  1. Hey Jed - know you will be beyond speechless when you find out that I have managed to create (just for you) a rare BLUE....Teacup Sized NON-shedding Lithuanian Goat Herd-er-doodle!!!! Now isn't that worth getting better for?????? (Thinking the wrath of Jed may descend on me any moment I will hide amongst all of you in the waiting room - she will never think to look for me here!!)
  2. Just had a quick look at the What's good about them? What's Bad about them? My gosh - not one single breed seems like a good choice for anyone LOL I agree it is great to point out the possible downsides but it is really important to remember not ALL those traits apply to EVERY dog in that breed!!
  3. I think Lambo is doing an amazing job of really researching and being very open-minded when it comes to their choice! I do agree that many of the issues such as destructiveness barking when alome etc are actually training issues more than breed issues (I know breed type has an influence but it is not the sole determinant!) Maybe they should go for a Wei (seems like their first choice) but look for an older pup rather than a baby puppy?
  4. Hi everyone, I am picking up my baby Newf on Thursday and was just wondering...I haven't read a great deal about them as it relates to their aptitude for training. (even the breed sub-forum here was pretty sparse) Do any breeders or owners here have any tips or insights into what methods work best on these gorgeous dogs? Are they more likely to be motivated by food or affection or is that a very individual thing? I know they are bred to be life-saving water dogs but are there any other fields that they are particularly adept at?
  5. I like many many types of dog and can actually find something to fall in love with in every breed BUT I chose my Newfie cos I wanted a big dog cos they are great to cuddle with and make me feel safe, they are so calm and even-tempered and I think they are incredibly beautiful! Welcome to DOL - what a great question as an icebreaker Hayley! I have posted a couple of pics of my new baby in the puppy thread.
  6. Thanks Clastic - I am pretty excited but nervous too. Had kind of forgotten how much energy and work a puppy is but am sure that once I stop thinking so much and actually get him home in my arms - it will all be worth it!
  7. Hi everyone - have been oohing and aahing over all your beautiful babies and decided to take the plunge and announce.....I am getting a baby boy...Newfie in about a week!! We are still discussing names but so far Luka and Buck have the front running
  8. You have all been so great with my other questions - I am hoping this will be my last for a while - so just need some suggestions as where to get anti-drool bibs from please?
  9. OK dividers seem like a brilliant idea - who sells them? Do they usually come with the crate? Can anyone recommend good brands or good places to buy from? More questions sorry!
  10. Hi everyone, we are getting a baby Newf soon and I am keen to do crate training but the crates that will fit her when she is grown seem HUGE for her now! Should we just get a baby puppy bed now (she will be sleeping in our bedroom) and transfer her to a crate when she is older or start with a crate immediately?
  11. Wow - thank you all very much! Have found some wonderful collars and am now spoilt for choice!
  12. Hi I have found a lot of sites that do funky custom made collars for small dogs. Is there any site that does the same for the Giant breeds please?
  13. That is kind of my thinking too - I cant really imagine a Newfie actually baring teeth and growling at an itruder but again, I have no experience to back that up
  14. I have been reading a lot of dog books and surfing the Net to make sure taht we cghoose the right dog for our family and at this stage we are leaning heavily towards a Leonberger or a Newfoundland. Several of the books I have read say that Newfies are excellent family dogs very easy-goig and protective. I have met several Newfs and would not have thought of them as being particularly protective but I am ready to stand corrected. Any breeders or owners have an opinion on this?
  15. Thank you Mita. Perhaps it is different if they are undesexed? I think the breeder was referring to two entire bitches but I would have thought if they were both desexed and introduced as young as our two are - then it should be fine???
  16. Hi everyone - still new here but wanted some advice - we have an 18 month old Spaniel (a bitch) and are hoping to get a German Shepherd puppy in the next few weeks. We had wanted another girl as we love the generally more *feminine* temperament of the females but a GSD breeder was quoted on another forum as saying to never get a female puppy with another female dog in the house Are we asking for trouble? WE really would prefer to get another girl but still have time to choose another puppy if we have to.
