  1. Chunkers does smell kind of weird.. almost gassy? I think it's the egg/parsley in it! If it were one of my dogs, I wouldn't be too worried.. dogs digestive systems are designed to deal with all sorts of nasty things. The worst she'll do is vomit it up or maybe have a bit of diarrhea if the chunkers were really badly off? I wouldn't even expect that though.. I'm sure she'll be fine .
  2. I think it depends on the dog, really.. personally I wouldn't be TOO worried about a dog that size eating only a small amount of chocolate! Sure, it's not very good.. but I seriously doubt it will do your boy any real harm.. might make him feel a bit ick though ! My cattle dog mix who weighs 25-ish kilos got to a whole bag of easter eggs one year and devoured the lot.. I nearly had heart failure because I was sure she was going to die.. but 8 years later she's still fine.
  3. I would think so? But I wonder if being at a dog park would affect this.. I wonder if because you knowingly took your dog to a place where you knew it was possible to come across other dogs offload if you would end up being the one at fault, even if your dog was on a lead at the park.
  4. Like I said, my post was just my opinion. I completely expect people to disagree with me but I dont think an offlead park is a suitable place to exercise an aggressive dog. I dont really like using dog parks at all really, the last time I went to one my parents dog was attacked by another dog and required long term veterinary care.. this experience has also probably helped to form my opinion because that dog was known to be dog aggressive and at the time I was disgusted that it was at an offlead park. Maybe my dog is more DA than some of the other dogs being spoken about here? Basically I wouldn't feel comfortable with taking her anywhere where I know there will be offlead dogs where I couldn't control the situation.. I suppose there's also a legal aspect to it, too.. I imagine that if your dog aggressive dog attacked another dog at a dog park and killed/hurt it you would be fully liable and the courts would go to hell on you for taking a dog that was known to be aggressive to place where you knew there would be offlead dogs. I love my dog too much to risk her life over something like that so we'll stick to exercising on lead and at private properties.. at least if she was to somehow attack another dog in either of these circumstances it would the fault of the other owner for not containing/restraining their dog effectively. Dog Aggressive dogs are entitled to exercise too!
  5. No, I dont think Dog Aggressive dogs should be taken to offlead parks AT ALL. This is just my opinion and I'm totally understanding of the fact that people who have dog aggressive dogs still want to let their dogs run.. but at an offlead dog park? Where you KNOW that it's highly likely you'll run into other dogs that are offlead? I think it's a pretty irresponsible thing to do, personally. There are other means and ways to exercise a dog offlead, it doesn't have to be at a dog park. I have a dog aggressive dog and I would NEVER take her to an offlead dog park at any time under any circumstances.. she still gets to go for a run but we take her to a friends private property where we know there will not be other dogs around.
  6. I have an elderly cattle dog x bully breed mix who is badly in need of a bath. Generally I do this myself with no problems but now that I'm pregnant I cant really lift her into the bath properly and my boyfriend wont do it because she stiffens up and makes it really difficult and he's terrified he'd drop her or hurt her somehow. He's tried a few times with me trying to help him but she's just a brat who wont let anyone besides me manhandle her! I feel that it's way too cold to bathe her outdoors and we tried to get her to go in the shower but she just outright wouldn't go and looked more terrified than I've ever seen her look and was giving lots of warning signals so I decided not too push her because never in all her life has she snapped at someone and I didn't want to make her do it over something silly as a bath! By any chance, is there a groomer in Adelaide that would allow me to stay with her while they groomed her? I know that most groomers dont allow this for a few reasons but there's no way in hell I'd leave her alone in an unfamiliar place with people she doesn't know after what happened the last few times we've attempted to do this. She's good natured really but is very wary, especially of men (due to severe abuse in her younger years) and I'd rather not stress her by leaving her with people she doesn't know.. I know for sure that if I was there with her she'd be 100% fine and I'd be more than happy for the groomer to muzzle her if they felt it neccesary. I know it seems silly and most people will leave their dogs with groomers with no problems but it's just not something I'm willing to do so dont bother suggesting it. I seriously doubt there is a groomer in Adelaide that would let me stay with her but I figure if there is someone here will know about it Lol! Alternatively, does anyone know if those coin operated dog washes still exist around Adelaide? I haven't lived in the city for a while now but dont remember seeing them last time I was down. Also, do they have a door at the side that we could walk her into rather than picking her up? As discussed earlier, she's a pain in the bum and picking her up just isn't an option! I think I remember some vets having pay to use hydrobaths a few years back too?? I know the clinic I worked at was planning to do that but never got around to it apparently lol Basically she smells awful and being that she's 100% an indoor dog I'm getting a bit sick of it Lol! Here is a pic of the smelly old lady hehe:
  7. I met an Anatolian shepherd X a central Asian shepherd at the park the other day! I know it's a cross breed but I was still pretty shocked to see it.. it was a really nice dog too absolutely HUGE and kind of bear-ish in appearance lol. I work in a supermarket and there's a lady I chat too sometimes about her dogs and she has a dog that has a really strange name and is apparently one of 8 in all of Australia from memory! I remember her describing it as looking a bit like a small basset hound and it has a ton of food allergies.. does anyone know what sort of dog this is by any chance?
  8. God no.. babies and puppies are not much alike as far as I'm concerned! I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant and sadly all of the puppies I've raised haven't made me feel very prepared.. wish they did! Lol
  9. My elderly dogs chip is now almost at her elbow.. it's migrated ALOT! I had no idea how much they could move until I went looking for it one day and was at how far down her shoulder it had moved
  10. Ohh my apologies, I misread your post and thought you already had him in belly bands! In my limited experience (just with my own dog!) I've found that Boomer doesn't actually try to pee on anything when he's wearing his now. He did once or twice but then seemed to acknowledge that his wee could no longer go anywhere and stopped.. so I'd reccomend a pad for the first few wearings and then see how you go, just the feeling of something constricting his willy a bit might be enough to make him stop .
