Removing Urine Smell From Poodles Rear End
Shaar replied to Shaar's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks dogmad, I was also wondering about the vinegar, I usually soak her bedding in a vinegar solution before I wash it and it smells fine, not sure about how it would go on their skin though? She had been on Propalin for about 6 months and it worked great for a few weeks but just gradually stopped working so I never refilled the prescription. Going to go back soon to see what else the vet recommends. Is Stiboestrel for spay incontinence? -
I have a poodle that does 'frog dog' under the coffee table...

My 3 year old poodle bitch has urinary incontinence. We have yet to find a medication that works and she is urinating in her sleep at least half a dozen times a week. She has had the problem her whole life and we manage it by washing her rear end when she has a big accident and wiping with baby wipes for small accidents, but all of a sudden it has started making her coat REEK of ammonia. She usually drinks water quite a lot which makes her urine very diluted and pale, my theory is that she has been drinking less so her urine has been a more concentrated but that is not the issue... I bathed her earlier in baby shampoo, and by bathed I mean DROWNED in shampoo but the smell is exactly the same. What can I use to get rid of the smell? I have searched on the internet but all I can find in searched is how to remove pet odor from furniture. Any ideas/suggestions/advice welcome on both the smell and the urinary issue. Thankyou.

Faces are hard because whatever you put on will be licked straight off. Everyone was actually talking about whitening products over in the 'Show' section so head there for some good product ideas. Sards wonder soap seems to be the favourite for staining and my suggestion would be to put something like a bitter spray or even a little vicks vapor rub on his paws (hair ONLY, not skin with the vicks) it will deter him from licking them.

Woohoo well done Vicki and Paris :D Any chance of finding out how many Cresteds were entered? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

Staffygirl was just expressing how she feels about the situation... does it really matter? We all have different way of expressing our disgust/anger. It IS cruelty, but it sounds like this guy just didn't have a clue about dogs... poor Tyson

Yeah that's what I was trying to get at in my round about sort of way, white shampoos don't remove stains, but they do make the whites look even whiter. My boy has a small amount of gold in his legs which can sometimes make his legs look dirty, but with the white shampoo it really highlights to color and makes both the white and the gold stand out more.

I remember one a while back where the owner had wrapped wire around the dog muzzle because it wouldn't stop barking. The wire had dug into the dogs skin and it was emaciated and dehydrated. How can people do this? It's sickening.

Don't know about that whippets, My cressies legs are 'paper white' and by using the white on white shampoo they are blinding, regular shampoo still just makes his legs look paper white. The wonder soap is good from what I've heard, mum has used it before but I thought it would be very drying? Probably not as important with a shorter coated breed but with longer coats (or tufts in my case) you want to savor every bit of hair you can edited for typos

Awesome job, thanks Sway! Can't wait for Tuesdays results :D

Chris Christensen White on White here. Fabulous stuff. For staining I use Eye Envy.

Practicing with a dog in a show ring environment is totally different to going out back and doing it. The dogs can tell. I take mine to the big open park for practice and he plays up a treat, yet practice in an empty ring at a show and he's much better. I usually run mine around in the empty ring when show specials is on and have never been asked to get out, although at our shows usually the ring markers are taken away and moved to make the specials ring bigger so the extra space isn't a 'ring' per say.

No matter what they will always do it right when you want to go to bed. I have been up until the wee hours of the morning before because SOMEONE has peed on the bed. Said "someone" also likes to scratch all the blankets back just to make sure he soaks the matress nice and good. Means I don't have to wash bedding, but I have to clean a matress and wait until it dries (usually involves an hour of holding a hairdryer to the bed) If the vomit got on the matress diluted vinegar is good for getting rid of any odors

That was perfect spottychick, I feel the exact same way.

