Your guess is as good as mine; I only browsed the internet to find the average height of a female Newfoundland.

Thanks for the advice! I will try the Speak on Stanley tomorrow. Why he is barking... I really think he's bored (although I do play with him when I'm not busy, which is about 3 times a day including training. Plus he has a ton of toys, a clam shell to dig in and a HUGE backyard to run in.) Also the sound of other dogs has him barking too. He's fine with people speaking, though. I'm signing him up for obedience classes next month, so that will keep him busy (hopefully ) Going for a walk with him now.

Hi Can anyone explain to me how to teach my 4 month old pup how to speak/be quiet on command? Stanley has a deep, loud bark and is beginning to talk to the neighbourhood dogs. I don't want him to become a nuisance and want to nip this behaviour in the bud.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing with crate training! ;) Can he see you in his crate when you both go to bed? My advice is to take your puppy out to toilet when: Its been 10 minutes after a meal; After a playing session; Immediately after he wakes up from a nap; otherwise Every 2 hours. Also please don't think you're being a bad mum for leaving the pup alone in the crate. Think of it as 'time out' for both of you. As Rommi n Lewis has explained, make the crate a fun place to be for him. He'll get used to being alone which helps prevent separation anxiety.

Puppy With Suspected Parvo - Only Had Him 7 Days!
quickbrownfox replied to erikajayne's topic in Puppy Chat
Black and tan dogs are more vulnerable to parvo because of genetic heterogeneity (ie. lack of genetic diversity.) These dogs have inherited problems with the immune system. If you're good at understanding genetics, this is a good read. -
If you live near Belmore, Vebopet sells strong, collapsible wire crates for less than $100 (it is cheaper to buy on their website rather than on their eBay store.) Here is the 42" crate that should fit your puppy even when she's adult size. You can also order accessories like dividers and crate covers. Stanley has a 42" crate and I think it is fantastic. I adjust the divider as he grows. However the crate took a week to get here as I live in WA, but you should get it much more quicker in NSW. As for power points, I haven't had that problem with my puppy yet (he was taught right from the beginning not to touch cables) however, you can buy covers on eBay which are designed to protect children and babies. I will link to a couple that may interest you: 10 x Blank Plate Cover Light Switch Power Point GPO 2 x Child/Baby Safety Power Point Cover Good luck! ;)

Congratulations on graduating!!! It feels great when your puppy does something right My puppy has his last puppy class on Saturday, so I'm excited to see what he will do for his class.

My puppy, Stanley (now 16 weeks old) sleeps in his wire crate in my in-built wardrobe inside my bedroom. It is small and cozy for him, and he also can directly see my bed. I think this has helped him settle into his new home, as he has slept though the night since 9 weeks old.

Thanks mirawee! :D Will go check those clubs out. Ooooh how exciting Vader's Mum!!! If your pup is on a Qantas flight he will be taken to Australian Air Express terminal. I'm no good with directions, so I'll show you a map to give a better idea where to go: edit: I should clarify that this is the domestic airport, not international.

I think that's fine as long as it's only walking, not fast-paced walking (wait until he's one year old for running/cycling.) Maybe spend another half hour playing with him in the yard. Bull Arabs are active dogs.

Walking My Dog But Surrounding Dog Not On Leash
quickbrownfox replied to giraffez's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have no experience so I can't say, but this article suggests a few techniques. I'm going to quote a section relevant to the topic because I think it's worth reading: -
Hi all , can anyone recommend me a good obedience club SOR? Stanley is about to finish puppy class and I would like to register him in a beginners obedience class soon. Hopefully one that teaches skills that can be used in agility? Cheers

Walking My Dog But Surrounding Dog Not On Leash
quickbrownfox replied to giraffez's topic in General Dog Discussion
Someone from a similar thread a while ago suggested using an umbrella to shield both you and your dog to distract the rushing dog. My pup is almost ready for his first walk, so I'm bearing this idea in mind. If all else fails, a good boot to the jaw should suffice. -
I can vouch for this. My puppy became more independent when I started leaving the back door open during the day. It also helped with his toilet training too as he now goes to the toilet outside by himself.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have made an order for a tag & collar today. Basically my tag should read: "Dogs name" I am microchipped My mobile number Boyfriend's mobile number Beloved family pet I can't wait to receive it Stanley has almost outgrown his puppy collar!

Thank you When I was looking for a pup I first contacted breeders in WA, but none were not having litters for a while. Stanley came from VIC. This is the very reason why I started this thread and would like to know too. My council website (City of Cockburn) doesn't say much, but it complies with the Dog Act 1976. Rangers can do on-the-spot fines if your dog isn't registered.
-
Hi DOLers I'm about to register my puppy this week with the council and I've realised I haven't brought him a dog tag yet (he is microchipped though.) I'm thinking of getting one of these. What information should a dog tag include? Thanks

Martin Clunes: Life With Dogs
quickbrownfox replied to Brennan's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Will try to watch it as it looks interesting (also seeing Clunes elsewhere on tv makes me miss watching Doc Martin!) -
No problem chi4me. I'm really sorry to hear about your breeder's litter :D I hope you find your special little puppy soon. I'm not familiar with designer dog terminology, but I think a Moodle is a Maltese x Toy Poodle. Also thanks! Stanley has won many hearts over with his cuteness, but he can be a naughty puppy sometimes I had to buy a bigger carrier today for him because he's growing so quickly!

Does Your Dog/ Puppy Growl When Playing?
quickbrownfox replied to heroeswit's topic in General Dog Discussion
My puppy is 13 weeks and does the same. I think he's just being vocal. I love it when he makes cute little noises. Sometimes when he sees food, he makes 'gruffle gruffle' noises. Does anyone else have dogs that do this? -
OK I just came back from my first puppy class and I think it's great. When I walked in the instructor welcomed us and said to put Stanley on a lead. The class is very small (9 pups) and was very well controlled. Firstly we all sat in a circle and let the pups sniff each other while we introduced ourselves one by one. We then were allowed to let the pups play off leash while the instructor talked to us about nutrition, intestinal worming, heartworm, fleas and how to treat them. After that we were shown how to teach the puppies to sit and drop (which Stanley already knows) and provided us treats to try it out ourselves. Before the class ended we were given goodie bags and a folder full of additional information of the topics that were discussed in the class (and for future classes.) Also we had the option of weighing our puppies to receive free worming tablets (Canex brand I think.) The class definitely exceeded my expectations (I'm considering switching vets.) Stanley was a giant compared to the other pups (If I remember correctly, there was a Corgi, Doberman, Staffy, Toy Poodle, Apricot-coloured Poodle, Moodle, Papillion & 2 Maltese Terriers) but he was very friendly and was happy to play a bit rough with a couple other puppies. ;) Looking forward to next week's class!

I'm about to start puppy class at South St. Vet Clinic this Saturday. I will let you know how it goes.

My boy loves tug toys, squeaky toys and anything that can be easily destroyed, like cardboard boxes. I got my tug toy from Payton's Toy Box (they make customized dog toys and leads. smisch on DOL sometimes does a bulk order, the next one I think is in September if you're interested) There are numerous threads about puppy toys on here to search for. Here are just a few: link link link link
