Comon Things People Dont Realise About Your Breed
KZs Mum replied to MonElite's topic in General Dog Discussion
My black pug is a purebred. Yes they do 'come in black'. No she's not a frenchie, and yes she's fit, not fat, and no not all pugs are fat. And pugs aren't terriors: they're just bred for companionship. Plain and simple: they don't really know what a 'prey' drive is. (anything you eat is 'prey'). AND they're not stupid. They are easily trainable. -
I have pugs....and I'm in Perth so it is 39 here today. Today and yesterday they have been inside with the aircon on. I had the cleaner come today (they are outside when the cleaner comes) and there was a baby crow outside that has apparently jumped out of it's nest without it's flight feathers! After several phone calls I have established that this is apparently completely normal behaviour and it will get it's flight feathers in a few days time - lucky my dogs weren't interested in it in the backyard - the poor mum and dad crows were having a ripe fit!

NO NO NO!!! They have a huge amount of bacteria that can cause infection. I had a lady at work who let her dogs lick her wound from her total knee replacement: It was so bad they had to take the prosthesis out, put antibiotics in for a few weeks (while technically she didn't have a knee) and then re-do the whole thing again. NOT a good idea!
-
My housemate's lab did this once. She was fine (and ate about 10?), so try not to stress too much. Perhaps make sure that YOU don't miss any though otherwise you could have more than fur babies!!
-
If you were thinking about bulking out his food......One thing I learnt recently from the dietician at work is that butternut pumpkin is not the same biochemically as regular pumpkin. It has calories that count!!! I think that it would be really hard for me to feed this little guy what he was 'used' to.....I think I would give a normal meal for his ideal weight. Poor little guy. He's one lucky little chunky monkey!

Thanks Wizzle and Rommi N Lewis: certainly one way to feel very silly in deed with this! It was right in her top lip under her nose, and being a pug I was worried about swelling in that area! I couldn't believe she was fine once the sting was removed - she's currently trying to barge the lap top off my lap and replace it with herself of course
-
Thanks yes I did find a recipe....for it. Also finally got in contact with our vet who gave us the dosage for antihistamine. She is fine though......as soon as the sting was out she was absolutely fine. Little Terror.
-
My Pug has just attempted eating a bee! I have removed the stinger from the fulcrum of her top lip and hse appears absolutely fine now (approx. 5 mins) I have been trying to call all the local vets in the area to find out if we should do anything else? I am concerned re: swelling obviously as she is a pug and has probably been stung on her muzzle? Does anyone know the dosage of antihistamine that I can give her? I have 25mg here at home.

Have You Ever Been Busted........

I have also been caught letting my temper get a bit out of control with my parents god/dog. He is not trained AT ALL and after pulling for about 45 mins I sort of said/yelled gruffly: "MAX, walk like a HUMAN!!!!" to which some elderly people got a good laugh! I realise that would've done absolutely nothing to change Max's behaviour.........and the lack of training still gets to me every time I visit my parents. Very embarrassing though! -
I put too much human emotion into ours as well. Unfortunately one of ours is so bossy towards the other one that she even herds her (usually away from us....), so the poor little bugger can't even walk anywhere in our house some days without being bullied by the older one. On these days it is very hard for me.......I find it extremely difficult to watch so I usually end up separating them and one gets time with my husband, and the other with me.....or I take them for separate walks. It REALLY pushes my buttons though!

