  1. We have a bit of a list, Primedogs, OH and I only agree on one name at the moment so that will probably be it but we will do some more discussing. I had a long list of mainly Star Wars related names to choose from :D as OH is a SW geek. At the moment the short list is Natasi (as in Imperial Admiral Natasi Daala, first woman to reach the rank of Admiral in the Imperial Navy - Star Wars lol) - This is OH's first choice Kandosii - Mandalorian word that means 'awesome' or 'great' lol, Star Wars again. Keldabe - Mandalorian home planet, you guessed it... Star Wars I like Kandosii, Kandi for short. I am working on it lol.
  2. LOVE those snow shots, lilli_star! Hope Max and Mars are feeling better, I bet it's really hard to keep them quiet! KTB, love those shots, hopefully Elbie will get used to snuggling with Hoover. He's quite big and such a handsome fellow :D I finally have a doggy picture to share, our little girl, born on Friday night. The next 8 weeks are going to go so slowly lol. We just about have everything we need now, I am so excited, but very, very impatient lol Teeny Tiny Dobermann
  3. Just a flying visit as I have had my parents up visiting yesterday and today (went to West Side Story with Mum yesterday ). Will catch up on everything properly later but wanted to say that Hoover is gorgeous, KTB! LOVe love love his markings!
  4. It's so hard to wait, but so exciting! Definitely need whippet puppy pics! Fingers crossed for you! ;) When will you know if you get a puppy from this litter? How gorgeous! I really like the look of the Vallhunds, but I've never seen one in person. What got you interested in them? If you don't mind my asking?
  5. I think he's growing into a handsome dog, doesn't seem overly lanky to me! More like an adolescent boy Thanks, Tosca is my favourite Puccini . Apparently there used to be a chocolate bar called a Tosca too, most people think she was named after that lol, but I'd never heard of it!
  6. Thanks everyone! I was lucky with Odin that I had lots of friends with dogs at the time and he used to play with them as a puppy so he was pretty well socialised. We did obedience at home but he only knew basic things like sit, drop, stay, 'go to your mat', fetch, that sort of thing, oh and housetraining of course. I have to say it really never occurred to me to take him to an organised class type situation. Now, I only know a couple of people with dogs, and none I'd really want around my dog, I definitely want to do obedience etc but I am in two minds about puppy preschool classes. Must be reading all the horror stories lol. KumaAkita, it must be something about spitz breeds lol. I used to let Odin jump up on me, if he did it gently and just put his paws on my shoulders, no knocking me down! ETA - Koalathebear, Elbie seems to have grown so quickly! Puppy phase really doesn't last long. And for photo time, this is my cat Tosca who loves my drop spindle lol, though she makes spinning a little difficult.
  7. Exciting!! What breed is Hugo? Any pics? Love the name!
  8. Happy Birthday KumaAkita You know, it's funny, I have a friend who has a dog named Kuma, but she's a Shih Tzu! I think it's Japanese for bear? I always thought it was an odd name for a small chinese dog lol. I do have a good friend in QLD who has an akita named Toshi, which I believe is Japanese too but I think it's a girls name. Must ask! Fingers crossed, Wizzle! I have an obedience question for you all, since all seem to be into it . At what age did you start classes with your dogs? And what sort of things did you do at home before you started classes? While I have had dogs before I've never actually been involved in a class situation.
  9. Darcy had a small cut/bite mark on his leg that got infected. He had xrays and antibiotics etc and they wouldn't cover it. I was living with OH's parents at the time and the bite was caused by one of their dogs. So it was determined that since it happened at home, amongst dogs that live together, it was apparently our fault and they wouldn't cover it. To some extent they are right but I found out that they don't actually cover anything if they can claim it is caused by a person, so in other words if Darcy were in a fight with any other dog it would be considered the owners fault and we would be expected to get compensation from them. If he got hit by a car it would be my fault because he wasn't contained. So basically any injury that can be attributed to human error is not covered. So pretty much everything, is not covered. So I figured it was a waste of money. I was paying $42 per month. Wow, that's rough! Thanks. I would never have considered that accidents wouldn't be covered.
  10. We are looking into this at the moment. LMBC what sort of injuries did they not pay for?
  11. Good lord, have you guys seen this? Twitter for dogs, there's a dog tag type thing and depending on activity it sends out tweets. How odd http://puppytweet.com/index.html
  12. Interesting! I'm a bit unsure of how to handle the flea issue myself. The cats get flea treated once a year when they come home from the cattery, just in case. Though I've never seen a flea on any of them. They are inside cats (though they have an outdoor enclosure they get to from a cat door in the window of the spare room) and don't go anywhere to pick up fleas. I wonder though, since dogs are more likely to pick them up and bring them home, should I then start regularly flea treating all the furries in the house? Poor Elbie! Ahhh, we go 6am now, that half an hour makes a lot of difference! Do you live near us? The walking issue will be interesting here. As in when to walk. OH is a shiftworker, and since I only work one day a week I adjust my schedule to his. So one week I am up at 4:30am and in bed around 8pm, and the other week I am up around 9:30am and in bed around 1am or 2am. I'd like (eventually, especially when it's hot here) to be able to go for walks around 5am on early weeks and midnight-ish on late weeks. No idea how the dog will adjust to such a weird shedule though. Anyone's dogs watch tv? My cat Jinx always races to the tv when there are birds on it. Even when I mute the sound she will try to catch them.