  11. Our italian greyhound pup does this.. we haven't had much stopping it but are still persevering! I suggest going right back to basics.. treat the dog as if it's a 12 week old pup and being toilet trained over again. So never leave it unsupervised, restrict it to a certain part of the house, take it outside every hour or so when able and praise exuberantly for toileting in the right spot.. not sure what you do with the dog while you're out but we crate trained ours and he has never once had an accident in his crate! Belly bands are a godsend aren't they.. we dont take boomer to anyones house without one on Lol! Do you find that your dog still lifts his leg even with one on? Boomer did it once or twice but then seem to realize that, that just meant his belly got wet and hasn't done it again.. but if you take it off and don't keep your eye on him he'll be lifting his leg on whatevers closest! :/
  12. What can they do about it, really? Unfortunately what the petshop is doing isn't illegal. Sure you could make complaints and sign a few petitions.. but at the end of the day, until the people at the top realize this is a major problem there is nothing to stop petshops acting in this way. Voice their opinions to the people who are linked to the 'people at the top'. There is power in numbers. If every time a DOLer made a personal comment or complaint, sent a letter to the management, made a phone call to the boss of a company or organisation...that eventual tap-tap-tapping away would make a hairline fracture, that could eventual break. Whinging, moaning and complaining here only serves to make us feel better (and I know because I've done it before here as well!) where as action gives satisfaction. Companies are simply providing for what the customer wants...how are they to know that the customer is slowly becoming more aware of issues and ethics with this sort of behaviour if no one stands up to let them know? Well of course, your points are very valid.. but what's to say these people haven't done these things already? I've been sending letters and talking to people about it for years.. it's sad that things still remain the same (although.. I think we're SLOWLY moving in the right direction?). I have no doubt the eventual 'tap-tap-tapping' will do the trick eventually but I also dont think there's anything wrong with whinging, moaning and complaining about the sale of live animals, especially puppies on a forum such as this.
  13. So...what did you guys do about it? Apart from venting online...? What can they do about it, really? Unfortunately what the petshop is doing isn't illegal. Sure you could make complaints and sign a few petitions.. but at the end of the day, until the people at the top realize this is a major problem there is nothing to stop petshops acting in this way.
  14. Ebay. Our male pup is a bit of a spray marker so we have pants and 'belly bands' for him all bought from ebay
  15. .. Personally I dont think it's normal behavior? I'd be horrified if either of my dogs growled at me over something as simple as being moved! Has she been to a vet lately? This doesn't really explain the first incident but maybe she has some sort of sprain and being moved as your OH did to put her in the car and you when you were cuddling her hurt her a bit? Perhaps seek the advice of a behaviorist or trainer.. this is the sort of behavior that seems to escalate if not dealt with properly.
  16. Hi Chantelle! I'm running the rat display at the Gawler show. Strongly encourage anyone who wants to have a stand to get involved - awesome opportunity for advertisement and lots of fun.. we're very excited about our display :D.
  17. There are plenty of animal jobs in Adelaide. They are just picky with who they hire.. and rightfully so! There are so many people wanting to get in to the industry they can afford to be. I've found that studies definitely helped me get a number of animal jobs but your experience in a grooming and training is definitely going to do you favours! What sort of work did you have in mind? If I were you I'd just pop my resume into a few places.. often vet clinics, kennels, etc dont advertise because they have such a huge back log of people wanting to work there anyway but if your resume has got what they want.. you WILL get a call!
  18. Currently no, because imports are UKC registered. If they were imported from Europe and FCI registered, then there would be possibility of breed recognition. In the interim you can alway show a rough coat Anatolian! :D So beautiful!
  19. Wow! Henna is so pretty.. she looks like she's had tiger stripes painted on, gorgeous ;).
  20. Yeah I agree that putting a pup with a shape like a frenchy on it's back probably would be a bit distressing for it! But having only ever seen adult frenchies I'm wowed by how adorable that pup is.. you've got me on youtube looking for nicer vids of frenchie pups running around . They remind me a lot of Stitch from Lilo and stitch.. terribly adorable !
  21. Ewww.. that sucks. I caught a man allowing a dog to poop on our front lawn, pretty much on a rose bush once and rushed outside and gave him a serve! He didn't even have anything to pick it up with so I gave him a tiny plastic bag and he had to pick up a very large poop with that and then walk home with it! Serves him right.. How do you know it wasn't a stray dog though?
  22. At 2.24 the dog was lame. Make up your mind. I'm thinking it was a sarcastic joke??
  23. My elderly dog has grabbed toys instead of my hand many times.. I never really thought there was any malicious intent behind it, it just seemed that she'd accidentally overshot her grab while we were playing! She's always been quick to rush over when she's got my hand and I jump back swearing... so going by what you've described I think Cody just made a mistake! I think you did the right thing in the situation (stopped playing straight away) as this behaviour is definitely best not encouraged, even if it is accidental.
  24. Sorry but i would disagree with this, (in SA at least) i have done the cert 4 course full time and the practical support offered through tafe is terrible, altough i am working in the industry with a fantastic employer i would advise you to do a cert two to get a foot in the door and then speak to your employer about going through animal industries in Qld. If i had know the trouble i would have with tafe beforehand i wouldn't have wasted my time or money! Really? What sort of trouble did you have and what year did you study in? I was apart of the very first full time group in 2006 (or was it 07?! I'm having the hardest time remembering right now LOL) and had no problems at all.. I loved it and wish I could do it again! Admittedly it is very hard and you have to take alot of the studying into your own hands.. but yeah, no complaints here.
