microchipping? Over 10 years and plenty of dogs still aren't chipped. The ones from the bloke around the corner with the "staffy" bitch who is bred to the mate up the roads "red nose" dog etc. Agree with this, they can't/don't police the current council registration and leash laws. I mean, BSL has been in some states for quite some time and not even that is enforced correctly.
  16. Staffordshire Bull Terriers aren't a banned breed in Ireland. The Irish Staffordshire bull Terrier, not to be confused with a SBT bred in Ireland, is banned as a pitbull type by the U.K. As is the Amstaff b.t.w. I am reasonablely sure the SBT is banned in Germany, along with the Bull Terrier & the Bull mastif. The concern for these breeds now is Germany is pushing for a common law for the entire E.U. regarding breed restrictions. If successful (unlikely) it would mean the SBT would be banned all E.U countries. I am a little bemused that a veterinarian could simply declare a dog to be an Amstaff. If push came to shove I doubt such an identification would be upheld by a court of law. Such a challenge would be interesting though. An Amstaff without ANKC registration papers as proof of breed is, for all intents & purposes, a pitbull. In Ireland the SBT must be muzzled and leashed in public. Edit: I think that you are confused about the 'Irish' SBT, there is no mention of it in the Irish dog laws. Is it even a recognised breed anywhere?
  17. I have no issue with it. Like others have said, it would have to made very clear for potential buyers, not only the initial purchaser but any resale would need to have the terms clearly stated very early on in the marketing. And that would probably be my main reason not to buy in that sort of development, plenty of Australians have dogs, may turn out to be hard to resell. Edited to add: So no dogs, but they are allowed cats? Of course cats don't kill wildlife
  18. I don't have an old dog but I have one that was stinky! We have the two dogs and both were on the same diet (VAN with kangaroo and RMB's) but one always went back to smelling very doggy a couple of days after a bath whereas the other one was fine for ages. One is a mutt and the other is a staffy (the stinky one). Even her breath smelt. Anyway, I started them on coconut oil and although I didn't put her on for the smell issue, I believe that it has helped. After bathing it is about a month before she starts smelling doggy and her breath is great. I don't know if the oil has helped the skin and digestion, but whatever it is, I am sticking to it.
  19. Maybe you could leave a kong? I have always had dogs that love to chase birds out of their yard!
  20. Sorry for your loss She certainly looks like a grand Lady.
  21. Oops sorry, as the link didn't work my quick search came up with the amstaffs, I think? Anyway, melzawelza knows her stuff Edit: interesting to note, a couple of those amstaffs look no different to the one pitbull they have listed.
  22. I think that you have basically answered your own question! They can't determine whether or not it is a pitbull or an unpapered amstaff. Just because it has a red nose doesn't mean it is a pitbull. I believe (not 100% sure) that the ranger has the power to declare whether or not the dog is a restricted breed, obviously Blacktown Holding facility has determined the dogs on their website are not pitbulls.
  23. Getting another dog to keep another dog company as the sole reason is when the problems start in my opinion. I have two dogs that can't be left out in the yard together when we go out. They have to be penned in the patio area (concreted area with a small dirt patch) or separated when left in the yard. The reason? They get up to a lot of mischief  Gigantic holes, plants ripped out, washing pulled off the line, they even pulled all the rubbish (not household rubbish) out of the trailer one time. When separated they must just lie down and go to sleep because the place is immaculate. We had to get the patio fenced off and have the yard fenced so we could separate them, we will probably have to take this down when we want to sell the place! We were lucky to be able to do this but not all people would be able to.