  13. I was going to ask the same thing I was going to ask the same thing Fostering maybe..?? My folks have two cats, Silver and Tiger who are 12 , but my folks travel at least 6 months every year (usually closer to 9) and Silver and Tiger move in here while Mum and Dad are gone. So while they're not really my cats they sort of are. So they're my part-time cats They're just as happy here as at their real home, and I love them as much as I love my own cats. ETA: We've been doing this for about 7 years, it seems to work well!
  14. Hopefully all going well our puppy will be coming home mid December. Not actually born yet I already feel like I've been waiting forever! Haha! I'm going to take so many photos I may very well break the internet by posting them all I've actually tentatively booked the puppy into www.houndstoothstudio.com.au Alex takes amazing shots, check out the gallery! I was wondering why everyone kept saying that until I forgot to log in once and saw that the default # of posts per page is x and I changed mine to be 40 posts per page so I have 'less pages' in total. If that makes sense. ETA: Random - is cute. Those eyes! I wonder if he survived, poor lil thing. Awwww... that made me go all melty. And since this is a photo thread, here are my two full-time cats (I also have two part-time cats who are here 6-9 months of the year) Jinx (curled up) 'Her Manic Majesty' and Tosca (white cravat) 'The Great Grump-A-Lump'
  15. Absolutely, me too. I remember having a big family dinner one day at my OH's Grandparent's place in the US. I think the only thing on the table that was not provided by the family themselves were the dairy and dessert items. Everything else, the meat, the veggies etc had been either grown or hunted by someone in the family. A pretty good way to live if you ask me. I can't kill things, not even bugs (though my Uncle-In-Law assured me that if I was hungry enough, I'd be able to lol) but I've been involved in the hunting and then the 'processing' (for want of a better word) of animals after someone else has killed them (rabbits and deer mostly) and it has given me a real appreciation for animals that provide our food and it's very much affected where and what meat I purchase for my own table. Much more than if my only experience with meat had been a clean, wrapped steak from Coles. Anyway, for whoever ends up going with Nekhbet, have fun and enjoy those bunnies! eta: left out "dinner"
  16. Great photos! I particularly love the last one of Delta, beautiful!
  17. Hahaha, Malamute puppies kind of look like fat wombats too This is my guy Odin when he was a puppy. I think this was the first day he came home (It was a long time ago!) He was killed in 2003, and it's taken me this long to be able to want another dog, and I am now quite excited about eventually bringing our Dobe puppy home
  18. Great shots and funny stories in here Particularly love the 'how you got your dog' stories My puppy won't be born for another 3 weeks I am living vicariously through you lot
  19. You can get dilute red border collies that are a wheaten sort of colour Same as blue BC are dilute black dogs Thanks mirawee! He really was a stunning dog. Kind of took my breath away, pity a Border Collie isn't the dog for me yet, anyway! I did see you then Next time there are DOLers I will introduce myself (and OH 'cause he was there too). I enjoyed the morning, and it was good to put to use some of the things I have learned here about different dogs, like being able to identify the Borzoi etc. Just not the Border Collie apparently I still have lots to learn!
  20. Well I know where you have been then! The Dingos were gorgeous weren't they?! They were great! They had quite a 'presence', very different from normal domestic type dogs oh Poop Rav you should have said WHO you were I love meeting DOLers so I know who is who, I met Golden Rules Baby Goldie and NO Golden Rules! Rach and her TAFE mates cleaned up all the prizes from Houndstooth Studio!! even put my dogs collar and lead on, I was getting very scared near the end! lol I will next time, I was going to introduce myself but then wondered if it would be weird, like an internet stalker "Hello, I know you from the internet" I really loved seeing your dogs! Rach, I think I saw you then too Were you the pretty young girl with the puppy and the Xolo in the green (I think) coat? Maybe someone can help me with identifying a breed? I saw a lovely dog there (got cuddles) and he looked like a Border Collie but was a kind of blonde and white (like a Corgi colouring), now I've been looking at pics of Border Collies this morning and I can find tri-colour, red (which is a kind of rusty colour), black and merle. What is the blonde type colour? Was the dog even a Border Collie?
  21. Today I got lots of doggie cuddles, bought a lovely Dingo calendar and saw some beautiful Xolo's
