  1. Is advertising the puppies in online classifieds - like the trading post or gumtree ok or not? if not - why not? if ok - when is it ok? Personally I'm not big on it. I thought breeders were supposed to meet demand ie have buyers lined up before the puppies arrived - so they'd never need to advertise on classifieds. But there are huge numbers of people who want an "instant puppy", and classifieds or pet shops is where they go to look. Should we be providing quality dogs for these people or leaving them to the breeders with no code of ethics? I can't see the correlation between this and advertising in the classifieds? I might have missed the link in the 5 pages of the thread though. I can't see anything wrong with advertising puppies anywhere in the media, be that social, print or digital. Selling a puppy doesn't make anyone a bad breeder or a good breeder. Edited to add: In fact, why is it made harder for purebred breeders to sell purebred dogs. The idea that they shouldn't advertise make sit harder. Its a free for all for cross bred dogs but purebreds are increasingly restricted through social surges in what is accpetable and what isn't and by their peers. (*Disclaimer: I am not specifcally saying you personally are making it harder, just in general)
  2. The photo and this thread should have come with a warning about the possible distress it may cause.
  3. I don't give a shit if Austin is a dog trainer, good or otherwise and I don't give a shit if feral cats need to be culled. I think the photograph is in poor taste and the position held by this person amplifies that poor taste. The argument for me is not the necessity or the action of killing and or culling in this instance but the image portrayed of a cat hanging by its neck and being held by a person who holds such a position.
  4. Is that a cat he is holding up. The photo is disturbing.
  5. Re: ANKC and pet shops. It might be that the ANKC can't prevent but they actually condone it.
  6. Personally, I am over hearing the term ethical bandied about. It is far to subjective and means diddly squat.
  7. Yes. It is a common problem on forums. It also makes for any interesting debate in relation to veils.
  8. Agree about treating the environment and the fact that most forget about this very important thing. Even when rescuing, I managed to avoid a flea problem. My dogs are still flea free thankfully.
  9. It' was great to log on and see that she's safe and sound.
  10. Kennel cough is most often no worse than the common cold that can affect humans. I'd follow Kirty's advice. It only becomes an issue if a bacterial infection is present and the body's natural defence can't deal with it.
  11. I am sure there are some who couldn't care or simply don't realise how annoying their child is. Still, I guess I look on the positive side of human nature and that there would be far more who would be stressed at their child disrupting orhers.
  12. I don't understand this. Only people who decide to have a child are going to be able to bring it up "me, me" style. Those of us who have no kids did not breed these selfish children. If a child is brought up in a 'me, me' style, or if children are considered the "me, me" generation why would anyone else want to be near them? If you think it is important to have extended family around kids, there is your reason why I should never have any. I am glad we live in a society that values individualism more than valuing traditional patriarchal family structures. It means that people like me that don't have the biological urge to breed are not trapped in a hideous life in servitude of the children we were expected to have. Try thinking of it in the context of "It takes a village to raise a child". :) That is what I am implying, that the nuclear (closed) family, where we don't have the benefit of the expected respect and input of say, the elderly, neighbours, close friends etc. creates a secular, self absorbed society and we raise children in this environment today. I still don't understand. isn't that up to you as parents? Surely it is up to you to teach you children respect and seek out input from those you want it. But really it is not up to everyone else to raise your child Don't know about the person most stressed about children screaming being the parents...I've have seen quite a number in shopping centres who don't seem to even notice their child is throwing the world's biggest tantrum I was referring specifically to air travel. Surely you've been on an aircraft? You must understand that aircraft cabins are claustrophobic at best and each traveller is forced to be almost on top of one another. I am amazed you can't see the difference between an aircraft and a shopping centre.
  13. Yes, but it was their choice to travel with the child. My choice is to travel without, and that includes other people's.. I too choose to travel without children but I understand that others can choose to travel with theirs. I guess I accept it as part and parcel of air travel and I am not so selfish that I view my happiness over the happiness of someone who chooses to travel with their child.