Stopping Unwanted Behaviour Between Dog & Cat
KZs Mum replied to TYLER23's topic in General Dog Discussion
:D Apologies: I don't have anything solid to add. Surely if you let them keep going one would have enough and get the message across to the other one? -
Luckily mine hate the rain. What do they do on rainy days? Stay inside with the heater on....... I have trouble convincing them to even leave their bed. They are happy to do this.......needless guess the breed?? pugs!
-
I think all animals do it - it's a reflex.......humans do it too until they're about 5 months old!
-
and at least you know about it early in his life so you can hopefully prevent problems down the track!
-
Don't talk ill of physio......they creep up in the most unlikely places AND most dogs that I see following their owners hip/knee replacements are amazing - so much so that it's 'normal' to me that dogs are like this!
-
Puggerup he looks amazing!!! Good on you!!! My two pugs get different amounts of food (one gets 3/4 cup the other 1/2 per day of RC) and they are about 7.7 kg. My Mum nearly cried when she was staying with us that they get so little!!! If they've even had a chicken wing: they only get a few bikkies as an evening meal (and I mean approx 5). I know you feel mean. You're not. You're saving his life, and giving him a QUALITY life.

Dolers With Brachycephalic Breeds Of Dogs

Oh no: my pugs choking is my worst nightmare! I am so sorry to hear you lost yours from choking. I feed mine chicken wings at least once a week, and also lamb shanks. I am a bit paranoid about cartilage that they could chew off bones and get dislodged so I remove them from the lamb bones. Our vet strongly encourages us to feed chicken wings/frames but I always keep a close eye on them while they're eating. I am not sure if the likelihood of choking really increases with bones per se or any food?? and another thing I wouldn't feed my two small dense bones such as spine/tail mainly because of the risk the little horrors will swallow them whole and end up with a bowel obstruction! -
People Who Work Fulltime And Have A Puppy.
KZs Mum replied to Whipitgood's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ours were at home alone during the day apart from the first few days. Toys on a rotational basis, chew toys etc. were the way to go. Initially the pup was indoors only - and they're fine. We did the newspaper toilet training thing....and it worked....mostly. Our two know when we're going to work, and they have a sleepout and a huge backyard to access, they have toys, each other and different bones a couple of times a week. I also walk them before and after work so they get some 'quality time' prior to us heading off for work. If I sneak home even an hour before I am due: they're asleep! and most times don't even hear me come in! It works for us.......IMO breeders that say they won't sell to people that work fulltime are kidding themselves - wouldn't you much rather have dogs who are still happy/health and their owners be able to afford proper care and food for their dogs? -
Some food for thought for you would be: why did she slip in the first place? And how can you prevent it happening again? Look at the risks around your home for her, then modify as appropriate. I know some dogs that wear grip shoes as they're on floorboards, other options are putting mats down on tiles, a step off to get on/off couch if needed etc. etc. Poor little lady - I hope she recovers soon! and copes well with further surgery.

I currently have pugs too! We have them as they too fit into our lifestyle well and my husband is a first time dog owner. Although they need to be shown who's boss, they are the loveliest, most gentle little companion! Ours make us laugh out loud at least once a day by their antics, and they're either ready for action if you are, or happy to be lazy with you if that's what you're doing! They are just so easy: exercising is easy, feeding is easy, training has been relatively easy (we don't have much for comparison!), and they're not the type that if you're sick and really don't feel like going for a walk, they don't mind and they're not stir crazy because of it! My other breed I love is a German Shepherd. My parents got one when I was three years old and he was the most beautiful dog I've ever met. Protective, loyal and extremely intelligent. I will have one, one day when I have a little more time.

dyson with the pet head. They are expensive but so worth it.

I have 2 pugs......that are starting to feel the cold.....but snuggle up together under flannelette sheets and blankets each night. They don't normally move until I wake them up in the morning, so after they're 'tucked in' at night: that's it. I am wondering if putting their coats on them is actually impeding on their ability to keep each other warm? And am totally confused whether or not to leave their coats on to sleep or not - any thoughts? It will get down to about 2-3 degrees here in the middle of winter (which more blankets then get added).
-
Hello fellow WA DOLers......... Might be a silly question: do you have any pugs in agiliity??
-
One of mine will eat tablets as long as I make a song and dance that she's getting a treat. She gets so worked up that she eats it no problems. The other one is not as good. We cover it in vegemite and she eats it then no worries. Needless to say: mine are pigs pugs
