  1. Normal show outfit here in the light rain... bugger showing a Chinese Crested in anything other than a light shower, he would shiver and vibrate his way out the ring.
  2. I get some strange looks going to the supermarket after a dog show. Nice dressy suit covered in chalk and various dog related brooches and jewellery on me, sneakers usually covered in mud to complete the look
  3. I think most breeders prefer phone calls, e-mail is just too impersonal. Co-ownership is not as daunting as it sounds if you have the right conditions. My boy is co-owned and before I purchased him the breeder assured me that he is 100% mine, she just wants him to be restricted at stud, meaning he can only be bred to dogs that she approves of. When a dog is co-owned, any litters must be signed off by both owners before they can be registered. I had no problem with this at all, after all I was new to the breed and this was my first show dog, my intentions were good but the breeder had no way of knowing this for sure. Now that I have had him almost 2 years and proven myself to the breeder my next dog will be on less of a restriction.
  4. None in Launnie anymore, used to be at the Italian Club in Prospect years ago. Only one now is at the show grounds in Glenorchy. Would love it if they started it up north again, even just in the warmer months.
  5. I would try using something that bends back towards the neighbors yard if they will allow it. I have seen it used for cats so they can't get out of the yard. This is to only picture I could find, you could make it look much nicer than this one:
  6. Yes really. Babies don't need powder, spray or any product. They need to be trained to stand still and enjoy being groomed, they need to get used to their feet and ears being trimmed. They don't need product through their coat though. And I take my grooming tips from the top Aussie breeders in the state. There are plenty of ways to get a puppy used to being chalked without using chalk. Rub thier leg gently, back comb the hair on their paws. Use a water spray bottle sparingly on them to get used to the sound, but puppy fur and skin don't need anything extra. This is what I did with my Crested pup, I never chalked his feet when he was a baby, he didn't need it frankly. As a pup his hair was pretty wild and stuck straight out (as pups do), as it grew and started draping that's when I started using products just to give it a bit of "oomph". Before that I had to still brush and comb his feet so he was getting used to having them touched anyway. Everything else was done as an adults would be.
  7. If you want a snazzy site Wix has a free flash page with builder. It's literally just drag and drop. Here's the main page: Wix free flash pages And my site as a demo: Pet Portraits
  8. I seemed to do the opposite, I had black and white Poodles so when we renovated the house I did a black and white color scheme, didn't realize until afterwards that the dogs blended in a little too well
  9. I use Triocil it's for bacterial and fungal infections plus it's an antiseptic, stops the itching. I have bad eczema on my hands, since I started washing the dogs in the stuff it's cleared them up too
  10. Indeed, as far as I know there is no obligation to have any details on the chip... you just have to have the chip in the dog. When I first registered my mob when we moved they only asked for the chip number, no mention of what name or address it was registered under. Hardy's, do you know why racing greys are exempt? Just seems odd to me, would it be because they change hands often?
  11. I like Sashes, get enough of them and you can sew together a nice quilt cover :D I have been bitter about rosettes ever since I was in junior handlers. I was the first person in Tassie to win handlers after they phased out the gold medals and replaced them with rosettes Hey, to a 10 year old it's big news alright
  12. Depends what sort of prices you are looking at... E-bay is great, even though you can't try them on they will have measurements. Or if you are a thrifty person second hand stores like the Salvos will often have brand new jackets with tags still on them for under $20. I have picked up a couple of nice jackets from Rockmans and the Myer Miss Shop. There are also quite a few traveling suits shops that go around dog shows, you can order online as well, I know several have Facebook pages.
  13. Interesting, I never knew Greys were exempt. I had my boy chipped a few months ago, filled out all the paperwork at the vets office. Got the papers back and it says his name is "unknown", DOH! Got a little tag for his collar too with his number on it.
  14. Chinese Crested Dogs become 'Cresties', although I tend to use "Baldies" more often when referring to my own.
  15. I have found the opposite, but I have Miniatures, my black is very laid back, even lazy, while my white is an endless supply of energy. The black is as smart as a whip and the white... well... at least he's pretty
  16. This post actually brings up a good point... What if you knew a certain color would not win as much in the show ring? I know if I were after a show quality GR I would avoid pale colors where possible. Same as Shih Tzus, solid colors do not do as well as their parti-colored counterparts.
  17. I'm going to start selling them at shows... heck I might start paying some people to wear them.
  18. Cresteds come in any color or combination of colors so there's really no limit to the possibilities and of course, I have my preferences. I am not a big fan of the paler colored dogs, the ginger ninjas as I call them, but in saying that, if a gorgeous one was offered to me I wouldn't say no. If I had 2 identical dogs, one ginger, one slate and white, I'll take the slate and white please!
  19. Same as with us, the darker the skin, the better the tan! My Crested boys whole body goes dove grey over winter but in summer he is a very dark slate.
  20. To be honest, I did read it the same as jacqui at first.. No-one expects sunshine and lollypops there's nothing wrong with being upfront, but you have to remember, not everyone knows about dogs and breeding like many of us here. I agree that color is the last thing to think about at the moment, conformation and health should be first but it is a genuine question, some breeds obviously have colors than can not or should not be mixed. You could find a fantastic bitch but she may not be a compatible color. To find a mentor all you really need to do is start talking to breeders. Attending local dog shows is a great way to start, find some in your area and just start chatting to exhibitors. That's how I started out, I knew not a great deal about my breed when I began and the other exhibitors/breeders really helped me out. The more friends in your breed you have the more help you can get.
  21. My white poodle gets snow nose every winter, it will go brown then darken up again as soon as summer starts.
  22. But if they are just sighting on join up that really doesn't achieve anything other than stopping repeat offenders joining. What about first time offenders? What's to stop someone stealing/forging my membership card and using it at the office? If no information and no photos are kept how do they know it's not me? I don't know what the DV cards are like but the Tassie ones are cruddy cardboard cutouts, easy to copy. The only way I can see it working properly is by having new membership cards issues with photos on them. Yes it would be an extra cost, but I know I would be willing to pay a small fee for a photo ID. I still think it's a good idea in theory, but there are quite a few kinks that need ironing out.
  23. At least it is optional, I missed that part sorry. People are still complaining about it because you will never get the entire community agreeing on any one topic. Some people love it, some hate it, you will get the same thing if you asked "should the forum be blue or pink?". I know politics is a taboo subject here so I will just say it will make it a lot easier for people to promote their dogs (or other peoples) and make them stick in peoples memory... for the right or wrong reasons. Dogs should be judged on the day, not on Facebook.
  24. Would be easier just to keep copies of ID on computers, would save a lot of time just typing in a name rather than thumbing through pages of photocopies.
