There have been untold numbers of dogs in Bali for ages. From my experience, at least before the early 70s. And back then they were the only animals that weren't sacred. A dog was one thing people didn't want to come back as in reincarnation. Still, Indonesia claimed not to have rabies back then, and I never heard of anyone ever getting rabies shots either. I haven't been there for ages and don't know how much has changed. I found this about an animal vaccinating program from September: http://www.wspa.org.au/latestnews/2010/Bal...ate_rabies.aspx

Dogs And Tryptophan - Silly Rumour Or Not?
ruffpup replied to UltimatePup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
thanks for those extra details, UP. At this time of year I forget details too quickly to type them up and I'm wary of putting links or big pages of detailed info into a thread. The ban I remember was for supplements - I presume vitamin tablet style - and probably in a higher dose than for things like additives. fwiw, my pooches get turkey a lot and love it, close favourite after chicken in their varied diet. They're still healthy. Cheers -
Dogs And Tryptophan - Silly Rumour Or Not?
ruffpup replied to UltimatePup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Apparently the ban started in the US but other countries followed suit. My then dr advised me to get some back then, which I didn't straight away then it was suddenly not available, taken off the market (Australia-wide I was told). And yes, it's back now, I think has been for quite a while. Wikipedia doesn't mention dogs that I saw, just reading the screen quickly, but there's a chart on tryptophan content and turkey is about halfway down the food list, equal to chicken and just above beef. There wouldn't be much left if we avoided all on the list. I haven't seen anything yet about adverse effects on dogs, there's a lot on giving it to dogs though. edited - typos -
Dogs And Tryptophan - Silly Rumour Or Not?
ruffpup replied to UltimatePup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I remember it (supplements) was banned back in the 90s, and just now did a search and checked out the Wikipedia site, it mentions both that way-back ban, and also a belief that turkey is high in it, not so, Wiki reckons. Lengthy but interesting info (depending on how much one can believe anything on the net lol) eta clarification -
Pet Urine Odours In Carpets - How To Get Rid Of Them
ruffpup replied to bernym's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've had success with neat eucalyptus oil (from supermarkets, I use Bositos). You can use as much or as little as you like/need. Pour a bit on a cloth to scrub new patches, or pour a little bit to sink in the carpet, then scrub rather vigourously. It does kill pongs and stains, as it claims to. Also super good to add to the wash for their beds, towels, face cloths etc. -
thanks for the laughs all, some of the most recent posts are hilarious. On a bit more serious note though, can I just get back to the original topic? Quite a while back I had kids at the back - diagonally - with a trampoline and a big tree. And I had 2 little dogs. The kids would scream and yell their heads off whilst on the trampoline, then they'd climb the tree, a fair bit of which hung over my back yard corner. It's a huge tree (the roots spread into my yard and caused me over 3K's of plumbing problems, which the govt paid). Up in the tree the kids got a bird's eye view of my yard - and then the squeals started, calling their parents to come and see the little doggies! The dogs would go nuts, absolutely crazy. Right at the back of my place there was another little girl who quite often would try and climb over the fence to see my dogs. All this was going on at the same time - and after the plumbing episode I wasn't sure how to handle it. Then another little girl across the road (and the one at the back) took to dancing on my driveway to make the dogs bark. (they did love the dogs but thought it was fun). Then "across the road" started either dancing or staring at the front window from her front yard. All of this sent the dogs wild. I spoke to the girls and they stopped a bit. But then the novelty wore off - for both the kids and the dogs. Even jumping on the trampoline wasn't so interesting anymore, and when it was used, the dogs grew to care less. So did the kids. A lot of kids don't have long term interest in things. Long spiel - sorry - but it might happen for Sheridan too.

Sending Your Bitch To A Stud Equals Prostitution!
ruffpup replied to Paptacular!'s topic in General Dog Discussion
good grief! I was of the understanding that prositution was NOT illegal in all states of Oz. Maybe I'm wrong on that. And I don't think dogs would give a toss either way. They sniff groins and that isn't polite behaviour either. anyway, what's the alternative? Casual mating would equal a lot of floozy bitches and slack boys everywhere, wouldn't it? Maybe it's one way of controlling too many dogs around the place - no breeding at all? -
Yes and I'm sure you've got plenty of photos to prove it, just like I have. So what's the issue deep down - that it's not OK to take a street photo in Australia incase someone catches you but it is in another country? Serious question because I dont know the answer. No, raz, the only photos I have of people "in the street" are a very few where they were in the way of a building, and even that's not many as I'd run around trying to get the building without people in the scene. Sometimes I'd just leave it and not take the photo. With people photos I'd always get their permission. Thinking hard about this, in more recent times the people who overseas don't like their pics taken were in poorer countries and the idea of their face being on the internet horrified them. I don't have a lot of pics of strangers. For me too, the internet has added to my dislike of the idea - there are a couple of really weird men in my past life who I'd prefer never knew if I am still alive or dead, that they could see my mug somewhere would worry me greatly.

who's thinking they're important? the photographer with no manners or consideration of another's feelings? hmmmm I'd just view it as rude and an invasion of privacy, even if I am out in public. Always have done, and more so after extensive travelling overseas. In some cultures it's definitely not on.

