Breed Spotting At The Million Paws Walk
Shaar replied to cannibalgoldfish's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh darn I forgot about it completely. We should meet up next year if we remember, I did the Launnie one a couple of years ago with a black Mini Poodle. -
My crested gets bathed weekly (or fortnightly depending on how I think his skin looks) and moisturized or else he gets little bumps. My Poodles if they had thier way would never get a bath... but you can't clip a dirty dog so they have no choice... every 6 weeks. One of them actually tends to get flaky skin if she doesn't get bathed by about week 8.

Oh wow, how lovely! People often think breeders just let the dogs together, then 9 weeks later, hooray puppies. It's nice to see you get appreciated for your hard work... and it is that... hard work!

Or you can just buy a Roomba robot vacuum, which is what I did. It vacuums while I am not home and I come home to lovely clean floors every day. Unless you dog goes to the bathroom on the floor. There was a post going around twitter where a mans dog had pooped on the floor and then his Roomba did the rounds... Yep you guessed it... Everywhere.

Jack Russel x Shih Tzu. She's a cutie, glad to see she's been adopted!

The only toy here that hasn't been destroyed and I've had for a few years now was one I picked up from Myer. It is one of those smack and yak kids toys that when you bump them they make a sound. It has survived being left in the rain, being chewed, thrown across the yard and put through the washing machine... it still screams and yells when the dogs throw it around.

What Is Pacing And What Is 'mouth Your Dog'?
Shaar replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
A judge asking you to mouth your own dog is pretty rare though, it's mostly international judges that ask for it. -
It doesn't matter if you are best friends with them, they should be ethical enough to put the right dog up. In saying that though I don't usually enter under friends. If they dump your dog you are going to have hurt feelings, and if they put your dog up, you are the talk of the show.

What a ridiculous statement. Perfect example of someone who knows very little about dogs. One of my Poodles absolutely ADORES children, no I would never leave a child alone with him, but the way he acts around kids is just gorgeous, his whole personality changes and he becomes very playful but gentle.

What Is Pacing And What Is 'mouth Your Dog'?
Shaar replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
The term pacing comes from horses. Also known as harness racing. The horses move much smoother moving the legs on each side at the same time which keeps the sulkie steadier. -
I have been handling since I was 7, I'm 25 now and a couple of weeks back I was told something I was doing wrong that should have been glaringly obvious to me. When I have been stacking dogs, I put my hand under their chin around their neck... I should be holding the side of the lead. Something I should have known, should have been told about, but it took all this time for someone to mention it to me! If you can find someone to give you constructive criticism it helps a lot. It doesn't matter how long you have been showing for,you can always improve and learn new things. Don't go to a show thinking everyone else is perfect and you are the newbie. I go into the ring with confidence, I think that's the main thing for me, make it LOOK like you know what you are doing even if you don't.

Love it, all so true

Thankyou for the replies everyone! I was sent a PM by someone who was interested in coming along to a couple of shows to see what it is all about before getting a show dog. I was thrilled, it always nice to have new people and am really looking forward to meeting up with this lady at a future show. The only times a see the general public at shows is Royals, would be nice to see some spectators or dog enthusiasts at regular shows as well. I agree with Poodlefan, it would be nice if Breeders encouraged people to show as well. If you explain to someone who contacts you for a pup that you have a very nice one that could potentially make a great show dog, odds are they will be interested... they just don't know about shows! More information needs to be given to potential puppy buyers about showing... you never know when you will convert someone. I like the idea of "scruffs" classes, we don't have anything like that here (to my knowledge), sounds like a great idea.

Do You Have Heating Pads For Your Dogs?
Shaar replied to Isabel964's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm the same as Oakway, the dogs do a great job of booting me to the cold patch in the middle of the bed where the electric blanket meets. -
Ooooooooh they look so much better scanned

Continuation from the "surprise judges" thread. A lot of people have no idea about what is involved in dog shows, they think it is all just primping and preening and making dogs look pretty. For example a kid I worked with bought a Husky from a pet store, paid $1200 for her and then came to me and asked when the next dog show was so he could take her along to show her. I know in the US they have breed stalls at many of their shows. How about having the same thing here? Only not just breed information but provide information about what is involved in a dog show, pamphlets about the ANKC and maybe even have some handling classes. It wouldn't cost a lot to set up, I'm sure we could get some businesses involved for cheap printing. Now the next idea (which goes hand in hand with the first) Would the rules permit an event (not a show) which involves unregistered dogs attending at the same time as a Champ show? Or is it registered only no matter what? By allowing unregistered dogs to participate in a workshop that includes handling classes would encourage a lot more people to come along. Everyone loves a dog event where they can bring their own pet... look at the million paws walk. And they have the added bonus of being able to chat to all the breeders at the Champ show on the day and learn about shows and hopefully have some fun. Good ideas or catastrophic? Do you have any other ideas? Would it be allowed? Or do I need a slap up the head for not knowing the rules? My other idea was free KC membership for the first year but I don't think that would go down too well ;)

No way! I have my black list of judges. For various reasons, from their attitude towards the dogs and handlers to sitting ringside during specials making snide comments about the dogs (yes, I know I should have reported this, too late now). If I turned up to one of these surprise shows and one of those judges was there I would go home.

I think everyone is missing the point in that ALL of these puppies have already been SOLD..... as PETS. No need to have them on main register. If people are interested in showing or breeding then BE UPFRONT about it when buying the puppy. I don't think breeders selling puppies on limit register is curbing anyone's interest in showing and breeding at all. Those who want to show and possibly become future breeders will only want a QUALITY puppy which is going to go on main register. To those who think all dogs should be on main register. How would you feel if you bred a puppy you weren't happy with, it just was no good conformation wise. You sell this dog on main register to a Lady in say Queensland. This lady decides when the dog is 12 months old she wants to show it. The dog is poorly groomed, they have had NO mentoring from you because you didn't think they were going to show. Would you want that puppy with YOUR kennel name on it in the ring for everyone to ridicule your breeding? Would you want everyone saying how terrible it is that you never told them how to groom? Of course not! That is why limit register is needed and should be used.

When I moved in with my OH and brought my 2 Poodles with me he was really reluctant to walk them. He saw them as prissy little girls dogs. Now he has lived with them, and got to know their personalities he has no problem taking them for walks. Sometimes people get this image in their head of what a dog is like or they may have had a bad experience with one particular dog and then dislike the breed. Usually once they get to know other dogs they change their mind.

Everyone has artistic talent Bow Wowy, the hard part is finding a style that works for you! Case in point, Kylie, her drawings are amazing, anything I draw in colored pencils comes out completely wrong!
