Wrap a gauze swap around it and bandage it. Elastoplast would be good but coban would be better.

Dry Eye (now With Pictures - See Last Post)
~Anne~ replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Dry eyes :D Seriously though you can usually tell by them having 'mucky' eyes. Because there isn't enough mucous coating the eyes the dirt and rubbish is not washed away when they blink. The can also easily become infected. Edited to add - the will develop a brwon film over the eys as well. It usually starts at the corners on the white part of the eye. -

Ultrasound? Reconstructive surgery? For dry eye? Huh???? If it is just dry eye then you don't need a specialist and you don't need any 'reconstructive' surgery. Am I missing something here? -

westielover, you got in before me and said exactly what I was going to say! In some cases, dry eye is an immune issue, and the cream Optimmune reverses the conditon in some but not all dogs. Pugs also frequently suffer from this. If the condition is not treated they will develop keratitis which is where the eye (all of it including the white area) is covered by a brown pigment. It is like the dog having a brown gauze curtain across their eye. They see some movement and shadows (depending on the severity) and that si all. Their night vision is the worst. As someone above said it would feel like the dog has sand in its eyes all the time and so, even though it is expensive to treat, non-treatment is not an option. -
Be prepared for a bit of a changing road with the tablets. They usually need several adjustments beofre you get them right. Also be prepared that many dogs still have seizures after they have commenced medication. The medication is not a cure but simply a control. He may zonk out for a bit here and there and he may sleep far more soundly. All this will depend on the levels he is taking. If the pheno doesn't work on it's own they may intorduce a second drug called Bromide. This will increase the side effects and also has a set of it's own side effects. It can take up to 3 months beofre the body adapts to the drugs sometimes and this is where you need patience. One of the main problems happens when people see the initial reaction to the drugs (lethargy, depression) and do not ride it out for the 3 months. The body will adjust after a while and a lot of the symptoms will dissappear a great deal, but usually never completely. Some of the symptoms you might notice will be; Increase thirst (and resulting urination) Pacing and restlessness Lethargy and depression Increased appetite Heavier sleeping patterns Weakness in the hind leg area (aka ataxia) Some or all of these may be noticed. It really depends on the levels of drugs he is given. If he is on a low dosage you might not notice anything. Don't hesitate to pm me if I can help in any way.

When To Feed The Bigger Meal
~Anne~ replied to Love my Sonny and Neko's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
They have a dog door so they can go out whenever they please to go to the loo. It is only one that wakes me and it is because of his epilpesy and the medication he is on. -
Phenobarbitol or pheno for short. Also commonly known as Pb. Try these sites; Canine Epilepsy - UK Canine Epilepsy (US site) The one above has a list you can join with memebers from across the world. When To Feed The Bigger Meal
~Anne~ replied to Love my Sonny and Neko's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yeah, tell him that! :p It can be as early as 4 am. He has to be medicated at 5.30am anyway so I usually just get up once it hits 5am. -
When To Feed The Bigger Meal
~Anne~ replied to Love my Sonny and Neko's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I feed the larger meal at night in the vain hope that it will make my epi sleep longer and not wake me up before 5am.... it never works but my brain won't let me not do it that way... where there is hope there is life *yawn* -
That is simply to beautiful for words. :p

I worm every three months and heartworm monthly. With rescues coming and going I feel I have no choice but to continually worm regularly. If there weren't any rescues I would only worm every 6 months or so.

Is there still such a thing as 'daily' preventatives?? -
Ibs, Atopic Dermatitis And Food Allergies...
~Anne~ replied to tollerjosie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Do a search. There are a few threads here on a food called ziwipeak or something?? I have been told that this was the life saver for one or two others in the same postion as you. -
I give about a heaped dessert spoon daily to my guys (mixed with either water, pet milk and eggs or a combination). I only give the natural low fat as my guys can have weight issues. Never give the flavoured stuff as it is usually filled with sugar.

I fed it once to mine and Monte ended up with diarrohea. It may have been linked to it or it may not have but I decided not to feed it again anyway.

That's great Andy. I am pleased for you.

I am not too sure about the humidity in Brisbane but I would imagine it would be similar to Sydney?? I know the temperatures are usually a couple of degrees higher for many months of the year compared to Sydney (lucky bastards ). Pugs can, and do, survive all different climates. As Mita has said though, being a brachy breed, they have a defective cooling system and so some precautions must be taken. Generally speaking they are not considered to be an 'outside' dog. My dogs have access to our home via a doggy door. They are able to come and go as they please throughout the day while we are at work but this has only been for the last 12 months or so. Before this (the installation of the doggy door), I would keep them indoors in extreme heat conditions and sometimes even with the air con set to remote to come on and off at various points during the day. They can not be walked during hot weather or at times of high humidity. A pug can die of heat related conditions much faster then other breeds.

Thanks, I know of collodial silver and it's properties as there have been a few mentions of it recently here and elsewhere, it was the references to 'generating' your own that I was confused about. Even the terminology is unusual.... As for posting it here or OT... I wouldn't think OT was the correct area truthully

Is it just me.... or are there many people reading this and saying to themselves "'huh?'" Please explain for the dummies like moi.

Poor Hope. Gald to hear she is on the mend though. What a frightening thing for you to go through. I feed raw as opposed to barf. I don't feed bones because my Pugs inhale their food and after umpteen times of rescuing bones caught in their throats I gave up. I now feed only mince, veges, fruit, sardines, yoghurt, eggs, pet millk and kibble (not all together) and I use nylabones (I think that is what they are called) as their teeth cleaner. They love chewing on those for some reason... I don't know what why as all they are is hard plastic thing in the shape of a bone. Each one usually last for around 6 months before I throw them as the look manky.

I don't buy treats for my dogs so no-one gets my custom. ;) I figure my love and good helathy feed they get is enough. But, as they send them to me complimentary I will give them to my guys, and pass them on to people who adopt my Pugs and they can make up their own mind about them being value for money or not.

Thanks for the repsonse guys, I really appreciate it!

I am interested in hearing from people who have tried Royal Canin. The good, bad and the indifferent.

I have recently been approached by a company called Doggybiskies. They have sent me a few sampples and my dogs love their treats!! They are all natural and home made. Peruse their website to check the ingredients they use. http://www.doggybiskies.com.au/
