Secret Stash Secret Locket Secrets Out

The important thing is how the dogs behave when they are being adopted out. There is no compulsion for rescuers to assess in any particular location as long as they do it before placing that dog in somebody else's home. It's up to the rescue at what stage they decide whether a dog is or isn't suitable to be rehomed or even placed with a carer, and with Pound Rounds there is no stage they make that decision. But plenty of people use foster care networks - effectively, the dogs are 'placed in somebody's home' to be assessed. Though I agree with you (that assessment of animals should happen before they're permanently placed in a 'forever' home), assessment will pretty much have to take place in a home environment to truly evaluate behaviour. I know what you're saying, but making practical legislation regarding this is difficult.

I haven't been involved with Pound Rounds, but I do think they are a problematic group. The major issue is placing dogs that often have 'issues' into unskilled and unknowledgeable and unprepared foster homes with little support, to rehome them to unskilled and unknowledgable and unprepared 'forever' homes. However, I don't think limiting rescue pulls from shelters is the best method. I'm biased, of course, but I've fostered and rehomed (privately or through other groups) about 25 dogs over 5 years, and I'd say that one, maybe two, would've passed RSPCA SA's temperament assessment. Despite this, all the dogs (which have included food aggressive dogs, fear aggressive dogs, dog reactive dogs, and fence jumpers) have stayed in their adoptive homes bar one. They are sold with full disclosure of any issues, and given strategies to deal with the issues, and even given free follow up behaviourist consults if necessary. But almost all of them would've been killed as a result of a temperament test in a shelter. What I'm saying is, yes, PR's methods are not desirable. But if shelters did start to 'screen' rescues and rehoming, a great number of dogs that ARE suitable for adoption would be destroyed based on their behaviours in a kennel facility. I don't know what the solution is, but I would hate to see genuine, ethical rescues compromised, and rehomeable dogs killed, because of the actions of a solitary group.

Hi Gertrude, Thanks for looking and your feedback. http://www.leemakennels.com/border'>http://www.leemakennels.com/border and http://leemakennels.com/border go to the same page (the 'new look'). I currently have http://leemakennels.com/borders (with an 's'!) as the 'one people are supposed to visit'. I'm planning to make them both go to the same place, soon, once I've put the finishing touchers on border (without an s). Hope that makes sense? It's a bucketload easier if you make your index the page people are meant to visit - ie: http://www.leemakennels.com/ edit: and for older browsers, http://leemakennels.com/borders isn't centered so it seems your coding might be a bit wonky? Good that /borders (with a s) is going bye-byes then! :D Leemakennels.com leads to an index for my blog, rescue, and breeder website. They're all equally important to me, and I couldn't single one out to be the first page people look at.

If it's not on PetAddress, the chip is probably not registered.

I get lots of comments about my website when people call me. They generally say things like, "I like the way you talk about your dogs", "I like your attitude to rescue", and, my favourite, "You actually seem to like your dogs." From this, I'd say, having a personable approach is important. I have appreciated this thread and I look forward to making some of the changes suggested on my new breeder page. I thought it was finished, but now I have so much more to do! If anyone wants to provide additional feedback, I'd be most grateful: http://leemakennels.com/border I am going to make a 'my dogs' page, as described, with photos instead of names as links. I am also going to try to slot in my contact details on the front page.

I went to his seminar at the beginning of 2012. I enjoyed it. My notes are on my blog: http://leemakennels.com/blog/aboutblog/the-dunbar-index/ I'm not going again, because I did get sick of listening to him for 3 days straight. But I am very glad I went.

" Top 5 Breeds" In Sa Story On 7 News Tonight

Yes, and I think that crossbreeds counted in the tally of the 'most popular'. -
Thanks for your insight, jr. We are in a residential property, a normal suburban block. I know quite a few people in Onk who have 3 dogs, and haven't had any problems getting number 3 permitted. I don't know anyone that has 4 (on a residential block) though.

Just a heads-up that there's a dog story on 7 News tonight, at "approximately 6:12pm". They are reporting on the most popular 5 breeds in the state: The Maltese (and crosses), Kelpies (and crosses), Labradors (and crosses), Jack Russels (and crosses), and Staffordshire Bull Terriers (and crosses). Part of the story will talk about how any of these breeds are available in rescue.

Airedaler - I don't have any fence issues I will see if I can get neighbours on side. I don't really have much to do with any of them.

Last week I sent an application to council to request permission to house a fourth dog. Today a council ranger attended my premises, and I spoke to her on the phone this afternoon, and she verbally indicated that I would not be receiving permission. I will receive a letter at a later date. Apparently my property is 'too small' and I am also being refused on the basis of 'proximity to neighbours'. The ranger said that there has been no complaints from neighbours that have been lodged by council, but they want to 'prevent future complaints'. She also noted that there was no visible faeces (another thing that neighbours could complain about). I am really pissed, to say the least. Once I receive their letter regarding their decision, I can then appeal to their 'team leader'. I would love to hear if anyone has had any success with working with councils on dog permissions. I am in Onkaparinga City Council, in South Australia.

My 11 year old border terrier (8kgs) had his teeth scaled and cleaned, and two extractions, earlier this week. It cost $390ish and included fluids (but not bloods).

I don't treat for heartworm as I live in a low-risk area. I worm my dogs on a irregular basis, but I tend to worm everyone when I get a new foster dog. I also worm puppies regularly, when I have them.

I just wanted to bump this because I am genuinely interested in what people are submitting to this committee! :)

Thanks so much for linking this, Zug Zug. Bob Such put a bill to parliament basically aiming to eliminate 'puppy farms', but it lacked substance. The Select Committee was formed in response to this bill, to make something with more oomph.
