  1. There was someone saying ages ago in Tas that they could take a clipping of your dogs coat to send away for testing... Needless to say that was not taken well... there were many threats (jokingly) of broken fingers if anyone tried to take a clipping from their dog! If you have actually seen someone cheating (not just suspecting) then you can contact your local club and notify them. But really, if it's that obvious I'm sure the judge will be able to pick up on it (ie: dog with brown eye rims but a black nose!) Some breed standards state 'no artificial substances in the coat' so that means no chalking or hairspray... these things get overlooked as they are considered the 'norm'
  2. I want to see the it, but am dreading influx of idiots that will now want a Dane because of the "cute one in the movie" Hope you can educate lots of people Sway!
  3. Our trip to the beach wasn't as fun as we had hoped... The amazing curly tongue...
  4. Thanks for that Sway, great site... look like mum needs to update hers from Just Danes to Danes and Poodles, I'll get onto her to send an e-mail
  5. I laugh till I cry every time mum does that... she triple checks these days
  6. No. It's a bit of a downer driving 3 hours to a show only to find out the committee member who picked the judges happens to be best mates with them.
  7. There is a fine line between 'rescued' and 'bought' sometimes. People often think that buying a puppy because it is in a horrible situation with a 'breeder' is saving it... but really, you are just lining the backyard breeders pockets for the next litter. It's a vicious cycle, and I do agree with you that BYBs will always be around. I just think that we should do anything and everything to stop them. I know quite a few people who have bought from pet stores just because the puppy "looked so sad". Yes, that puppy has a new home, a new life, but it just made way for another one to go in the shop window. I hope you get my reasoning, I know not everyone has the same opinion, that's fine. This is just how I feel.
  8. If you followed that line of thinking then I could go sit in the middle of town today spark up a joint, clean my gun, and dance around naked. It's against the law but who cares? I like being naked. It doesn't matter how silly you think the law is, my point is that it is still the law, and it's only the dog that suffers if you don't follow it. When did I say anything about dead ones? I said any one BUYING A NEW puppy or Pit, not people who already own adult ones. If you buy a new puppy from a Backyard Breeder AFTER the bans are put in place then you get no sympathy from me when they take your dog away. Only the DOG will get sympathy for having such an idiotic uncaring owner. This should be all the more reason to fight BSL, not say you are going to ignore it if they put it in place. If that's the case then why bother trying to fight it at all if it doesn't mean anything to you. If Chinese Cresteds were banned (although that seems unlikley) I would have to abide by the law. Yeah sure I would be very p*ssed off about it and kick up a fuss but I would NOT buy another one and put its life at risk. EDIT - Oh, and I know the majority of the people on here are and would always do the right thing... it's just been a general observation over several forums. The same statements keep popping up. Who knows, might even be the same people on each forum.
  9. I'll add a fresh perspective to this. First let me say although this post may not sound like it, I DO NOT support BSL. But, I have heard so many times from a lot of different people that if their breed was banned (completely banned) they would own one anyway (I'm talking about buying a new dog/puppy, not their current dog), they don't care about the LAW. They disregard muzzling laws, or DD tags, or say they would walk their dog on the street even if it were banned, and who benefits from it? The owner for getting to keep their dog? What if you get CAUGHT???? Only the dog will suffer for it by being PTS. Boo-hoo you don't get to own a particular breed when they are banned. Get over it and actually think about the poor dog that is going to suffer because of YOUR stupidity. I have heard of people deliberately registering their dog as another breed with the council ie: Pitt bull registered as a Lab X Boxer or something unbelievable. Now this business with registering your dog as another breed with the ANKC just takes the cake!!! Seriously, take a step back and look at yourselves. I don't like BSL, but I'm thinking I really don't want to support people who lie, cheat and scam... I don't care if you think you are doing it for the dogs... you AREN'T! FIGHT BSL, try and stop it, or try to get bans and restrictions lifted, but don't go being an idiot and destroying your dog by buying one after a ban has been put in place. And certainly don't advertise the fact... have you ever thought that someone lobbying FOR BSL might read something like this? I'm not targeting anyone in particular, more letting off some frustration from about 3 different forums I have heard this same thing on! (except the ridiculous ANKC scam) From reading this I know there are only a few here who would consider it, so all the sensible people please disregard my post. /end of rant
  10. Argh! yes! Buying a new suit and getting to the show and realizing it has no pockets is not fun. Getting to the show and realizing you left the bait at home is second, especially if you are last group on and everyone around you is out of bait.
  11. I like international judges... mainly because of that thing we aren't allowed to talk about here... hint: it starts with p and ends in olitics. If they have a completely different breed type in another country and all the aussie dogs generally look the same then it really doesn't matter... you are all still in the same boat. Cresteds are one that do vary greatly though... especially with grooming believe it or not.
