Couldn't find any rescue or breeders in ACT but found a breeder in NSW and have both emailed and left a phone message. About the pups....yes, very concerning given the parentage.

I was looking at some of the rescue group sites and was surprised to see a Pharaoh Hound on one of them in Canberra! I thought they were somewhat rare??? I'll surf the net and see if there is a PH Rescue. :confused http://www.canberrapoochrescue.org.au/site/CPR_dogs_large.html#Tess

If you are an owner of a dog that belongs to a 'dangerous breed' category and you also have a small child please take this as a warning. Don't leave your dog with the child unattended under any circumstances. Only a little moment was enough for the following to happen. See the photo attached ....

Hiya Wagsalot Is Riley long legs on tick prevention? You should be ok if he is and you are checking him but it's so easy for me to miss the odd one or ten on Shelties and Collies.

I haven't had time to read it yet but just found this site on the net. I'll have a good read tomorrow. I was searching for any insecticide (that is SAFE FOR ANIMALS) that can be used in gardens. http://www.tickalert.org.au/envictrl.htm

Hiya mysticpaw, No pond or water since the foxes killed the last of the ducks. :D No long grass and in fact precious little grass at all thanks to the doggies The block is trees, low growing shrubs, bulbs in Spring and a few other flowering perenials. Mind you, I've been like a mad woman the last few days ripping out plants left right and centre! If I even come close to losing one of my dogs I'll pave everything in sight! :p Yep. Definitely Ixodes Holocyclus (retired vet nurse :p ). I use Proban every second day and hopefully, any I miss when I go over them will die before doing too much damage but it still worries me because they inject a small amt of poison before the Proban kills them. Hiya benny123, I've suspected that some of the ticks came from our garden for a while now but with such an increase lately, I tested it out and didn't take them anywhere for a few days. Yep I knew bandicoots are hosts but I don't find any holes so my vet said it's probably the possums. We've had a lot of development going on around us and previous bushland is now blocks of flats so we now are plagued by possums on our block as there's precious little other places nearby they can go. Ditto re the Frontline in Winter! One of mine was hospitalised. Not only had I been administering it fortnightly but had only administered it 2 days prior. Hiya Clyde, They've been in the shire for as long as I've lived here and that's about 32 years. It might depend on where you go. I can recall some of our obedience club members picking up ticks from the bush around the edge of the ovals where we train and that's at least 15 yrs ago. Thanks all. I guess there isn't much more I can do other than continue giving them Proban, checking over them daily and ripping out low growing plants. Our place is up for sale and when sold we're moving to acreage. The main stipulation I made when we were deciding where to go was NOT A TICK AREA! :D We're going to Boorowa (halfway between Yass and Young) and it's too cold there for ticks (thank you lord ). Mind you, guess I'll have snakes to deal with then :D . There's always something out to get our dogs hey?

Is it also a tick area?

Tell me about it frufru. I have 3 Shelties and 2 Collie Roughs. Yesterday alone I removed 4 ticks from one Sheltie and one from another.

I've lived in the Shire for years and although we've had a tick problem when out bushwalking, I haven't had a problem on my own property..........until now. The tick problem in the general area has increased over the years and where once we had a tick "season" we now get them all year round. Lately I have been removing many more ticks from my dogs. I conducted an experiment and kept the dogs at home for a few days. The result was that the majority of the ticks are being picked up in my own garden! Today was pretty typical lately when I removed 4 ticks from one Sheltie, one from another and one from a Collie (and I haven't finished checking them yet). We're on a large bush block (approx 1/3 acre) but the flora hasn't changed. It has always been a bush block. So.........anyone any ideas as to why the sudden problem? We have always had possums which my vet says probably host ticks. ETA: anyone else in the Shire having the same problem on their property?

I'm in a tick area and have tried just about everything. Frontline (and Frontline Plus) is no longer working according to some vets I've spoken with and proven when I almost lost one of my dogs to tick paralysis. She was regularly being Frontlined every fortnight (recommended for tick control) and had actually had it applied only 2 days before she came down with the paralysis. I now use Proban tablets at the recommended dose for ticks (alternate days). I hate shoving anything down my dogs throats that isn't necessary but have no choice. I go over all my Shelties and Collies EVERY day but it is so easy to miss one of the little suckers. For instance, a tick can be down the ear canal where you can't see or feel it. A friend of mine lost a Collie that way. I have serious concerns about a major increase in ticks where I live but I'll start another thread called 'Ticks - Sutherland Shire' rather than hi-jack this one.

I've tried just about everything and found Proban to be the most effective. I buy it cheaper online so shop around.

Rest Peacefully little Miracle. As tiny and fragile as you were, you lived for a while. Your family knew you and you'll live forever in their hearts............. Laddie Braveheart will find a silver harness small enough for 'The Littlest Angel'. :p Dear Hesa.....I can only offer my warmest thoughts and a 'cyberhug'........wish it was more. :p ETA this too for Jemma........

Hi Abbey, Highly unlikely it would be a foot/pad injury if there is no sign of lameness. Like others on here, I've had Shelties for many years and none have displayed what you describe except for some of my oldies who had developed CHF (Congestive Heart Failure). I'm a retired vet nurse and if you want to take your dog's pulse, here are some hints: A pulse occurs with every heart beat. Sometimes, you can just place your hands low on your dog's chest (left hand side), near the elbow joint, and feel the heart beats. You can count how many beats you feel in 15 seconds and then multiply it be 4. That will give you the pulse. We usually check the femoral pulse however. It is high on the inner side of the thigh. Place two fingers on the middle of the thigh near where the leg joins the body. You need to record her pulse rate both before and after exercise and the most important info you can provide your vet with is details of the exercise (how long and how vigorous). If it's difficult for you to take her pulse yourself, take her to the vet before exercise and have the nurse record the pulse rate. Then take her for a walk and back to the vet to have the nurse take the pulse rate after exercise. Again, the length of the exercise and how strenuous it was will be beneficial to the vet. I take my Shelties camping and bushwalking ( some tracks we do are around a 5 hour walk) and even their daily trip to the park consists of AT LEAST 2 hours (walking/running/fetching etc). A vet check is my advice. What have you got to lose???? Hope all is well and nothing too serious.

Pulling Washing Off The Line

Another method is blow up a balloon, hide it inside something on the line and when the dog bites it it bursts and gives them a fright.....might work
