I think it was still legal in WA for a while. Maybe it still is and they’re being docked over there? There were many breeders who thought their right to cut off tails was justified when the tide turned and the new legislation was introduced. I assume there are many who still think along these archaic lines and believe it is necessary?

What’s the percentage of breeders who sell MR only, and also import dogs into their bloodlines do you think?
-
The LR/MR issue was discussed recently in another thread. Pedigree dogs are on the decline and have been for at least 20 years. I agree with a point made in that discussion that this is a contributor to that downhill slide. I’d keep trying to find your pup from a breeder that shares your values. Don’t give up. Perhaps through developing a relationship with one that you’ve already spoken with? Once they feel more comfortable with you, trust might grow?

I made the comment prior to anyone commenting so I'm not quite sure what you mean? I was forewarning the OP that no-one here would advise them to get a cross breed as its against the intent and purpose of the group.

Wow, way to read something into a comment that doesn’t exist. relax and stop looking at every comment as a reason to debate. I didn’t say it wasn’t important or should be ignored. I said it’s not a new concept. Bacteria exists and more so in raw animal products. The article actually says Jack shit in all reality. It doesn’t make any conclusive statements about raw feeding being detrimental. It’s nothing more than an opinion piece with the statement that raw feeding ‘may’ be a cause of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Funnily enough, most of the information I’ve ever read is that abuse of our miracle drug, the antibiotic, is the issue. I have had some personal experience with CA-MRSA. I gather you’re against raw feeding. Well go you. You do you and others will do themselves. I’ve been around long enough to know these arguments are just a waste of time and they amuse me more now than anything. My advice to you is to accept that opinions are just that - opinions. Slamming your opinion down the throats of others will not win you a debate, or friends. Trust me on that one. ;)

Interesting cross. She’s looks very sweet. -
Two things - this is a forum for purebred dogs and encouraging you to buy a cross breed is actually against the ethos of the group. The second thing is - think carefully about the breed and temperament of the dog not just in terms of tomorrow, but in years to come. Teens grow up and become busy with friends and life so you can’t rely on them. I think your use of the words ‘hopefully keep it active’ might also signal you suspect they may not. So, unless you know that YOU definitely will have the energy and time for the next 10 + years, a high energy and smart dog may become an issue for you and a liability. I’ve never owned any of the breeds you mention but they’re all intelligent and high energy and unless they’re in the right environment and their needs met, they’ll develop behavioural issues like any dog. The biggest reason why most dogs end up in pounds and shelters and needlessly dying, or being given away, is failed expectations of the owners. It’s not that there are too many dogs being born. Safeguard yourself from being a contributor to this problem by thinking carefully about how the dog will fit in with your lifestyle before you buy. A well matched dog will bring 10-17 years of love, wonderful memories and companionship.

Meh, bacteria in raw meat and animal products is nothing new. The issue is hygiene. Certainly now with COVID, the world should totally ‘get’ the concept of washing hands and hygiene No one should care who feeds what.

What is the Purpose of the Limited Register?
~Anne~ replied to YOLO's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree. Although again I see 2 different issues - breeders and pedigrees. A pedigree is in all reality is a document, based on the knowledge and honesty of the information source - a person who is completing a form verifying a litter. It shows nothing more than a name and a lineage. It does not show genetic, physical or temperament characteristics so its value in determining a dog fit for requirements is questionable. Breeders are another matter. I actually would not condemn breeding of a litter of pups without a pedigree. I agree with your statement about people other than 'purebred' breeders, breeding dogs of value. Somewhere along the way, over the last 20 years or more, we've turned this into a war - the pure and the not pure - the registered and the not registered. We've called people to arms and to take sides - your either a purist or you're not. We lump all people breeding dogs, which do not have traditional pedigrees, into baskets of profiteering, abuse and greed and the pedigree breeders into saints and automatically 'ethical' (what on earth does this even really mean?!). Its bizarre. We claim dogs are 'part of our family' but low and behold if they have a fault we demand refunds! Not very family like... but I digress... For me personally, its a risk and desires measure. I like specific styles of dogs with specific characteristics, and this also applies to cats. So I choose to buy dogs and cats that are of a breed that I know is known for those characteristics. By choosing purebred dogs (and cats) of specific breeds, I am not saying that all others dogs have no value though. -
What is the Purpose of the Limited Register?
~Anne~ replied to YOLO's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree with this for the most part, however, I do see some concerns around showing dogs of poor quality and its reflection on the breeder. Still, that then opens up the whole purpose of showing - which I think needs discussion and redefining. The world and its people (society) are changing but we still hold fast on to age old ideas and concepts in many things. Don't get me wrong, many of these concepts are sound and should be preserved, but many need to reviewed in the context of the future. -
I think there are two separate issues; language and governing body. There have been issues around the meaning of the word 'registered' for many years. Why hasn't the ANKC and state bodies moved to change their language so that there is no confusion? I've spoken with dozens of people over the years who have said 'but they said they're a registered breeder' and when I've asked what they think that means, they think its council registration or something else. Rarely do they say it means they're registered with the ANKC or DogsNSW or similar. The second issue is regarding central governance, and as sandgrubber pointed out above, this may be a good thing.

Norwegian court cracks down on flat-faced dog breeds
~Anne~ replied to lillypilly's topic in In The News
I’m not sure I’d bother to read a Daily Mail article and take anything in it as factual. -
I thought it was still illegal to dispose of dogs in landfill? It’s worse for cat owners. They’re rarely scanned for a chip.

Norway has banned breeding of 2 breeds.
~Anne~ replied to Kirislin's topic in General Dog Discussion
There’s a discussion going in the news threads on this if you’re interested. -
Bills like this get thrown up often. It encourages debate and action, which is good, and it helps prevent laws and ideas becoming ineffective and out of date. There has to be pretty strong support for a Bill to pass through and, even then, there’s more work and debate for it to move forward again if it is passed initially. I can’t see this one going anywhere. I don’t think there is much support. Debate was adjourned on it late last year.

Norwegian court cracks down on flat-faced dog breeds
~Anne~ replied to lillypilly's topic in In The News
It’s been coming for a long time. I’m surprised this kind of action isn’t more widespread around the world. Interesting that they’ve only selected two breeds. Im not experienced with pekes and cavs, but as a life-long owner of pugs, and running a pug rescue, I can’t say I’ve ever seen a pug without some respiratory concerns out of the multitude I’ve had anything to do with. Eyes also, but not so prevalent as the breathing. Brachy or meso - all the same - the very fact it has a shortened respiratory system means it’s defective given the nature of the canine respiratory system, incl temperature control. -
I agree with this. Pedigrees, human or animal, rely on the honesty and knowledge of the human inputting the detail.

~Anne~ replied to Katdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Aww, Kat. I’m so sorry to hear Jodie’s not well. I’ve canned fb so haven’t seen any updates from anyone. Could the excursion to the yard be coincidental, as mentioned above? The only way you can really get it sorted is to take her to the vet. I’d explain your anxiety and reasons. I’m still on messenger if you want to chat. X
