My personal view - seek the opinion of another Vet. I think the time spent doing this willbe worth it. You don't need the bloodwork (what a crock that one is) and she will not need the fluids unless there are any complications for whatever reason (she has to stay under longer or takes longer to come out of the anesthetic...bleeds heavily etc).

My Baby Has Been Diagnosed With Syringomyeila
~Anne~ replied to JAL's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
JAL, I wish you all the best in your battle against this. She is lucky to have someone like you to care for her in this battle by the sounds of it. Jed, you mention Pugs in the hit list for this condition? Do you know where I can find info on this specifically. I could try google but thought you might have quality info on hand. Thanks. -
Out Of Dog Food, What To Feed For Tonight
~Anne~ replied to MDL's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Perhaps I am just more organised then most ... I never resorted to this either with my children. I just planned ahead... when I use up the last thing and I know I need some for dinner the next day (be it for humans or animals) I purchase more. -
Out Of Dog Food, What To Feed For Tonight
~Anne~ replied to MDL's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When looking at the broader sense of animal care it probably isn't a biggie as you say...unless it hapened on a regular basis I suppose. I know people don't like comparisons between humans and dogs but, to me, I plan ahead so that I have sufficient food for my children and I do the same with my animals. I certainly know when I am getting close to the bottom of the cookie jar so to speak and I will plan to make sure I have something to offer. -
Out Of Dog Food, What To Feed For Tonight

Wow... I'm kind of........... astounded............ that someone would not plan ahead and could 'run out of food' for their pets. :shakehead: -
In this instance, for me, it is a rescue and while I do have her paperwork and know of the breeder I didn't feel inclined to speak with them. I understand also that this particular breeder is sick and no longer breeding. My understanding is that she has been made aware that the dog is in rescue and I am happy to leave it at that. It does however support my stance on the issues in Pug breeding and this is only one example of the many that I have personally been involved with. Thanks Rappie. This is good to know. As I said the other night, I need to have all of the information at ready for this little girl. Knowing that there are cheaper alternatives will help a great help. I will try to give them a call and speak to them.

Thanks. I have spoken with a specialist Vet who owns Pugs himself and has operated on them successfully for BS too. His quote was $2,000. Thanks for this, I appreciate your repsonse. ;)

Looking For A Good Vet In Sydneys Northern Suburbs
~Anne~ replied to ILuvAmstaffs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think this is becuase of the difficulty in finding a lab that does titre testing. Previously, the bloods had to be sent to the US but I am lead to believe that a lab in WA now does it? I think Sidoney has it doen with her dogs. PM her perhaps to check. -
Thanks Gillbear. This one involves nostrils, saccules and palate done.

Has anyone any surgery related experiences with dogs suffering from brachy syndrome? Costs in particular. Thanks.

OMG, those expensive ones look fabulous!! But the price! I have a similar problem with my Pug who drags his front feet. His knuckles over so much that he has worn a patch on the top of his toe that bleeds. When we walk him we have to walk him on grass as much as possible. He has one nail that is actually sheared off at an angle to almost a point. Most dog boots don't cut it as they are not re-inforced on top which means that they wear within days. The others on that page would be no good for my lad. But $118.00........ I would love them but they are above the budget at the moment.... perhaps a savings plan is in order.

Maybe try a different groomer?
-
Yes, i tis possible the quicks (the red bits) have extended. You can shorten it by gradually clipping the nails shorter. Have a bar of soap handy when you clip and dig her claw into the soap. It will clog it up and stop it from bleeding. Have you tried other methods of shortening them such as a dremmel (electric file) or a manual file (like you would do with your own). Have you tried a professional groomer? They are expereinced at dealing with this kind of thing and may be able to help.

Thanks. :D After he recently suffered with bromide toxicity I am even more cautious about what I give him. His pica though is an issue as he eats the most disgusting things. I have to worm him every 3 months without fail as he eats his faeces and everyone elses and with rescues coming and going.... *sigh* He is disgusting but oh so cute too! I worry about how his gut handles all of the things he eats.

Thanks Rappie!! :D So, with Monte's enzymes slightly elevated we would jsut continue to monitor unless there is a further change. I assume we should test every time we do Pb and Kbr levels? Thank again!
-
Thanks Rappie! So, initially, unless there are abnormal results we just go with the norm bloods taken??
-
I am more worried about the chloride and sodium levels of the products as this interferes with Monte's bromide medication.

Discharge From Desexed Female Boxer
~Anne~ replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'd suggest a return visit to the Vet, maybe stronger anitbiotics and perhaps some exploratory tests? How long ago was she desexed? Could it be from the desexing? -
I tried it successfully... has a taste like green cordial in milk...... but I didn't notice an improvement in anything so I stopped buying and my Oh had the same reaction as you (I am guessing ) Dumb question... but where is Russell Lea? :p
-
Thanks Toohey. Next question - will it interfere with his anti-seizure medications? I think I will seek advice form his Neuro and show her this PDF to see what she says. Thanks again, Anne

It could be pigmentary keratitis. Causes are varied and many but the end result is partial blindness if the cause is not treated. The brown continues to spread acorss the eye and the dog ends up looking through a curtain of 'brown'. This means they still see movement, light and dark but nothing very well. It can be caused by eyelashes that turn in, dry eye and other irritants. This is from the website: http://www.pugman.com/Pug%20Information/Pi...0Keratitits.htm It is common in Pugs. Best bet is to have it looked at next time you see the Vet. Usually the brown is slow growing and may take years before it spreads but if you grab it early you can resolve it easier.

Puppy With A Severe Case Of Epilepsy :(
~Anne~ replied to puppiesmum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Fair enough but in my honest opinion you should discount the results then. It was a pointless exercise and a waste of time and your Vet is doing the wrong thing by judging his levels of medication and his seizure control on the results. *shrugs* -
Puppy Bleeding From Anal Passage
~Anne~ replied to doggie_lover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Bright red blood that is light in colour can also mean that it is from an atery and is more oxygenated then blood in a vein and therefore it would be more dangerous if it was light. -
Rappie and others, can you give dogs yakult and is there any benefit in this? My epileptic suffers from pica. Very recently I watched a video of a probe going into his osephagus and stomach. It was filled with muck and various things, primarily because he eats his feaces... and everyone elses plus rocks and twigs and whatever he can find. Would he benefit from microbiotic therapy at all or would it be a waste? Can you give this to dogs?
