Nice to see you included our opinion in the poll Sway.

Reply deleted by me. No point in arguing... again.

LOL typical mainlander answer. If every single National for every single breed was held in Tasmania the tables would be turned and it would be you who would be bitching about it

Technically I have a coupe... 2 seater convertible, definitely NOT practical in the slightest. My OH has a hatchback which is slightly more bearable but still a PITA! Can't wait to upgrade to something bigger rather than trying to transport crates and dogs on the back seat! I have to rely on my parents to cart the gazebo and trolley to shows

All good, I was tired and grumpy when I wrote that. Sorry. I wish there were more shows here, I always see *shelties and danes* wins on Facebook and get jealous LOL Hi Shelly!!!! Yes I wonder who my mum is hehe

Can you find the APBT? Find the Pit Bull

I voted 'other' I would type out my reasons but they pretty much coincide with everything furballs has said above. It wouldn't solve the problem anyway. It's the same as BSL... ban the breed and you will just get black market dogs. Make spay/neuter a legal requirement and you will just get people hiding dogs in their basements pumping puppies out of them. And there will still be irresponsible people who will buy them. It won't solve anything.

and who's fault is that ? you can't blame the rest of the country because you don't have enough shows ...... anyway ... back to the original topic re National shows ..... this one in particular was for GSD's .... doesn't Tassie have a GSD Club? Are they part of the National Breed Council? and its the National Breed Council that determines that show & date .... WOW, no need to be hostile, was just a comment.

Sorry these aren't very clear, were taken on my old camera which to be honest.... was useless The first 2 look like posed ones but they aren't... just random snaps.

I thought Ceasar was already well known to be anti-bsl? Good idea though. What about some more local dog celebs like Harry Cooper or Chris Brown?

Cheers Sway. Unfortunately NSW does fall inside the radius, happened a few weeks ago with a Dally specialty being held in Sydney. None of this has happened to me, I have just seen a few people get a bit upset when finding out the day of the show they couldn't get points. I can see this is just going to keep going around in circles. Obviously some of us have one opinion and others have an opposing one, nothing will change that. I'm not going to go writing letters to the TCA, it doesn't bother me that much, but in my opinion it would be nice if the rules were changed back to State lines.

What about the Tassie Dane people? Do they have to deal with showing flat dogs because they have spent 12 hours on a boat then a long car ride to the showgrounds? My mum has a Great Dane, she has had them for 20 years... they would have loved to have gone to the royals on the mainland or a specialty show but the logistics of it just proved impossible.
-
Just skimmed through the April - May Gazette. There are 2 shows in there. Yep once you take out breed shows and all the obedience and agility there are only 2 champ shows. I'll take every opportunity I can get to show my dog locally thanks, that's the point. If there was a Breed show on the mainland somewhere in those 2 months that would mean we only get 1 show! I know this sounds like just whinging and moaning but I think we do have a point, even if not everyone sees or agrees with it, it doesn't make it any less valid. And everyone keeps bringing up WA and Darwin... they would fall outside the km radius wouldn't they?
-
Sway, I think you might change your mind if you actually lived here And that is your choice to go to NSW, as I stated before, not all of us have enough money to be able to travel that far for shows. The only time I will be going to the mainland is for Melb Royal maybe... and that is only because I owe it to my breeder to do so. Yes Vic has tolls, which are costly, but still not as costly as a plane or boat, plus if we fly over there, we still have to pay the tolls as well depending on where the show is in relation to the airport! I don't think the discussion has taken a turn at all... the cost of getting yourself and a dog(s) out of Tassie plays a huge part in the original point.
-
There was a petition going around at one of the recent dog shows to make dog trailers cheaper on the Spirit of Tas. I believe they were charged as an extra car maybe? (sorry sketchy on the details, but people are being charged a lot for them) If they were charged as a regular trailer it would be a lot cheaper (and fairer as they don't take up any more room than a regular trailer)

That makes more sense, thanks. I think I misunderstood you before. Even though I still disagree with some parts, but hey, that's what makes life interesting. There aren't that many shows in Tassie as it is, I mean in Vic you may have 6 different shows you can choose from all over the state on one weekend! In Tas we are lucky to just get 1 per weekend. With a Crested in Tas, they can't be shown at a lot of the winter shows so I plan on taking every chance I get to get my boy in the ring! If there is a specialty in Vic that I don't intend on going to and it is a beautiful day here I would be more than a little peeved that I didn't get to show (or be in the running for points anyway) I'm relatively new to showing. My mum has been showing/breeding for 20 years now but I'm only on my first dog. I just remember the poor little guy getting off the plane at 3 months old. He came out wagging his tail but was obviously not happy about the whole experience. Road trips allow for lots of toilet breaks and fresh air :D I don't think we will ever get everyone agreeing on the subject, so I agree that whinging is not the best... I just don't find many threads on DOL that I can voice my opinion on

