Have You Ever Opt For Your Second Choice Breed First?
Fleuri replied to Fleuri's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi Gayle, I am very tempted to do a big re-think or maybe even go without a dog until I can get the one I want even if it takes a few years more. I will start looking into one other breed and see how it goes, thank you. -

Have You Ever Opt For Your Second Choice Breed First?

Thank you so much for your response. I have been reading your comments since I posted this and now that I’ve been thinking more about how suitable this breed is I’ve come to the very disappointing conclusion that we will have to go without this beautiful breed, as much as I have been utterly impressed and honoured to meet these wonderful people. I guess that’s where that little bit of doubt came from and me asking this question in the first place. Kids are disappointed but I told them we can attend the breed social days so they can enjoy and still have contact with the dogs. After speaking to the breeder this evening about our decision they suggested that if we call them beforehand to let them know we are coming to the social day, they can bring some extra dogs for the children to care for during the event. That’s so nice of them! I feel so blessed to have met such lovely and thoughtful people. Though still disappointed the children are now looking forward to the social day… and so am I. Thank you again for your comments I really appreciate all that has been said. I am disappointed too but it's the best choice for the dog and our family. -
My husband, myself and the children went to visit with a breeder to see their dogs and have a chat….OM!!! I almost want to get a pup from them because I loved everything about them more than the breed itself. (I’m sold on them more than on the breed) don’t get me wrong I love the breed too I just love another breed more. With the other breed I have in mind, I haven’t been able to find a breeder that I like yet. Do I get this breed now and wait to find a great breeder of the other breed that I really wanted first? I just feel that I don’t want to let go of these people I haven’t come across anyone like them, so wanting to impart knowledge, so down to earth, not judgemental yet very responsible and straightforward about their breed’s good and bad points. This husband and wife team are very active in their breed club and very active in showing their dogs, they even invited us to refreshments. It felt like they really wanted to know us also. Such lovely, lovely people, their dogs were so beautiful too and the children loved the dogs as you can imagine and everyone got on so well. Have you ever opted for your second choice breed first?

nightgrace6- I'd just ignore them or tell them you've done nothing cruel.

Hi, I am an owner of a docked breed. I got my dog 9 years ago already docked. Everytime I see the same breed with a tail they just don't look as appealing to me. I guess I just got use to seeing mine without a tail. I like the appearance and thats the truth. My husband on the other hand doesn't mind the tail look he says theres is no difference. edited to add that no one so far has said they thought is was crule. I did have a discussion with one of my children who asked why Mambo doesn't have a tail?

This is my opinion, please take into consideration that I’m not a breeder and don’t have a clue how much it costs you for health tests and for keeping your dogs in excellent condition and happy. So if it’s not going to break the bank or if you’re not at a loss by selling to pet homes a little under the going rate, then I don’t see the problem. I assume you sell your show dogs at the same price as you would those that go to pet homes. (Some breeders do) I have noticed that some other breeders sell main register dogs for up to $500 or more compared to the dog going to a pet home. As a non-breeder or show person I assumed they did this because they then want to make a little more seeing that you may breed from the dog and use their lines. As a child my dad got me a Rough Collie in 1983 for $100 with paper (main) from a register breeder …..I don’t know what the going rate for a Rough Collie may be these days. The papers didn’t mean much to us only that he was a pure bred dog…and a point to boast to my friends … that my dog had Champion parents ,grandparents and great grandparents. Our dog was never use for breeding or showing. I think $100 was too cheap even for those days. We loved our Duke dearly

She obviously didn’t know much about the breed before bought this pup. How sad is that!! Today I saw a sign outside a pet store saying something along the lines of ….. If your best friend has had puppies, we buy puppies and find good homes for them. The mini poodles had been reduced (Sign showing the before price and new price) obviously getting much bigger and harder to sell. Japanese spitz were priced at $1400. Buying from a breeder, yes! thats fine but from a pet shop!

Why Do Dogs Go Crazy After Having A Bath?

I'm confused as to what purpose the card has with regard to identifying the owner. The microchip holds the owners detaisl, the Vet only needs to scan the dog to see if the person presenting themselves as the owner is the same as the owner recorded on the computer.Another query. What happens when the Vet scans the dog and the details do not match? I like the idea of a card that holds medical records for the dog though, but not on the grounds of identifying ownership. With the way we are so mobile these days, having your dog's medical records in format like this would be brilliant. Hello, As far as I know when a dog gets scanned only the Microchip number appears and it's only if the vet looks up that number on a register of some kind (may be time consuming) will they see the owners details like address and name, phone numbers. I think a card may be a faster and an extra assurance that dog and owner match. There isn't yet any requirement for them to scan, but many do anyway. When they do scan the screen shows the owner's details to my knowledge (in NSW at any rate). Previously, vets could not access the database in such a way, but they can now.Therfore, wouldn't it be that the simplest thing (at least for NSW) is to have Vet scan a dog when it comes in which deletes the need for an additional card? Microchipping should be the same in all states. About a year ago a few vets that I called said that they don't scann as a routin unless someone brings in a stray and that there are alot of different registers/database it would be very time consuming going through each one. If it's like you say then thats great (I didn't know). Yes, I think Microchipping should be the same in all states too.

I've never heard of that. Do you have any references? I'm just curious. Ta. I was told this by a few shelters/vets.....they said microchips can move to another part of the body thus when they scann sometimes it can be missed and then they think the dog doesn't have a chip and then they Microchip again.

Yes! I totaly agree with this, if whoever finds the dog takes it to the pound, vet or calls the local ranger but I was talking about when someone wants to keep your pet the last thing they will do is get it scanned. There have also been cases where dogs have been found with two or three microchips in them...so what happend there?
-
Well I didn't necessary expect vets to police this. I would not have a clue who would be able to police this type of thing. You can't take a child to see a doctor with out medicare/ID so why should it be different with our pets that are members of our family?
-
I have been wondering for some time if there should be a better system that works in regards to making it easier for owners to be reunited with their stolen pets. This is what I thought of. Why not make a type of card like a Medicare card that can be scanned and dog scanned to match details on Card at every vet visit? Card can possibly hold a brief medical history too. In cases where pets are stolen the Microchip is useless. I am curious to know of others views; there may be something I haven’t considered. What do you think about this? Pros and cons? Thank you in advance.

Yes, exactly. Boxerheart, just a comment - to be a business you do not have to make profit, but that is the usual aim for a business though. Many businesses do not make profit. For example, Charities are run like businesses but they are not about making profit. Business isn't a dirty word, nor is profit for that matter either. I think thats the problem - that most beeders don't see or want to see themselves as a business, some beeders here are agreeing with some of what Steve said.eg Their right to set a non-refundable deposit. So it looks like some feel the need to act like a business only when they have to find homes for their dogs. I think some breeders want it both ways because of the demands in their unique hobby.

that's ok i claim the bad pet owner award whole heartidly. could hear meowing yesterday couldn't find the cat so gave up. lunch time i open fridge and guess who wanders out ;) he went in whilst kids were getting school lunch out he is only a kitten so wasn't noticed. he was fine too but boy did i feel bad A similar thing happend to my mother when we were little. She could hear meowing and she opened the fridge and out came the cat. She thinks cat went in when she was packing the groceries away earlier

Perth girl Breeders are also buyers and we need to go through all the leg work same as you. I thought breeders would have it easier ….I would think that, especially if they know that you show and have experience … wouldn’t they want you to own one of theirs dogs?(of course taking into consideration that some may not want you to have their lines)