  14. That is indeed one of my reasons for not wanting to have a child. Well said. I feel exactly the same. So glad I wasn't born thirty + years earlier than I was. Yes, but it was their choice to travel with the child. My choice is to travel without, and that includes other people's. Read the last 15 pages again, you obviously missed something. Noone likes listening to the squealing of children on planes (particularly the parent) but until it is banned (aka never) I suggest you build a bridge or buy some ear plugs I don't think anyone's calling for it to be banned. The point here seems to have been lost along the way - that is, someone has the right to be moved in a plane if they don't want to sit next to a screaming child/man/woman/whoever. So they have the right?! I never knew that.
  15. When I am on a plane and a child is crying or doing things that children do it does stress me a touch. However, I feel so much for the person trying to care for them. Their stress levels must be double mine as they are getting less rest than me and they also are usually acutely aware that their child is disturbing others.
  16. Perhaps post in the rescue forum as rescuers are forever moving dogs around and someone there might know? Edit: ignore my post. I can see you have already asked the question in rescue!
  17. I love babies of any variety. Humans, dogs, cows, whatever. They're all cute and they all make me gush. I don't like dogs that jump at me or that are too energetic or that are aggressive. I dont like children that are too noisy, rude or energetic. It's the individual child or dog that I dislike. I like my latte child and dog free. I like my flights quiet and without stress. each to their own I guess.
  18. In NSW, yes, the pound must try to make contact with the chipped owner. This includes sending letters, emails and telephoning. If they are unable to contact the owner, the dog is considered to be abandoned and or unclaimed and after 14 days, the pound has authority to sell or dispose of the dog and alter the database to show the new details. I am not sure about other states.
  19. I took in surrenders regularly. The surrender form asked if they were the owner of the dog. I asked for existing microchip paperwork if they had it. However I did not own a scanner. After the dog was surrendered, it was taken tot he vet for a health check as a matter on normal procedure regardless of apprent perfect health. The dog was scanned at this check. Most often this did not pull up any discrepencies as Vets do not normally check for them. When I transferred the chip into my rescue was when I discovered if the chip details were under someone else's name. I did have 2 dogs that came in, were with me for several months and then re-homed. When they were surrendered I thought I had transferred the chip to my name. I followed normal procedures and sent the forms off to Council. Then when the dogs were re-homed I trasnferred the chips once again and sent the forms off to Council. At this point in time, my local Council were obviously way behind in data entry and so the fact that the dogs were listed as stolen wasn't picked up until several months after they had been re-homed. When I received the call from Council advising me I was horrified. Anyway, it was sorted out. The person who had surrendered them was an ex of the person who had listed them as stolen. It was a 'break-up' dispute that occurred several years prior. I spoke to him and he was happy to sign the dogs over to me, so the paoperwork in the order it was submitted (ie transferred to me and then the new owners) could be processed. I had another where the dog, now 8 years old, had been purchased as a puppy. The owner surrendered the dog to me beleiving it was chipped into his name. It turned out the breeder had never transferred the chip and she then declared the dogs was hers ans she wanted her back when I contacted her to ask her to sign the chip over. Understandably I said no, and I had the real owner send me all his Vet records and the recipt of purchase which luckily he still had. This evidence, plus a stat dec, was all that was needed to transfer the chip to me. Chips are not fool proof. Most things can be sorted out though.
  20. Danois - yes, I understand and agree with your comments. To be fair, I've never ever contemplated the security of postage as strange as that seems. I can't recall seeing anything about insurance either when I order online. Admittedly I don't order online every day but I have ordered from a variety of companies and a variety of products over the last few years and Ive never been asked to insure delivery. I have ordered 'priority' when I want the item quickly, but not registered or insured?? Perhaps it is just me and the sites I use though?
  21. I've never had this situation occur but I would expect the company to make good too and resend the product I paid for. I consider the onus on the company that sells in this manner to ensure I am satisfied with the end result and that includes receiving the product and not only receiving it but receiving it in the condition it was sold.
  22. I didn't know they had a shop. What do they sell?
  23. Perosnally, I'd be contacting a specialist and asking their advice on a local Vet who they can work with to help you. Here are specialists in both Melb and Sydney who might be able to assist; http://sydney.edu.au/vetscience/veterinary_services/sydney/staff/dermatology.shtml http://www.melbvet.com.au/OUR-SERVICES/Services-At-MVSC/Dermatology-Services.asp
