  1. Play tug and balls outside, he needs to learn to spend time outside Puppy preschool is a must, I was considering not doing it with my pup because it seemed quite expensive for 4 weeks of training, but it was definitely worth it, definitely take him to puppy preschool You cant expect him to recall after 3 days, my 4 month old GR has a good recall for her age, but she doesnt come everytime A well fed puppy doesnt know how to be unhappy, they are built to be happy souls Of course he likes being inside, thats where the people are, he still needs to learn to spend time alone As for hand chewing, put a stop to it now. I had trouble with my GR chewing, so I would say 'ouch' really high pitched to replicate a pup yelping, it soon stopped her chewing me Another thing you should look into is crate training, do a search for it on here and even google, I crate trained my pup and I am so grateful for it
  2. Got a reply, direct deposit is available, Im just waiting on someone to forward the bank details for me
  3. Here is a Golden rescue here in QLD, they constantly update the rescue list, there is only 2 girls available at the moment but you never know if the perfect one might come up, they often have pairs of dogs on here as they are often surrendered because the owner simply cant look after them, usually because they have to move and there is no room for the Goldens http://www.grr.org.au/current.htm
  4. Thanks, I imagine I would be able to pay that way, after all the cheques need to get deposited into an account somewhere lol, Ive emailed them to ask anyway :D
  5. Thank Ill email them PeiPei how do you feel about Royal Canin? I think Ill put my GR on the retriever variety once Im through with her Supercoat
  6. Ditto, I guess Id call my dogs inside/outside, they sleep inside, they spend all day while Im at work outside, but while Im home they have free run of the house and the yard...the majority of the time they are inside with me lol
  7. Does EP send out samples to try?
  8. Nic all puppies go through that for the first few nights, they have been taken away from their mother, their siblings and the environment they knew, best thing I found was that if they arent thirsty, or need to to toilet, then just to let them go for it, like I said its only for the first few nights, they usually settle after that The only problem I see with what you mentioned is that your pup is learning that mum will stay right there all night, you dont want that, you want him to know that when he goes in his crate he will get let out, he just has to be patient. How much time has he spent in his crate? is he just locked in at night time or does he have free access to it all day as well? When I was training my pup to use her crate (first time using a crate but Ive had dogs my whole life) I made a game out of it, she got all of her meals in her crate and after a little while I was locking her in while she ate, but within minutes of her finishing Id let her out, Id throw her teddy in the crate and she would go in and fetch it out. Just remember to keep it a positive place, if he needs time out lock him outside or in a bathroom, his crate should only be used for positive experiences...and Im yet to find a time out that is positive lol
  9. I tried this with a cricket ball this morning...her boof head kept knocking it out
  10. Yeah, and probably much more pleasant near his willie than vodka! Lol, yeah I read until someone suggested eucalyptus oil...OUCH!! After that post I decided to just skip to the bottom lol
  11. There seems to be a lot of LabXKelpies come up in shelters, thats what I noticed when I was looking at shelters for my Golden, but there is always rescues dedicated to a specific breed as well Is the 10yo just shy in general, or shy of dogs? you will need to keep that in mind when picking the breed
  12. I wish, I always wanted a horse lol I was talking to my mum and she had a lot of trouble getting a Cav because they had never had the breed before, chin up it will happen, you just need the right match I dislike the RSPCA for several reasons but one of those is that I went down there with my dog to do a meet and greet with a dog they had, all I wanted to do was see how she would react with the bigger dog, she was an ACD cross and they were being horrible to me because I had never owned a working dog before and Im in Brissy 'so I must have no idea'. I come from a rural community, I only moved to Brissy in October, just because Ive never owned a working dog it doesnt mean that I dont know what their needs are. As it was they wouldnt even let me see her, its not as though I went running in insisting on taking the dog home...I just wanted to see her
  13. Lol, Im having the same problem, I know my Mazda has 2 points on both sides, but I cant remember if they are on the floor of the boot, or if they are on the back of the seats. Im wondering if the ute lead mentioned previously will be long enough to secure my dogs while letting them lay down on the seat...and my car is currently at the panel beaters so I cant just check Anyone have an 09 model Mazda3? lol EDIT Ok I just discovered they are on the back of the seats which is good, if anyone has that model car do they mind measuring from the anchor point to the bottom of the seat (on the seat side) for me? TTIA
