  1. I have 2 females and they get along fine. Very occasionally ( like when one has been to the vet) they get a bit growly at each other and I watch them closely then. However this is very short-lived. The older one is the boss and she likes it that way so if the younger one gets more attention for some reason she is not happy. Saying that I had not had a problem and try to share the attention as equally as is possible. They are labradors and desexed.
  2. Hi, I have a six month old desexed lab pup and he plays very hard but not as hard as our older dogs. If I tied the older dogs up they would get jealous I think. I separate them reguarly for everyones sake. Our puppy has an area he goes to be alone and he loves the rest and sleeps the whole time. He is a very good dog at night and is used to this routine. I would recommend taking the pup away rather than isolating the older dogs. Our older dogs actually get tired of our puppy as he bites them and jumps all over them continuously when he is excited! He is learning some social skills now but i have noticed if i leave him with the older dogs too long he is very exhausted and this cant be good for joints etc. Good luck but I do advise a puppy pen or room or area for quiet times.
  3. I had 2 Border Collies when my daughter was born 20 years ago. They were both boistrous and needed a lot of exercsze. They were my babies and slept on our bed and went everywhere with us. After my daughter was born one of them didnt cope as well as the other. However over time I got a routine and they got used to different BABY rules! Eventually it worked out( with a few disasters and a bit of stress along the way). No... I didnt have the same time for them but they were still loved and still our family. All families change over time, they never stay the same and every member has to adjust. I think canine members adjust better than people sometimes! Its part of an ever evolving family, as long as they are loved and get some attention. Your children will grow to love your fur babies as my daughter did . In the end my daughter gave back so much to our dogs and she loved them too. So they actually got extra attention as the years sent by! They traveled around Australia with us, camped with us every Xmas and are in all our family photos. My daughter made Christmas presents for them when she was little. My lovely border collies have passed now, but they had wonderful happy loves with lots of adventure. They lived till 14 and 13 years old. Dont feel too guilty, you have to concentrate on your human babies now, but things will progress and your dogs will he happy to have children to love them in a few years time. The fact they have had that undivided attention before your children came along will make them all the more part of your family and they will adjust.
  4. This is a familiar sight! I dont know how many dog beds I have gone through, not to mention antique french lead light doors... They will never be the same again. Labs love to chew ANYTHING!
  5. From the look of the photos, Sidro may possibly be in Hawaii or some other country. Where pitbulls are legal and popular. Qld has many places as tropical as Hawaii including plants etc. This pic looks like Qld to me and I lived in Nth Qld for a very long time.
  6. This flood is shocking!!!. I wish I could help but I live in Northern NSW. I hate to think of how many animals have had to be abandoned and are suffering. I really wish I could foster some for desperate owners as I have room however Im too far away I think. Is there anything we can do?
  7. Is that available online? Sounds good. though if I dont use the advantix or advantage reguarly as directed on packet for fleas ( montly) and ticks ( fortnightly) it does nto work so well. Fleas have cycles and you have to break the egg and flea cycle with regular treatment then there are no more eggs to hatch and no more fleas. Cats are big flea carriers , so very impt to get the cat fleas under control, this helped me shen I was able to do this. If I use advantix as a one off it is not so good and must be used reguarly for fleas. It works for ticks very well though and this is my biggest worry due to where I live. The comfortis sounds good too pity it does not do ticks.
  8. I just read the part about your dog being inbred. That is so sad and I posted a comment on culling pups which I find shocking. However aborting the pups before the mother goes through labour is sounding like a good idea for this poor dog as the pups may or are likely to have some health probs due to inbreeding. Basic genetics tells us this is a huge warning sign regardless of the breed of the dogs involved.
  9. Desexing may be good in early stages but I dont know about "culling"puppies when they are born unless they have some terrible defects and a vet does it! This is cruel. If they are born then they are here and need attending to humanly and with care like any puppy regardless of breed or pedigree. I think this culling would be a terrible choice. I realise that the pups are unknown etc health wise but how many adopted dogs have long happy lives... a lot. If it has happened and is too late to desex then please care for these pups as anyone would with any litter and sell them to carefully selected homes for the price of the vaccinations, microchips and food. Its a lot of work but Im sure you will find great homes for these pups and have your girl desexed as soon as you can after she has had the puppies and they are weaned. I had an accidental breeding that I recieved some flack from on the forum and I do understood some of the reasoning for this, however there are some very very extreme comments on here from some people who are supposed to be animal lovers . If you care for animals and it sound like you do then dont cull at birth unless advised by a vet for medical reasons. Good luck with it all.
