Why Is Jackson Still Waiting?
Leema replied to ruthless's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I've been watching Jackson, Ruth, and I don't know why he hasn't found a new home yet, either. Your photos, as always, are stunning. Have you tried running an ad in the paper or promoting one of his posts on Facebook? Is he listed on Gumtree? -
I'd say if your puppy looks fine now at 13 weeks then he's probably going to have a normal life. :) I've worked on quite a few newborn pups, but one of them I had to work very hard on and he ended up having brain damage that affected his balance. I don't know if he was always going to be that way, or if his time in limbo affected his development. Regardless, he was a normal dog in other ways (he just fell over a lot) and went to a home who was happy to have him and his disability. He was a very confident little pup and really didn't know the world was supposed to be steadier than he was experiencing.

I agree with Sandra, too. If you're getting a puppy, I would get the opposite sex because you're almost guaranteed that the dogs will get along. However, if you're thinking of getting an older dog, I'd be more willing to try adult same-sex dogs on a case-by-case basis. With an adult dog, you know what you're getting. When you get a puppy, you're speculating on what you're going to get.

Hehehe, that's my blog! Nothing gets me over the novelty of people linking my articles! Angeluca, I had trouble understanding what you are asking for, but I have replied on my blog. That being said, I can very much do an article like 'what to look for when buying a new puppy/dog' or something to that affect. Considering I'm an Dogs SA registered breeder, it may be clear what direction I will be suggesting people engage in...

Risks Of Un-descended Testicles/de-sexing
Leema replied to Justrace's topic in General Dog Discussion
You need to remove that undescended testicle, as it can become cancerous from being inside (it's warmer in there, and testicles don't like it). But you could probably wait until the dog is 12-18 months old and not have the testicle go cancerous. If you have a secure yard, you don't have to worry about your dog getting out, regardless of what your next door neighbour is doing or otherwise. -
Have you tried crating her?

Risk from puppy preschool is far outweighed by the benefits. http://www.dogstardaily.com/blogs/dr-ian-dunbar/puppy-classes-and-canine-parvovirus Life is just about weighing up pros and cons and making what you think is the best decision.

Another Joint Supplement: Rose-hip Vital Canine
Leema replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have heard people with very positive reports on green-lipped mussels. :) -
So how old are they when they begin to race? 2 years? Regardless, the registered vs litters has pretty much stayed the same over the last 10 years (the data presented). 4 is the average in my breed, and we have little dogs! It seems strange for such a big breed to have an average litter size of only 4. Most of my online reading suggests 6-8 is more average, but it's how to know, eh?

Thank-you! Just looking at their website with stats ( http://www.galtd.org.au/GreyhoundsAustralasia/index.php?q=node/111 ), with the numbers of greyhounds registered (12280) seems very smal compared to the number of litters (3023). That puts the average litter size as 4. Do greyhounds really have such small litters, or is there just no requirement of pups all being registered?

I'm just wondering who handles greyhound registrations nationally? And if they produce statistics on the number registered? Can't seem to find it myself online.

Another Joint Supplement: Rose-hip Vital Canine
Leema replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My border terrier, Mac, improved heaps after RHVC - like, in just 10 days. In a few days he was jumping on the couch and bed again, a few days later he stopped 'groaning', and within 10 days, he started running around like an idiot. :) I posted a full report on my blog: http://leemakennels.com/blog/dog-biology/dog-health/product-review-rose-hip-vital-canine/ -
I think his registration number will stay the same, Cassie. :)

I have clear favourites! It's got to the point that Clover's nickname is "Favourite"...

You're welcome to use the one on my latest blog post: http://leemakennels.com/blog/links-of-interest/the-week-in-tweets-22nd-may-2013/ But it's not the greatest photo.

For 3 dogs, they came and looked at the property to grant me permission for those particular 3 dogs. If I change dogs, I have to get the permission changed for those particular 3 dogs. That is, I don't have a permit for 3 - I have permission to have X, Y, and Z. Now I am in the process of getting permission to get a 4th dog and I still don't have a definite response despite putting in my application in November. So annoying.

So sorry to hear that Dexter and you are having such a hard time. I hope he is back to himself soon.

My puppies get most of their meals during training sessions - so whatever I'd normally feed them.

All maternal antibodies wear off in all puppies by about 16 weeks. There needs to be at least one vaccination after 16 weeks to ensure that the vaccination was effective. The vaccinations that your puppy has already had at 8 and 12 weeks may have worked, or they may not have. You can do a titre test to find out, but another vaccination will be cheaper.

What software does everyone use to edit their songs? :) -
Thank-you for all the comments so far. :)

How do you respond to those who argue that dogs who are cross bred are genetically superior due to hybrid vigour? The more detail the better. :)

My name is Tegan, and one of my favourite names is Keegan, but I have long written it off to be used by me, because I'd feel pretentious using it. "I love my name so much I'm going to change one letter and use that to name a dog."
-
There's no doubt that everyone teaches heel differently, and often with a combination of methods. I was just wondering what way you like best? I like to use the method that is often called the 'perch method' or Silvia Trkman's method, where a dog is taught to spin in the spot first, with feet on a centre target (a 'perch'). Basically, you're teaching a flip finish first, and then from there asking for the dog to follow you. Here's a series of videos: So what method do you like most? Or the one you find you use the most? Or the one you find is the most useful?

Call For Participants: Canine Temperament Testing

Could you please elaborate?
