  1. It’s interesting reading the various opinions in this thread. I can recall a debate I have had in the past about a little Pug that I re-homed that was dog aggressive (yes, it seems it can occur on the occasion in the breed) and I was told I should have euthanased her. I am not sure anyone can make a reasonable judgement on such scant information that was given here and we all hold our own opinions on what is right and wrong when it comes to aggression in dogs. I maintain that size, breed and circumstance play a huge role and there is no 'one rule fits all' in these debates.
  2. I chose 'other' as they are not loose in the house but they do have access inside and they have access outside. They come and go as they choose through a dog door but I have a portable fence that contains them to an area and stops them from roaming through the house. The fence is also put up at night for them to sleep. As for crating, I don't agree with it even for evenings. Dogs were not meant to be caged and I believe there is a gradual increase in the acceptance of crating dogs for long periods of time which is not a good thing. If you have to regularly and repeatedly contain a dog, why not contain it to an area that it is still able to walk around, like a room? Crating a dog to recover from an injury or for other short term and specific purposes however is acceptable in my opinion.
  3. You said raw meat which to many may mean mince or meat only. What's the wink for?
  4. My dogs get an egg or two per week. I crack them into the bowl and the whole lot is eaten. No preparation and the whole lot is finished very quickly. (I am also very popular during baking as the dogs get the shells then too and I have 6 waiting pleading for a bit of shell!!) It is the ratio with phosphorus that is important, but I aim for a balance over a week or two, rather than trying to balance each and every meal and if you feed raw meat you should be fine. You certainly won't go wrong with an occasional egg. Just remember if you feed the insides of the egg to feed the whole egg not just the yolk. The body is pretty good at regulating slight irregularities, particularly with how much they will absorb from food :) If you feed raw meat without bone, then you will need the added calcium as the calcium/phosperous ratio will be out. Washing doesn't dry them out. Th easiest way is to place the egg shells in the microwave until they become brittle, then you grind them into a powder with a mortar and pestle. It takes a few minutes and you end up with a very concentrated calcium supplement.
  5. In the end it all comes down to the rescue group, the rescuer and the day. In having said that, I firmly believe that all rescues should operate as a business and not as a charity firstly and as an organisation that prevents unneccessary euthanasia of animals secondly. Without the first you can't do the second. What cases, dogs and homes each rescue takes on is their decision though and should be made with forethought and within the guidelines set down by that group.
  6. Oh hello! I didn't know you had joined DOL too. You'll find DOL a wonderful source of information as well. My advice though is to steer clear of the politics on here. You'll soon understand this staement if you don't already. :) I haven't checked my emails as yet, but will later.
  7. Sure, I understand. Are you able to describe the difference between the pic you have and the Kendra pugs. I think I have seen it described as full colour and not a fawn with lots of guard hairs, which would be smutty. The Kendra pugs appera to have full colour.
  8. I think the bit about being treated badly is from her blog (there is a link off her site to it). It seems she feels that the AKC hasn't treated her fairly with her breeding program.
  9. You won;t find them in the animal aisle. They're compost bins and kept where the other compost bins are kept. Edited to add a description - it is flat packed and consists of 4 mesh panels that are almost square.
  10. My pugs like everyone although Boof will bark incessantly at one of my brothers. I am not sure why it started but my brother now enjoys encouraging him. I rarely see my brother and yet when he does walk through my door Boof immediately reacts.
  11. Puglvr, are you able to post up the pic you have. Have you heard before of the blue colour referred to on the American site?
  12. I've also used two joined together to make a fence across my yard. I use those plastic loop tie things to secure it as the coil ones that come with it aren't good with a lot of movement.
  13. This breeder is apparently breeding legitimate silver pugs in the US my US friends tell me. http://www.silverpug.cc/ Its an interesting read, although not overly detailed, and also talks of blue pugs.
  14. That's lovely. :) I also has cause to contact a Pug breeder last year after a couple contacted me regarding an 11 year old who needed to find a new home. The breeder had stopped breeding many years before, and in fact this pug if I recall was from her last litter, but she welcomed her back with open arms.
  15. The brindle gene must have been carried by one of the dogs. Pugs do not carry the brindle gene, just like, for example, the Maltese or poodle do not carry the gene for a black mask. :)
  16. I treated a couple of Pugs, one of which was really bad. We persisted with her baths and ivermectin (?) by mouth. It was Winter too and waiting the 10 minutes whilst she turned into an icicle was awful and I couldn't put a coat on her as the Vet said it best to let her skin breathe so she was a cold a lot. It took time, but she improved greatly.
  17. Thakfully with Pugs Ive never really had the issue. Perhaps try to get the trust back by buying a bbq'd chook and offering him a tidbit every 30 minutes or so, minus any meds, until he trusts you. Then using a pill cutter, break it up into the smallest bits you can (perhaps quarters). Place alittle in each tidbit. Offer him one with tablet, a couple without.
  18. I do want to strangle him each and every day anyway but he has been sleeping all morning so he has me lulled in to a false sense of serenity with his cuteness. I was in Palm Beach, Sydney. He is crate trained but the ticks are so bad there, no fencing and he is dirty indoors. He would have to be in a crate at all times except for toilet breaks which just isn't fair on him - and he would be vocal about it too! I had plans to catch up with friends each day and go shopping so I would have felt guilty knowing he was crated all day, plus all night. He is very active! I am going on a real holiday in March so am rethinking my options. I have the same girl house sitting and while I know she wouldn't take her eyes off him after what she went through, I think she would be relieved if he just wasn't here altogether. Last time I went away I boarded him with a friend in Sydney but I don't think she's keen to have him back....... I do have dogs runs though so I guess she could just treat him like a boarder, but he really loves being with us inside etc. He is snoring at my feet now!:D He's always welcome to spend some time with my 3 if you need to have him looked after.
  19. I can recall when you first came here looking for a puppy. It seems sooo long ago now. I came here because of Dougie.
  20. Clearly some cross bred Pugs with Bostons and French Bulldogs there and nothing to be proud and a lot of dogs with poor conformataion. I have to agree. Steve - there is no other colour in the 'traditional' Pug although some will argue the silver is a knwn gene. Pugs only have genes for balck and fawn. Apricot is a variation of fawn. I believe silver is as well. I used to have alink that explained the genetics of it in a way that we more readily understood by the layman, but I have lost it and a quick google has not made it re-surface. White, brindle and the rest are pugs that have had another breed introduced to breed a dog of that colour. There are some registries across the world now accepting these colours. The AKC still doesn't I don't think and they aren't accepted in the UK either I believe.
  21. Friday the 13th seems like a good omen for you!
  22. The silver is not actually a separate colour (although some will argue this). Silver is merely a version of smutty fawn. Pugs come in 2 colours only which are black and fawn. Apricot and silver are variations of these. There is no other colour in the breed.
  23. If he was wandering and he isn't taken to the local vet or pound they're doing the wrong thing. If they are taking him because they've found him then no one would be accusing then of anything as a thief wouldn't take him there looking for an owner. I understand what you are saying but I was thinking of the alert being more noticeable If it said stolen. Anyway, it was just a thought and possibly not a good one. I keep checking hoping he's snuffling and sneezing in Clydes arms already. Clyde, the bird idea might be a possibility but I wouldn't think it a high chance.