What Is She!? And Whats Wrong With Her Skin?
Shaar replied to Megs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh dear lord, that's just sad wazzat. Don't over wash her. Once a week should be enough, or twice if her skin is not improving. Washing too much can dry out the skin and irritate it more even with medicated shampoos, while they kill the bacteria, they strip oils just like any other shampoo. I use vasaline intensive care moisturiser after bath time, but I wouldn't recommend using a moisturiser until those bumps have cleared up, most of them can sting a little if they get into open cuts or pimples. Once you have tried the antibiotics if she still has some bumps you can use an estringent on her skin instead of washing. I use nutrimetics toner, it's the only one I can use on my own face with zero stinging or burning on open pimples (I have very sensitive skin with acne so I'm the guinea pig) Have read that witch hazel is very good as well but haven't tried it myself. -
Yes.....sad lot aren't they ! What they fail to see is life itself , all animals and this beautiful planet are miracles. Gosh........we're getting deep aren't we I don't know if I would call the big bang a 'miracle' but to each their own I'm not sad by the way. I'm one of those people who doesn't believe in souls in the religiony sort of way, but I do believe there is a part of all living creatures that is something 'special' I don't know how to explain it, I guess it would be the non-religious equivalent to a soul... good and evil.

Vaccinating At 16 Wks ........ Do You Or Dont You?
Shaar replied to Jsk's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks, rules are different everywhere, it's so confusing. Just grabbed my entry booklet, there's a sticker on the front that reads: "It is an ANKC/TCA Inc requirement that all exhibitors certify that their entry has not within the said 3 month period, been in a kennel affected with Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Parvo Virus or any other contagious or infectious disease and that during the last 12 months prior to the date of this show the dog was vaccinated." I only purchased this book about 6 months ago. -

Skin is far too clear/clean in some places to not be a Crested mix. Definitely some sort of short, stocky dog n there though. If it were a hairy dog with a skin problem you would not have smooth patches, the whole body would be covered in bumps and scars and the skin would look scaly, not smooth. Staff infection is certainly a possiblility, it certainly wouldn't hurt to give a course of antibiotics. I wish I had photos of Cyrus's skin when he was going through puppy puberty, it was worse than that and it was only pimples. Found out at one point he was having a nasty reaction to a dog coat of his so I would look at environment as well, cresteds can't tolerate things like wool. -
What Do Puppy Prices Make You Think Of Breeders?

Mum started adding up how much she has spent on dogs over the years... she got halfway through and just said "I don't think I want to know anymore" -

I would have no problem with that, they at least took the time to say a little about themselves first. People asking for price I don't have a problem with but to me there is right and wrong way to do it -

Ahhh the dreaded pimples and scars. Skin looks pretty normal to me, get pup out in the sun to darken up those white spots. I found Triocil to be good for the pimples and use an exfoliator glove once a week until they are gone. -

Shaar replied to my_sibe_owns_me's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't agree with this. I ask about price because I can't afford to spend $3000. There is no point wasting a breeder or my time when I can't afford what they're selling. I love my dogs very much, and while I'm not a perfect owner they are fed a good balance of raw and premium, they are walked twice a day, they are obedience trained and do agility for fun. I am, compared to many owners I see, a good dog owner. My dogs are well behaved and content. I think that when there are set "rules" and people get rejected for asking the "wrong" question to early on then good homes get passed up. I think you need to spend time talking to potential homes and getting to know them, rather than dismissing people early on. Fair enough. I understand. But I have gotten emails that JUST say "how much" and leave it at. That just strikes me as odd. There was a big debate about this a while ago. I got my head chewed off for saying people just asking "how much" got put at the bottom of my list. -
Vaccinating At 16 Wks ........ Do You Or Dont You?
Shaar replied to Jsk's topic in General Dog Discussion
I do C3 at 8, 12 and 16 weeks then a booster at 16 months. Don't dogs being shown have to be vaccinated every year? I know when I went to sign up for agility you had to provide a yearly proof of vaccination. My pets only get done about every 3 years and that's being on the safe side because we do go to the local dog park regularly. -

$800 sounds reasonable for a pet quality dog to me, it's pretty good for some breeds. Like poodlefan said, you have to look into WHY some breeders are charging more, they might have used an import and payed a high stud fee themselves, or imported semen, or their dog just might be *that* good and the price is justified. -
Haha, love the video, especially the bit right at the end Cyrus is similar, he goes crazy if you rub his bum, especially if he still has his coat on and you stick your hand under it (warmed up first of course) He's not very vocal though, sometimes he will make some pretty crazy noises but never for long enough for me to grab the camera
