Grooming Advice Wire Haired Dog
Leema replied to pearlandmooks's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
pearlandmooks - Most terriers don't like bums being stripped anyway, so may be best to just scissor him there. I have be known to, on a messy rear end, don gloves and just strip as normal. Not so appreciated but I do try hard not to cut coat! Some terriers also have hard and soft bits of coat... So heads, chest, belly, rear end are sometimes too soft to be stripped anyway (especially on mongrels) - at least in my experience. :D Looking forward to more pictures, anyway! -
Grooming Advice Wire Haired Dog
Leema replied to pearlandmooks's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I posted in the other thread so I'm just going to post it here, too. From the look of his photo, pearlandmooks, Hector has a coat that can be hand stripped. Being a terrier fan, I can't stand to ee them clipped! The basic process is to grab the hard outer coat and pull it out. Dogs with proper coat (nice and hard, like a 'straw door mat' ) don't normally object as it is the dead coat that you'll be pulling out. Here's some info on stripping: http://www.harborside.com/~laurelt/handstrip.htm http://www.norfolkterrierclub.co.uk/coatcare.htm http://groomblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/hand...et-terrier.html Some of these links show stripping knives, which I don't like, but would be better than getting him clipped! This is my foster that looked like him... Before stripping: After (some) stripping: Hope that's useful. -
It's never too young to start training. Like these 6wk old sheltie babies:

When Mac used to frequently chicken mince (blargh! how I've learnt...) he would get about 110g a night. Mac was about 10kg and was needing to loose weight... He never really lost weight on that amount.

I can't because of uni related stuff. To either. Such a shame.

If you're happy with it, it's not a problem. I'd have a few mornings a week when I put her back in her crate instead of on the bed, just so she doesn't come to expect being on the bed. But no problems with her sleeping on the bed sometimes.

What Do You Feed Your Dogs
Leema replied to encouraging_angels's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I feed raw, approximating 80% meat, 10% bone, 10% offal. -
Do You Consider Obedience "work"?
Leema replied to Just Midol's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
No. But I do consider obedience and dog sports a form of work (brainwork). Perhaps there is some discrepancies with the term 'working group'. Perhaps pastoral group would not make things so difficult? -
Good to hear, SD. Will see you there!

Hey Sarah, The club will probably run an 'introduction to quarry' class that would be suitable for Cruise to enter. It's just as is described! Great for you to get a feel for it and start to understand what it is about and give Cruise a go. Basically, Cruise will be expected to go through a tunnel, turn a corner, and work quarry (dig, bark, bite at) to pass. Anything you do to get Cruise used to tunnels (cardboard boxes are good) would be useful, and anything you do to get him used to quarry (e.g. hairy rabbit carcasses) is good, too. Getting Cruise to work through a barrier for quarry would then be the next step. Sorry this is a bit rushed. Are you going over for 6th/7th/8th of June? If so I will see you there. I may be entering earthdog on the Monday, too, but haven't decided yet.

Prefix Search Australia Wide Www.prefixsearch.com.au
Leema replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
My prefix of "Leema" was approved. Breed will be border terriers, eventually. -
Grapes are poisonous. I would guess sultanas are too but am guessing.

SP, I'd say just running Caber on concrete would thicken them up. Regardless, in our training, Clover's haven't gotten sore at all and we're mostly on concrete as we go. The worst incident was when I clipped her nails the night before, and we had a massacre on our run home!

We've been training! I do want to jog it as it's partly for my fitness. At the moment we're jogging about 3k, 3 times a week but it's more my fitness stopping us than Clover, of course! Not sure when we'll get to 20k but I am looking forward to it.

At a seminar I went to, there was a suggestion that some dogs are not able to handle raw meats. Apparently, the peristalsis in these dogs does not move food along as far as 'normal dogs'. Because of the slow peristalsis, the bacteria in the raw meat has a greater chance of actually affecting the dog. In this seminar, the recommendation was that dogs that have bouts of diarrhoea after being fed raw meats be put on a semi-cooked diet instead. Not saying this is the case with your dog, and I would attempt a type of elimination diet to ascertain whether it an intolerant to a certain type of meat or meat in general.

I voted other - I'm not adverse to going to 'dog parks', but don't think I've been for a year or two. I only socialise my pups with dogs I know intimately and am sure can provide good experiences for my pup. I literally drove all over Adelaide to get Clover used to dogs I -know-, instead of random unpredictable dogs.

Titre Testing South Australia

I don't know personally, but perhaps Glen Osmond: http://www.glenosmondvet.com.au/ -
Ravyk, her coat looks like it perhaps could be stripped in places... When I eventually meet you, I can give it a feel and let you know. A coat king might work well enough, but her coat looks thin in places, anyway. I doubt she'll feel better in the heat with less hair. Her belly looks quite thin in coat, anyway.

A puppy can learn stays fine, but I would be worried about puppies offering stays as a default behaviour or it not being on stimulus control for the rest of its life. For that reason, I chose to teach stay later. These problems can happen at any age, but I think behaviours taught as puppies are more likely to become default behaviours.

I feed on the bone and mince. Mince is easier to divide up for little dogs to stop excessive weight gain. Also, if it's out really cheap, then I can't help myself, especially when it's -just- mince and not preservatives etc.

Thank-you for all the suggestions. They have all been passed on and hopefully things will work well. My friend is going to try home cooking foods for him based on suggestions here.

What Training Expectations Should I Have For A 4mth Old Puppy?
Leema replied to FB Rescue_Adoption's topic in Puppy Chat
Have you taught your pup to walk nicely on lead? Have you taught him that four feet or sitting brings him food, not bouncing to get it? He needs to learn what you want him to do. At four months old, yes, he can learn. Here is a link for teaching loose leash walking: http://www.dragonflyllama.com/%20DOGS/Leve.../TL15Leash.html Here is a link for teaching zen (e.g. leaving food means you get food): http://www.dragonflyllama.com/%20DOGS/Leve...rs/TL26Zen.html Hope that is helpful. -
Thanks for the suggestions. I have passed them on to my friend.
