Sorry, I simply don't have time to continue in such a petty conversation with you Blackdog. When and if I have the time I will post the statistics that show that less than 40% (approx) of animals are reclaimed in Victorian pounds and that more than 1/3 of all dogs impounded are killed. However, you can continue to throw your opinion around about most being happily reunited if it keeps you feeling good, and making petty little accusations up about anyone who offers a different view.

It is commonly used by pound staff to id the database the chip is registered with, it is a wonderful too. Except for NSW chips and given mandatory chipping has been in for many, many years in NSW, that's a lot of dogs and cats that won't show on it.
-
This actually happened to me personally. Monte's details were never entered onto the NSW CAR. Thankfully it was discovered when I was checking rescue dog chips still registered to me and the list of dogs under my details did not include one of my own. The chip system, as others have said, is far from perfect and a lot of improvements could be made very simply. Even creating 1 single national database would be a logical start. One day..... one day.

Usually what happens is if you contact your registered database with a chip number, they can check any other databases in the state for you. If it's registered to an interstate database, they may not be able to check the details but they can give you the name of the database so that you can contact them directly. It's usually a pretty sound system, but as mentioned earlier, complications do arise. Sorry, in pounds the normal course of action is nothing like you describe and I am getting a little tired of you effectively telling me to suck eggs on this. When a stray dog comes in the staff do not check every database. As for accusing you of lying, you are being a drama queen. I asked you what world you lived in because your explanations and comments were not realistic and were incorrect. You've made your way through this thread patting people on the head with smilies and condescending agreement comments if they say something you like and you have passive aggressively reacted to any comment that isn't to your liking. Your statements about lost dogs being returned, and chips, are based on opinion and you state them as fact. My comments are based on FACTS and after many years debating, researching, working in and being an advocate for change in animal welfare issues I find your posts offensive and your accusations way off base.
-
Not to mention the different microchip databases and the fact that most only check the database relevant to their state. As families become more transient, so do dogs.
-
I often wonder how often chips and pups are mixed up. I'm sure it must happen.

In my opinion the OP doesn't want to reveal pound names or locations because they know they are waxing lyrical about the subject. This seems to be a trend of the newcomers on this forum in recent times. The creation of many threads and a post count that skyrockets in a short time and an inability to accept that others will offer opinions in opposition to theirs. I so miss the discussions of previous times.

Is It Illegal To Sell Pups Under 8 Weeks?
~Anne~ replied to Atanquin's topic in General Dog Discussion
All states are different. I think Tas is still actually offering 6 weeks as the gernal rule although this may have been updated. Most states only have guidelines on ages, not law. -
Stopping Licking Pulling Stitches Out ?
~Anne~ replied to sparkycat's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There are antiseptic products that you can buy to deter licking that you spray on the wound. To be honest though, the Elizabethan collar is probably the most effective. -
I think you need to learn to accept that others hold differing opinions and that on a public forum you will undoubtedly have your opinions challenged. You've jumped on everyone here that has offered anything different to what you think including telling people that the are not reading what you have said and yet you tell me that I am being rude. As I said, whilst it is ok to say that people should follow the law, and I agree with this, it is not ok to give them reasons why they should follow the law that are false.
-
Do I like cats - definitely. At times I think they're better than dogs... at other times I think they're not. As I get older I think I prefer cats but the thought of building a run or simialr to contain them doesn't excite me... so cats are now out of the question since my gorgeous Miss Molly passed.
-
If you don't want alternative opinions, don't post. Btw, I am not rude, just blunt. Whilst it is ok to say that people should follow the law (I totally agree with this) it is not ok to give them reasons why they should follow the law that are false. Dogs do die in pounds and more dogs are lost than are ever found again.

I'm not sure what world you live in but yours sure is different to mine. Most pounds do equate to euthanasia although this is changing and some are doing it better than others. As for more being returned, I can't agree with that generalisation either. I live in a world in which I work closely with pounds on a day to day level. Of course pounds do have surrenders who often don't make it, but of the animals that come in lost, most are returned. Really? I guess LDH has picked up its game then. I would add a rolling eye emoticon here but people seem to despise it so.... Victoria is well known the have the most archaic animals laws in Australia and given that microchip identification was only made mandatory fairly recently in the scheme of things, I think you live in a fantasy world.

Where Is The Best Dog Friendly Place To Live With A Beach
~Anne~ replied to seeana's topic in General Dog Discussion
Kiama. Affordable housing. Beaches, ocean and river together. 8 different coastal leash free areas. Some areas are time restricted whilst others aren't. See here: www.kiama.nsw.gov.au/environment-services/pdf/Rangers/Dog-Off-Leash-brochure.pdf -
Wouldn't it still be under warranty after a year? I am sure mine has a longer warranty. I love my Roomba and use her very regularly.

I feed twice a day exactly 12 hours apart due to Monte's needs and his meds.

Why Are So Many Cats And Dogs Being Pts In Pounds?
~Anne~ replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's American, although I do concede that similar scenes would play out here. I think people overall need to learn customer service skills if they deal with 'customers' of any type. The world is lacking in customer service skills in this day and age. -
Why Are So Many Cats And Dogs Being Pts In Pounds?
~Anne~ replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
Aphra, I agree so much with what you have posted. I see so much energy wasted with many current campaigns, meanwhile, dogs keep ending up in pounds and dogs keep dying in pounds. I think the issue of cats in pounds and dogs in pounds is very different too. They share some commonalities but the strategies to correct the issue would neeed to suit each species, and not smething that is lumped together for both. -
Affordable Anti-bark Collars Under $100
~Anne~ replied to dilemmax's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd love one of these if it would work on Monte when he starts crying at 4.30am. It wouldn't work though, only a miracle will save him I think! He's untrainable. -
Head firmly in sand with this breed and one or two others. I was smacked by Troy for saying a similar thing in the past so I think I'll just leave it at that.

Why Are So Many Cats And Dogs Being Pts In Pounds?
~Anne~ replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
You can't answer such a complex situation with a poll like this. -
I also psted this in the rescue thread about the same thing. It seems it is exaggerated and it applies to the US. http://www.foxnews.c...y-be-dangerous/

Have We Got Our Priorities Right?
~Anne~ replied to Blonde_Phoenix's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd agree that there would be multiple causes and I think that although there may be common ground, the reason behind a breeder leaving the hobby and a potential breeder not taking up the hobby, would be two different things as well. Either way, promotion and support would assist regardless of the outcome of a reveiw. A reveiw would be the first step in the right direction though.
