  5. im on a fence with cesar. some of his methods are fantastic and have worked wonders. others seem a little TOO aggressive towards the dog.
  6. i have found quite a few people describe spider - my border x husky - as "scary looking" it intrigues me what people deem as "scary" lol
  7. while i do have a wariness of GSD's its pretty limited to unknown adult dogs. once i get to know dogs i love the personality of GSD's. i definitely would not be freaking out at one being outside a cafe! thats outrageous! it is essentially - i would be more wary of an unaccompanied or offlead GSD than i would most other breeds. but like anything - its all to do with who owns them. and unfortunately the run ins i had as a child - the dogs were owned by complete *censored* i knew a beautiful shep in WA by the name of Zarek that went to the whiteman dog park. he was MASSIVE but after meeting him once i wasn't afraid of him at all.. for me i think it is all down to the vibe i get from the individual dog. i do think it is very sad that because the dog is larger is generates more fear... when a jack russel i used to live with could cause more damage than most large breed dogs i have ever known!
  8. knob... your "vicious dog" is stunning btw as is your daughter
  9. thanks guys - do you think she'll learn to leave his food bowl alone or should i just keep up with one on the deck the other shut out of it? problem with bones pigs ears etc is spider tends to not want them straight away.. he buries them.. lets them get gross and then digs them up later, thanks ill check out that book jigsaw :D
  10. my boy spider used to pee on people in the dog park... he only did it for a few months when we first started letting him offlead... he hasn't done it in 2 years since. but then again he doesn't often get offlead cause his recall is horrible. in that case i think it was territory/dominance. good luck remedying it.
  11. since getting the new pup luna, our 4 year old boy spider has been quite possessive - of food mainly but occasionally toys. any tips? i have begun to feed them separately. which is fine and i can do easily but the unfortunate part is noone gets bones etc because if they get buried and dug up while im out i worry what could happen if im not there to intervene. spider is my first dog. making luna my second. so im quite new to all things dog related. he is fine with her at all other times. apart from the occasional warning growl when she is pulling his ears tail fur lips face etc and he is in sleep mode. ideas?
  12. we just got a second dog. spider is roughy 4(rescue dog. we made his birth day august 1 tho could be a little older) and our new pup is 6-8 months. she annoys him at times and i think if we had left it longer and spider older i don't think it would have worked. i think 3 years is the biggest age gap i would leave so there isn't too much of a "generation"gap going on.
  13. i am wary of gsd's too after a few nasty run ins as a child - that being said i used to know a gorgeous giant gsd back in perth who was amazing. and also.. im wary of jack russels lol. so it can go anyway really personal experience goes along way to being wary of a breed. im sure there is a different person wary of each breed known to man through personal experience. lol.
  14. thanks we'll be joining the obedience club soon. our new pup luna has a fear of the unknown so we want to socialise her as much as possible
  15. hey all. im new to the latrobe valley area and was wondering if anyone can help me out with dog parks/ walking trails and national parks etc where i will be able to take my two amazing pooches. cheers for any info you can provide me with
  16. i agree. i see alot of idiots in my area roaming with dogs off lead near busy streets. and then there is the idiots how let aggressive dogs offlead in public. if your dog is gonna be agro keep it on a lead. and if you're gonna be agro stay muzzled! i saw a guy at bayswater dog park who's dog got into a fight with a beautiful collie. from what i saw the collie actually started it owner of collie went mental at owner of staffie. owner of staffie ripped his dog off the collie and litterally kicked the poor dog about 10m up the hill. just kinda drop kicked it. Horrible, had me shaking and wanting to either steal his dog or punch him out but i had spider with me at the time so his safety came first. people like that just??? why would you own a dog if you're just going to beat it to a pulp.
  17. fair enough. ive been going for the past month and have only seen one fight happen. a couple of huskies decided to team up on a poor little dog but the owner took them straight home as per the rules. its great for spider as he can have a run around and play with other dogs without me stressing he'll run off.
  18. just wondering how many WA'ers on here frequent the whiteman park dog area?? im down there a few times a week so it would be great to chat with some dog obsessed people while im there
  19. thanks for all your comments on spider. he certainly has a lovely temperament to match his face altho he has some serious sibe independance. lol.
  20. thanks guys will check out midland. i tried the eden hill club as it would be awesome for me. its a 5 minute walk. but unfortunately their obedience is done on a thursday night when i work
  21. theres pics in my sig now was just getting that set up
  22. hi there everyone. im new to the forums here and just thought id introduce myself. as you all are im a west aussie living in eden hill. i have one gorgeous dog at the moment, spider who is a border x husky x possibly blue heeler but is mostly collie. he's a shelter boy who came to me from mandurah. i joined up here in hopes of finding like minded dog lovers as well as perhaps some tips on training my boy. he's 2.5 years at the moment and i got him when he was around 1 from the shelter. The volunteers there have no idea of his history just that they picked him up from the pound. he seems to have been abused in the past as when he came to me he was frightened of water, cigarettes, men, loud noises or arguing, shovels and being touched on his tail/back of legs. he's come along way since i got him but obedience outside of my back yard seems to evade him. even with treats the dogs waaaaay over the other side of the park are more interesting. so at the moment the only place he comes offlead is whiteman park. so yes thats us in a nutshell. ;)