  10. Daddy is Roy. No action as yet but a restless night. I will keep you informed and try to ignore the sarcastic posts some people are making. Thanks for your support.
  11. and another BYB who in all likelyhood will not take a lifetime responsibility for the offspring of their pets. so any problems that the new owners may have with the puppies/dogs and they are more likely than not to wind up in the pound and therby further contributing to the problem. and to top it off, they are here asking for help to whelp this litter...i find that very hard to stomach. Enough ok? You assume a lot and you are not correct. I have obviously offended you, going by your posts and you are going to believe what you will. No matter what I say you are gong to critisize it and you dont have all the facts. I think you would be suirpised at just how responsible I am. There is no need for me to keep answereing your questions to just recieve negative assumptions. Sorry but Ihave tried to be honest and I have read the forum rules and really did not thik I had done anything wrong here. I will let other know the outcome of Pearls birth, but dont think you have much interest in that yourself or you would see that I have done everything to assist and you dont know my dog or her needs as I do. So please dont assume you do. I appreciate you are angry but i think I have been admonished enough for now and have Pearl to think about . I really have had some great input and some genuine carng people postand hope tp be able to let them know the outcome of the birth. I dont need your actual help tp whelp the litter. I have support and am very capable . Howeerv more knowlege is never a bad thing and is it so hard to give? I dont want to waste any more of your timeand I dont need the flack at the moment, as my pet is my priority.
  12. Just goes to show never assume anything on DOL - a few pages back on 1 or 2, I thought shall I ask if the OP is a registered breeder? but then thought nah must be there are all these DOL groupies probably someone knows the OP and the OP just doesn't know how to post on the breeder's forum ........... but anyway here we are and yes Jamieson you are welcome to post but you will find that unreg breeders are not encouraged and generally get less groupies not because they are inherently bad or care for their dogs less but because there is an unwritten DOL ethos that is about improving the standards of dog breeding and dog ownerhsip. As an unregisterd breeder, you counter that. HOWEVER there is no need to go screaming into the night An unregistered breeder can become a registered breeder and there are always direct ways of doing thigns as well as the long wayward way; Im not against the latter, I seem to be prone to it. What state are you in? If you enjoy learning about dog breeding, then I think you will find being a registered breeder and the knowledge circles this can impart - to be beneficial and of long standing interest. Thankyou for that information. I am in NSW. I take your point and understand what you are saying and thankyou for being constructive and positive with me. I am very responsible would like to know more. And you make a good point.
  13. Not to those who understand that oedema is simply the medical terminology for swelling (and swelling isn't necessarily painful). Umm, how? Unless your vet has as little experience as you seem to with whelping, then I doubt any vet would say this as all bitches have a swollen vulva at the end of pregnancy... just like all female mammals do. A swollen vulva has nothign to do with a dilated cervix. The only way to know if the cervix IS dilated is to do an internal... I know what odema is and he did not say all bitches have a swollen vulva at the end of pregnancy ( please read the post more carefully)! He said because of this it is easy to mistake dilation when doing an internal ( she has only had 1!) Im not sure where you are coming from now and you are clearly misreading my posts. Im sorry of I have offended you and feel that any more posts will me misread by you also. You really underestimate vets , perhaps you dont use them? maybe have a read of the forum rules before you post anything that has a personal dig at forum members as it is not allowed. I have not got personal and wont, however some here have. come on lets not get nasty. I am only concerned about my dog.
  14. Ok I seem to have started an uproar! Im sorry but I havent mislead anyone, if I intened to I would not have posted ansers to questions! I thought the furum was for purebred registred dog owners? Black Labrador ;you have a lot if strong opinions and that is fine but you are not correct here.'"overmanagment"" I dont think so. I have read many many posts and registered breeders are cautious and many would agree with my vet. Regardless Pearl is not stressed and if I was unsure about dates is it not better ot safe than sorry. I had advice on this forum that said exactly that! i would never have known when she was due it not for the ultrasounds and they were not invasive as Pearl likes ging to my vet clinic and knows them. Please stop critisizing me and I wont ask yoy to waste your time on this thread.