I don't get it gsdzrul, you are from Tassie right? I thought you would understand how hard it can be sometimes My breeder wanted me to go to the Vic Crested specialty, I'm kind of glad she missed the entry date because I really couldn't afford $300+ in flights plus accomodation. Then you have boarding fees on top of it because I have 2 other dogs. If it had have been Hobart then yes it would be no problem. $60 in petrol and I could drive back the same day. Anyway, I think I have gone a little off track there... State borders only just makes more sense to me.

One GSD female and her owner from Launceston to Melbourne one way was 195.00 and a cheaper air fair coming back its was 178.00. Can only fly Virgin out of Launceston and they have limited flights weekends as the freight section is now Toll and they do not open as aften as they did.Flying out of Hobart is not so hard friends of ours took 3 to Sydney Royal all on the same flight and all three cam back on the same flight. Whoops! Yes my boy did come with Virgin, not Jetstar. Amazing how much you forget in just a few months I tried to find some quotes on transporting Tas to Melb and Darwin to Melb but every site I go to asks you to e-mail them for quotes.

Just proving that my dog had been wormed for hidatus tapeworm was a battle and a half seeing as how the breeder didn't think to include a vet certificate, and what was even more ridiculous I knew for a fact puppies under 6 months were exempt, yet they still argued with me about it We don't have the option of driving... I would be fine with driving 3 hours to a show (we do for Hobart ones) but if I had to fly there... forget it. It stresses the dogs out, it stresses me out and it aint cheap. Don't get me wrong, I do plan on going to shows in Vic once my boy grows up but I personally just find it unfair that we (and people in WA, Darwin etc) get penalized because of where we live. There was a debacle not long ago in Tas because there was a Dally specialty in Sydney and the owner of a Dally here was not told his dog would not get any points. Apparently Sydney falls JUST inside the km radius. By the way... not arguing, just saying what I think :D EDIT - Yes from what I have heard there aren't many airlines that allow dogs into Tassie any more. Mine came in on Jetstar, I believe Qantas is no longer an option, at least not to Launceston anyway.
-
I find that comment to be a little unfair. Not all of us have spare cash we can put away to save for a trip to the mainland. My opinion: Tassie should be exempt. Someone mentioned earlier (sorry forgot who) that it would draw entries away from Nationals... HOW exactly? If people want to go to a National they will go... if they don't, they won't, simple as that! Having a local show where they could get points is just more convenient for those of us who aren't rolling in cash

I've had my heart set on a Rav4 for a while now. Would you mind PMing me with where you saw this second hand one and perhaps an idea of the price they wanted? It is probably out of my price range too, but I'd like to know, if you don't mind? What model was it? :D We were looking at a Rav4 but they really don't have a lot of space in the back... at least not the earlier models like we were looking at. Barely enough for a trolley and definitely not enough for the gazebo. From memory someone was selling a Ford Limo for 8k on Dol a while ago.... tempting I think we will just go with a Ford Station Wagon though, much more room than my poor little Mx5

Well done Ellz! My Cyrus is in with the big boys now too He turned 6 months on the 2nd May.
-
I always talk to mine in the ring, it helps keep them focused on you, not the commotion going on outside the ring. You have to be mindful if you are out there with other people not to distract their dogs. That's why I don't use squeekies and only talk in a low voice, I know my boy would go crazy if he heard a squeeky behind him.

What Don't Most People Know About Your Breed?
Shaar replied to RallyValley's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thats a shame Shaar as the true Crested ( from years ago did not need to be shaved) its only because people wanted the flashy cresting that created the need to shave on most of the modern day Cresteds, another way man has interfered to the detriment of the breed! and yes they are like monkey climbers lol I admit, I chose a hairy hairless over a true hairless because I liked the flashy crest and boots. He isn't hairy like a normal dog, the way I explain it to people is he gets about the same amount of hair you get on your legs or arms on his body. When he hasn't been shaved it confuses people because he has that fine down of hair so he mustn't be a 'hairless dog' I give up keeping Cyrus in a puppy pen... if we aren't in the room with him, he's not in the pen! -
What Don't Most People Know About Your Breed?
Shaar replied to RallyValley's topic in General Dog Discussion
That they are more like a monkey/cat hybrid than a dog. They are fantastic climbers. And for the 100+ people that have asked me this question when I walk through town... yes they do need to be shaved.