  12. Most breeders sell there dogs on Co-Ownership, Can anyone tell me what this means? Depends on the individual breeder. My boy is co-owned with his breeder and it basically means that he is mine to keep, but the breeder has a say in who he is studded out to. In Tasmania we do not have the option to stop a dog being used at stud when transferring full ownership, and if the dog is co-owned BOTH owners have to sign a stud card if the dog is bred, otherwise you have a litter of unregistered puppies. It's a safety net for breeders. Make sure you understand the full terms of the co-ownership before agreeing to anything as different breeders have different demands. Also I would like to start showing eventually, but I know nothing about it, Can someone explain how I would start out? By joining your states kennel club. What are the main rules for dog showing? Must be a purebred, main registered dog (there are 2 registers, basically show, or pet... you need the 'show' register). Not desexed. As close to breed standard as possible meaning no major disqualifying faults. The breed standard states what faults are disqualifying. how do I enter a dog show? When you join the kennel club, a book will be sent out to you with all the different shows in your area. You fill out an entry form (available from club) and send it to the address detailed in the book. What clothes do you wear when showing? Full dress suit. Others wear more casual clothes, but personally I think a good suit and shirt complete the whole 'package' you are presenting to the judge. (that's the basic explanation anyway)
  13. I have a few dogs but I'll just do the pup... Name: Cyrus Nickname: Cyrus the Vyrus Breed: Chinese Crested Dog Gender: Male Age: 7 months Picture: Where did you get them from? Reputable Breeder How often do you exercise your dog? Daily short walks Do they know any commands? Not really, 'stand' to a degree Compete in any dog sports? Conformation Favourite treat: Kangaroo anything... meat, canned, dry, if it's kangaroo he loves it. Favourite toy: Anything that can be ripped to shreds. Funny habits or quirks: He can climb anything and uses his feet to play. What's their personality like? Part kitten, part monkey, part dog... they are crazy little clowns. Do they get along well with other dogs? Yes, he snuggles up to the poodles for warmth! Are they scared of anything? Cold concrete... he won't go outside of a night because the ground is cold What training methods do you use? Positive reinforcement? Corrections? Positive mostly... with a little correctional.
  14. 17! wow, R.I.P Ellie, I may be biased but you certainly weren't an ugly dog.
  15. Congrats to the winners! Will hopefully see some of you at the Classic, first show in 5 weeks for me
  16. I rarely buy pet specific products anymore. A few days ago I went into Chickenfeed (discount store) and they had single bed quilts for $15. I snapped up one of those for my puppy, it's the perfect size for his crate when folded in half, and then in half again, and REALLY thick and warm!.... A bed like that in a pet store would easily be $60. It pays to shop around and often the "non-pet" version will be a LOT cheaper.
  17. Mine get dry food for breakfast and wet for dinner (4legs balls and Advance dry) I used to feed tinned food only but had a lot of trouble getting weight on my boy... now I've switched he is a little on the 'chunky' side and needs to go on a diet even though he is given less food... shows how little nutritional value a lot of canned food has.
  18. I just don't like the idea of smothering my dog in chemicals on the off chance they might pick up a flea. I've never seen a tick here, and the only time my guys have had fleas was when me moved house and the new place was infested with the little buggers. 2 monthly treatments and a good spray of the house and they haven't returned.
  19. A current Affair... Today Tonight... just the mention of their names usually gets results.
  20. Well said ellz, that's pretty much what I was trying to say! I don't know if I just gave people the wrong impression or they just flat out don't agree with me, but in the end it all comes down to what you want to do. ETA - I would still reply to the one liners - When I said they go in the 'junk' pile' I just meant they were pretty well out of consideration... I wouldn't be that rude that I wouldn't reply at all... I just wouldn't hold out much hope that they knew what they were asking for.
  21. Well, I guess in the future I am going to have trouble selling puppies then... that will have to be something I'll have to deal with when the time comes. That is my choice, everyone here selects buyers differently and if you don't like the way I do it.... don't buy off me
  22. actually, you seem to be the one not getting the point. Why would anyone go to the trouble of researching a breed and investing a whole lot of time and emotional energy into it when they don't even know if they can afford a puppy? Knowing what I know now, the very first thing I would ask when looking for a new dog us the price. And nothing else. Because if I am can't afford the price or am not prepared to pay thatmuch thenwhy on earth would I bother to learn about health testing or anything else specific to the breed. And strange as it may sound, lots of people choose a purebred dog on looks. That, at least is something they can make a decision on quite quickly. Whereas I do not. Nearly every breed of dog is between $1000-$2000. As I said a few pages ago. If the dog is less than $2000 then HOORAY, I get to go on that holiday I have been wanting. If it is more than $2000 then I don't have that much extra to save. Well, call me crazym but I actually did a lot of research before I called any Chinese Crested breeders... and SHOCK HORROR, they were in that price range
  23. Uhhhhh, I think you got my point backwards there greyt I agree with you, the whole burger shop, x factor point I was making was that you shouldn't go behind a breeders back and pimp out the dog to everyone