In my past experience with brachies, with no airconditioning at home, I found that the inside of the closed-up house was much, much cooler than outside when I arrived home mid-late afternoon in the middle of heatwaves. The dogs were always fine, I suspect they slept a lot. During weekend days I found one also liked lying under a bush, cool and shady. At night I'd stress but then realised at least one dog worked out the bathroom tiles were cool and used to sleep there. To me, they do seem to work it out themselves.

I agree with a lot of the posts in here, and have been seen a bad case of non-socialisation from a puppy aged 12 weeks on arrival. The breeder sounded fantastic before the purchase (turned out to be a real cow afterwards). This poor little dog didn't seem to have been socialised at all, contrary to breeder's claims in conversations and website still saying so. He was and still is the most frightened little dog I and others have ever encountered. A behaviourist reckoned it's genetic with this guy and can't be changed. imo his behaviour is like a little school boy, those who are terrified and act tough to prove they're not. just from seeing this dog, I think he did miss out on the critical period. On the other hand, his companion is a girl who arrived at 15 weeks and she is marvellous, could run a doggy social club. Different breeder who didn't tell fibs about the personality etc. When I get around to purchasing a dog I'm going to be so super-wary.

It IS a law enforcement context, though. Comparing to any other hypothetical situation is like comparing the proverbial apples to oranges. Just reading this thread for the first time, IMO some of the posts sound awfully like those people who complain about speed cameras and similar. People who don't break the law rarely have a problem. If police arrive with a dog and tell someone to stay still, what kind of fool disobeys that? In some other countries the command is "stop or I'll shoot". They do, too. And no-one blames the gun. If I was on the receiving end of a DV incident, I'd want the police with dogs and anything else they deemed appropriate.

My view is it depends on the 65 year olds. I know people in their 30s, 40s and 50s who rarely ever get off their butts. Then vs people like my own parents, around his mid 60s my father had a dog - a really stubborn, alpha collie - which died and my father picked a different dog, kelpie something. They always had RSPCA or pound dogs and my father was big, fit, and ALWAYS the alpha - and their dogs always accepted that (people had to, too ) He died mid 70s and the newer dog had been no problem since they got him, a sook if anything. If your parents seriously want a dog, why not let them dog-sit a bit, overnight or a couple of days and see how it works out. They all might love it, but they might not, too. edited for clarity

Hi, as per the heading, it was mentioned a while back I should ask in here for recommendations on good breeders, do any Lhasa Apso owners recommend anyone in particular? And is there any way to pick a puppy that hopefully wouldn't end up terrified of just about everything on the planet (as is a friend's dog). Thanks in advance.

I've heard that Dog World was good, not northside I know. But my work mate got 2 dogs booked in quickly, and on a weekend which suited her better. Apparently even the fearful little puppy was no trouble to them. I've seen the dogs since and they look good. Some mobiles do clip but it seems they don't all clip well.

Yes - even purchasing a pure breed through a registered breeder can be disappointing when you're unlucky. But would you not be even more wary about buying either a purebred or a non-purebred dog through an unregistered breeder? Hi Erny, yes indeed, I wouldn't buy a purebred from an unregistered breeder. As for buying a mutt/heinz/whatever, I guess I'd have to expect the unexpected. imo, the worst thing with this little dog I wrote about before is not just his problems, and he has a few, but the attitude of the breeder verbally attacking a buyer. I don't know what I'd do if that happened to me.

When anyone works out a fool-proof way to find an ethical, good breeder please let me know. I've been thinking of getting a Lhasa Apso for ages now. A work colleague bought one last year (from a breeder who advertises on DOL) and it hasn't turned out well at all. It's the most frightened little dog both the owner and I have known. There were also a few minor health queries and when the owner mentioned them to the breeder, the breeder went on the attack - including abusive email and a major blast on the breeder's own website about how there is nothing wrong with this puppy and everything is the new owner's and vet's fault. (I saw those on the internet myself). My colleague never contacted the breeder again and the dog's problems haven't improved. He has a really unattractive temperament, and gets quite aggro - now a year old. And not a particularly good looking dog at that, most people think he looks weird. Well, after seeing all this happen to someone else I'm now really wary about buying a pure-bred, maybe more so in case I picked a loony, nasty breeder.
