Pedigree Dog Segment On The 7pm Project
Marion 01 replied to huski's topic in General Dog Discussion
Why not study nature, all the animals and their way of keeping only the best and strongest of the lines etc. No one out there to tell them when to breed and with whom, they keep their lines very close. In some animals if a prospective male from other lines comes in hoping to mate with the females, they get shortshifted very smartly, and if a mating does occur the babies are killed because the lines have been violated. We could learn invaluable lessons from studying their behaviour re breeding and the family structure. They haven't got the benefit of science to tell them what to do, like we have. -
Pedigree Dog Segment On The 7pm Project
Marion 01 replied to huski's topic in General Dog Discussion
So toydog, what do you thinkof the British Kennel club haveing done this, they are now an open stud book for all breeds including chi, any dogs that looks like the breed passes any maditory health tests will be registered, 3 generations later the pups are full KC registration ready for export to OZ! Actually this is what happened way back in the 1930's with the Tibetan Terriers, one of the main sires of early litters was an unknown parentage dog found on a dockside and was accepted into the studbook because he looked like a TT, went in front of a panel and was judged to have all the characteristics of a TT, so therefore must have been a TT, he went on to be the foundation sire of one of the well known kennels of the early years. However the lady who was the foundation breeder of the TTs was not amused to have this happen and the shit hit the fan so to speak, but life went on and he went on to produce lots more progeny. No DNA tests back then, just observation. So history is repeating itself, gee haven't we come a long way, not. -

Hey I don't mean to start world war 3, but, another fact of life would be if the intended breeding selection, sire, dam, progeny, were not true to their paperwork (pedigree) it does/has happened, is happening. So where does that leave things??? -
How To Stop My Dog From Scratching After His Operation
Marion 01 replied to GSDowner's topic in General Dog Discussion
Did they disinfect the area on his belly before the op with betadine/iodine, some dogs can have allergic reactions to this. (Don't know what vets use now as it has been many years since I have had my dogs done) I have had a couple of mine drive themselves and me crazy, itching and licking the area. I tried washing it in warm salty water, using cortisone cream, also pawpaw ointment, even given them polaramine 2mg but nothing really seems to relieve it, it just takes it's time to come good. My dogs get clipped close on their bellies as part of their 3 monthly clip, and none of them have a reaction to the clipping. -
Talking to someone at a dog show is a good idea, but depends on the person you are going to talk to. Most people who are at dog shows are showing dogs, and we know just how frazzled nerves become, and most people are running on adrenalin. Need a situation where it is a more relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of time to talk to anyone wanting to know about a particular breed or we need to have a website or available media with the names of trusted people, their Kennel names etc, breeds of dogs and what the hereditary problems are in their breeds and the fact that they are DNA testing (if it is available in that breed) or what testing they are doing to help eradicate these problems. The Pros and Cons of owning a particular breed, the suitability of that breed for the family etc etc. The general public need to know where to access all this information in the first place. People who are not in the dog world would not have a clue where to find a particular breed, most people phone their vets to see if they know of a breeder of a certain dog. I don't know that any governing dog bodies would do any more than they are doing right now, and that is absolutely nothing. I would love to see the pedigree dog given the good rap it deserves

Minxy, Is the front of the house fenced where he is chained, or just the back section of the yard ? He may even be protecting himself if he feels threatened by being tethered, if there is no fence there he would be quite vulnerable to attack himself.

Puppies like reassurance, and it is a big shock to them to be suddenly all alone after knowing nothing else but having his/her mum and siblings for company. Then having to learn a whole new daily routine such as where to pee without getting into trouble etc. They also like to follow you everywhere until they get to know the new environment. I have stood at the sink washing up with a puppy asleep on my feet, and every time I move puppy moved and this went on for a week and then puppy becomes more confident and doesn't need the" in your pocket" experience. In the days before crate training when I bought a puppy home, I made up his/her bed in a laundry basket with the front cut out and with nice soft blankets etc and it was put near my side of the bed so that if puppy woke up and started crying, I could just put my hand down and let him/her know that they were not alone. Hardly heard a peep out of puppy after that. Sometimes far too much is expected of a young pup in a new environment. Given time and patience, things fall into place nicely. My last puppies are now 8 years old and were crate trained.