  14. Agreed, Im an "85" baby and Ill be letting my (in the distant future) kids out to play in the dirt lol, its good for them
  15. Oh its good to see parents of young kids giving their children the same sort of upbringing I had back in the 80's/early 90's...before kids had all the rights and made all the decisions We had a dog and a cat, we had a sandpit (which was uncovered and we frequently dug up cat poo! lol) we ate mud pies made out of the sand from the sandpit the cat used as a toilet and that didnt kill one of us. We had a huge trampoline without safety mats or a fence around the end...we fell off, and we learned not to try and do back flips off it again...we settled for front flips instead, the unfenced trampoline also didnt kill any of us and any sort of cement is supposed to be used to make chalk drawings or a hopscotch course Some kids these days must get so bored
  16. My aunt isnt a dog person, she told both her daughters from the time they were babies that they cant get a dog because they are scared of animals, so of course these girls spent their whole lives thinking they were scared of dogs. We soon discovered they were only scared of dogs when their mother was around, they loved my mums Cavs because they were gentle dogs and liked getting cuddles. Im now proud to report that (I think thanks to their dad) these girls now have a little Maltese X who they absolutely adore, last time I saw the girls the littlest one proudly told me "Im not scared of dogs anymore" I dont think their mother was very impressed when I took the girls for a pony ride lol, they had never seen a horse in their lives except for on TV I believe all kids should have a dog (with responsible parents anyway) because it teaches them a lot about life Italmum something else to consider about getting an older dog is when the dog passes, Id estimate 12 years for a Cav, if you get a 4yo your baby will only be around 8 when the dog is elderly and nearly at that stage...if you get a pup the baby will be 12 and much more ready to accept death than they would at 8
  17. Id be wary of that, if a dog is around kids from the beginning then they know that these 'little humans' are different to the big ones that feed them, if they have never been around kids they dont know this and might not be as patient when the kids want to give them cuddles (on the floor of course) and brush their hair, a puppy will grow up with the kids and be much more patient with their kiddy antics. By 4 years old a dog has definitely made up their minds on the world and they might be loving with your kids at first, but may not necessarily stay that way. In your situation I wouldnt look at a dog over 1 if it hasnt been around kids, and even then I wouldnt consider it if the dog didnt live with little kids. I cant remember the ages of your kids but I do remember they are all very little, a 4yo mind is very different to a 6yo mind but Im sure you know that
  18. I was at my vet with my pup getting her shots while they were setting up for their puppy class. They blocked off a small corner of their show room for 6 puppies (who were showing up at the time and most were big puppies). I was glad I was only there for shots, Id only been to one puppy class with my agility club at the time, but they had a huge fully fenced area for the dogs to run in at play time, and then we did a lot of on lead clicker work with them too
  19. Yeah all anchor points are standard now, its only on the older cars (2000 and beyond) that might have different ones, Im not sure when they were all put in as standard and were all made the same type of fitting, I guess maybe all carseats were made with a standard clip years ago, so they decided they better make a standard anchor to fit them instead of making people get adaptors Ill have to take a good look at those clips, it will save a lot of suffering when my dogs get tangled, plus my dogs keep stepping on the plug and releasing themselves by accident lol. How long does their postage usually take do you know?
  20. If you can try and get a sample to take into the vets, but make sure anything you collect and store the sample in is sterilised first, otherwise it will be contaminated with god knows what sort of bacteria. They will probably want you to get a sample anyway, so if you can already get it thats the best way. You can get already sterilised containers from chemists and pathology collection centres.
  21. Me too, they are awful. A couple of weeks ago I went into my bedroom and sprayed about 50 flies...so disgusting, I was wondering what was attracting them, looks like its just us QLDers who are getting them really badly. Just wondering if they are in any particular part of Bris, Im at Bracken Ridge/Sandgate area
  22. A big bulldog clip doesnt work? this is what I was looking at doing because Im sick of my dogs getting tangled in the car BDL, thanks I was looking on the website and all I could find was the one that the seatbelt goes through, do they clip onto the standard anchor points on cars easily?
