Just want to say...I am loving reading this thread, I find this very very interesting. Good topic

Yeah, dont forget to look on Ebay! They are less than half the price you would pay in the shops!

Thank you very much for your responses . There is definatley alot of good information here on raising a puppy that can be calm and knows what times are appropiate for games and excitment and what times are for calm times. Oh and Poodlefan.....both my boys love the Scary Monster game aswel, and come to think of it, I have alot of fun playing it too!

Hi! I really think they do! Sometimes our dogs will just stare at a certain spot and then suddenly move their gaze to another spot as if they are watching something. Kinda spooky...lol.

Thanks for that persephone, very helpful

I agree with Ceasar Millan's training techniques as they have helped my dogs 100%. Before we found Ceasar I was almost in tears everyday as I couldnt walk my dog without him choking himself to death at every single dog we passed. We even came to the situation where he would bite us to get to another dog as he was insuch a rage (he is a small dog - but still a horrible experience). We tried the 'positive' training techniques but to no avail. So we tried Ceasar. After a year of living by Cesars rules we can now take our boy the the dog beach, he can walk so well (I actually look forwards to our walks) and his desire to please has increased dramatically. Even just his tip on placing the check chain higher up the dogs neck and only doing very gentle checks whilst holding the leash lightly helped us so much as we had no idea this would make a difference to the chain being on the base of their neck/on the top of the shoulders. I completely understand that Ceasars training methods have their place, but used in the right situation they are excellent. Just my experience and opinion

Hi all I know that this probably depends alot on the individual puppies, but I have noticed that some puppies are very calm and others are very boisterous (spelling?). So is there a way to make your puppy a calm puppy? I would think by not encouraging hyper behaviour and only rewarding calm behaviour it would help in creating a calm puppy? But what else can you do, share your secrets! Oh and I do realise that all puppies are of course puppies and are at most times full of energy and a handful. I was just wanting to know how you can encourage calm behaviour. Thanks :D

InspectorRex, can you please tell me what Ivermectin Sensitive breeds are? I have no idea, lol

DogNerd, I totally understand where you are coming from with the risky-ness of the product being an internal medicine. Before we used it we wieghed up the pros and cons and asked our vet about it, and because our dogs are healthy we decided to use it as they suffer terribly from fleas and the itching is never ending with out this product. I have however heard that someone used this product on their dog that had epilepsy and it caused an attack, or so they think. So yeah, defs have to be careful and weigh up the pros and cons and just hope that you arnt the unlucky one who's dog has a reaction to the product i guess?

Hi Just a random question for the night.... I love to research dog breeds and have latley been researching the bernese mountain dog. A lot of the information I have read says that the Berners dont cope with the heat at all and if you live in a warm environment dont even think about getting a Berner...so is this true? Or could they adapt to a warmer climate? Also because they are a 'rarer' breed, does this mean that they would cost more to buy than a more common breed of dog? This is all just out of intrest Thanks!

Wow, thanks for that Mim! I will definaltey get mine from there from now on, a great saving Yep my boys always get their tablet with food, but I think they would eat it by itself cos they tend to love the taste of heartworming and flavoured tablets in general
-
It is quite expensive at $70, but the one box lasts for 6 months (as it has 6 tablets inside), so it ends up being about $12 a month which is alright i think? The box I buy is only for dogs 4.6 to 9kgs so for heavier dogs it may be more expensive? Im not sure if they have it for cats or not sorry, although im thinking it may just be for dogs? And its only for the "prevention and control of flea infestations on dogs and for the control of flea alergy dermititis" So it just gets the fleas
-
Yep it is an oral treatment, just one tablet once a month

Hi All Just thought that I should let other DOLers know how much success I have had with the new flea treatment 'comfortis'. I have tried all the spot ons available and all the flea rinses, flea bombed the house etc and still had a major flea problem at my house. The dogs were crazy itchy and we were at our wits end at what to do. So we finally found comfortis and decided to give it a go. Well it is my new best friend . Since the weather has gotten warmer have only found one flea and it was dead! The dogs are sooo happy to not be sooo itchy, this is the first time in about two years that the dogs have been completely flea free . The product does actually have some risks invollved cos its the first year out and some dogs have had bad reactions to it, but our dogs have been fine on it. Just thought I would share this with you all

Where I live none of the dog parks are fenced, which I thought was the norm untill I came onto this forum and found out that some dog parks are actually fenced in! What a brilliant idea! Now I just have to wait untill the councill catches up and puts some fences up! lol. Sorry, not much help from me, hope someone else can help you

I find it very annoying when someone comes up to me and my two dogs, that are dog aggressive if approached and sniffed (fine if just walking past or anything, just face to face contact), dont ask if my dogs are friendly or not and just let their dog barge up to mine, often off leash, and I say "Sorry my dogs do not like other dogs and will bite your dog if you come any closer".....and the most often response is: "Oh its alright, it will teach my dog a lesson, he is too friendly anyway"....OMG! Too friendly, I didnt know you could get a dog that was too friendly! Also, most of these dogs are bigger than mine and I dont want my dogs to start something and the bigger dogs to finish it after I specifically said that they are not friendly! I am very appreciative of people who take the time to stop and ask if my dogs are friendly, and when I say no, they just smile and accept it.

I was waiting for this thread to come up cos I knew there must be other DOLers out there that are soo angry at this show right now! Ahhhhhh! That stupid lady...she had a beautiful puppy right there in front of her, that she was not going to adopt if he/she had APBT in him/her because that automatically means that the puppy would attack her children! OMG! But at least the puppy and the lamb were cute...

its ok, I also have dogs that arnt dogs. I just gave them each a pigs trotter, and one walked around for 20 minutes in his mouth crying untill he hid it in a very obvious hiding spot (in a corner, in plain sight), and the other played around his by jumping on it and barking at it...both pigs trotters are still unchewed....lol. Maybe our dogs are related, lol.

I definatley think that desexing a male rabbit is worth the money spent. We desexed my male rabbit years ago and a wonderful decision that was. No more spraying urine on us when he ran past us and it turned him into a big, lazy, cuddly teddy bear
-
Hi A friend just got their male rabbit desexed, and they contacted the animal welfare league nsw, and they assisted in paying for the operation

juice wonderful photos of your beautiful boy, and lovely fosters too Thats interesting to know that he is great with other dogs. julzjc, I thought it was male, but I might be wrong ? If so I wonder if socilization would help sort the same sex agression between both sexes same sex aggression?
-
Thanks so much for the responses, its so interesting to get owners persectives on things . I have never met a goldie or labbie that wasnt just wonderful, they are all so happy and lovely, but I can now see the differences with each breed as you have all pointed out
-
Hi again , After having such great responses to the labbies and Goldies thread (I have always wanted to know the differences, and now I do, yay ), I wanted to start another thread about two other breeds that are completely different but I keep reading the same thing about them. In both the Dalmation and Bullmastiff I have read that the males of each breed, in gerneral do not get along with other dogs of the same sex very well. So is this true? Would socilization make a difference to this? I have met a beautiful dalmation who loved all other dogs, so was he just an exception to the rule? Thanks!