Hi Newfoundlandandus, So sorry for the sudden loss of your Isabella. We had the same thing happen to our 8 yr old Chinese Crested Powder Puff, Benny, last year. He went off his food for a couple of days, which was very unlike him, but other than that he seemed fine, he ate a little bit the next night, and we thought, that's good, but the next morning he was really not himself, so we took him to the vet and had bloods done, and the vet came back and said he was right off the scale and was in acute renal failure. Nothing could have prepared us for this, as he was still a young dog, and never in our wildest thoughts did we suspect something as serious as this.

Clippers - Thinking Of Changing
Marion 01 replied to Andisa's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have Wahl 2 speed clippers that have been doing 17 dogs for the past 5 years, and previously had Wah single speed that I had been using on all the dogs for at least 5 years, but I don't use Wahl blades I only use the Oster blades. I do have a set of Oster clippers that have hardly been used, but are needed for backup. I find the Wahl don't get as hot as the Osters, and are lighter and far more ergonomic for my hands. Have never tried any of the other brands. -

How To Buy Bolognese Dogs In Australia
Marion 01 replied to bologneseluver's topic in General Dog Discussion
If you google" Bolognese dog breed in Australia", you will be able to go into pets4sale and see that there is a breeder in Australia. I didn't even know they were being bred here. -
There is a big difference in being bred for aggression and having the protective instinct. Tibetan Terriers in their native country were very good watch dogs and you approached their home with caution, they still to this day are wary of strangers, but are not aggressive. The biggest worry is the undesirable type of people who get their hands on any aggressive breed, would be almost impossible to monitor.

So so sorry for your loss Zug Zug. I remember when Mozart had his op, and thought about our own Bichons and what tough little treasures they were. Zamba will need a companion to help him through the loss of his friend, and it will also help you too.

What To Use For Dental Hygiene
Marion 01 replied to ruthless's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We give our dogs beef neckbones from Coles with plenty of beef still left on them. As our 8 dogs are medium sized dogs, the bones cut in half are really good. After having a dog nearly choke on the last small bit of brisket bone once, and the fact that there is always someone who throws up afterwards we hadn't given them bones for a long time, and their teeth were shocking, but over the past few months they have been having these 1/2 size meaty beef neck bones with fantastic results, the bones are hard and they can't chew much off them, but it is doing wonders for their teeth. I wish we had started it a lot sooner. -
I have always said please, thank you, and sorry & excuse me to my dogs. They love me unconditionally and I think they deserve respect like anyone else. I have even said sorry to one of their fluffy toys that are around the floor, because I thought I had stepped on someones paw, feel like a bit of a dork afterwards and hope hubby didn't notice otherwise I would never hear the end of it. :D

What Shampoo Is Best For An Itchy Dog?
Marion 01 replied to PuddleDuck's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The shampoo I have found that worked really well on a couple of my non specific itchy dogs, is Selsun Gold (not the blue one). It made such a difference to my dogs skin, and also it leaves them feeling nice and soft. Would be well worth a try. -
8 years ago I had an accidental mating of one of my Tibetan Terriers and my Chinese Crested Powder Puff, the result was 4 girls, I kept them all and that made 17 dogs in all, but we are now down to 8 with a lot of the oldies passing over the last two years. They were wonderful as pups and growing up and integrated beautifully into the rest of the family, as they matured they tended to do the sibling rivalry thing, and also tended to be their own pack, one bitch would like to be the alpha female, but as I am the alpha person with the dogs this has not happened. Don't know that I would deliberately get siblings, but the same age wouldn't bother me.

Nice cubs, but when you look at it in that light ( maybe a publicity stunt) and also seeing as it was in China, what happened to the pups the dog gave birth to ?????? Hmmm.
