What Quirky, Cute & Funny Things Does Your Dog Do?
GoldenGirl85 replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
My JRT has a couple of these She would always sit right at our feet when we were playing/training, so we used to say "move back Tess" and push her back with our feet, not meaning much by the words other than to talk to her, one day we were in the loungeroom working on something and someone said "move back" next thing Tess scoots back to the other side of the room, was the cutest thing ever Another one is "let go" we used to always say let go when we were playing tug, even though we could never get her to let go, one day she picked up on it so we thought "bonus, no more fighting for the toy". Except we forgot to tell my sister who didnt live at home, she was playing tug with her and couldnt win and said "oh would you just let go!!!" next thing Tess let go and my sisters arm went flying...man oh man I wish I was there to see that, she was so numb with shock that Tess actually let go when she told her to! -
Lol, I find it funny that everyone here has suggested ways of killing the leeches that wouldnt be considered 'humane' yet every thread Ive looked up about cane toads has a number of people boasting about the humane way of killing them and condemning the people who use the dettol trick on them...dont get me wrong, Im a dettol girl myself, I wont have them hopping around my freezer, infact I wont even touch them, I pick them up with a shovel after they have gone into a nice dettol coma, it just amused me thats all lol

Wishing To Purchase A Westie Or A Cavalier
GoldenGirl85 replied to Abigail's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think you would be better off with the Cav, they really are such a people dog, my mum has 2 of them and they are more than happy sitting on your lap As for the shedding neither of my mums Cavs shed a great deal, most of the hair on the floor was from my JRT, so long as they get brushed a few times a week you will be right As for the Westie, Im not experienced with them at all, but I do have a terrier and they are very independent and can be very hard to train, they can be quite pig headed, where as the Cavs just want to please you -
Where does the lead clip on? you can get harnesses that clip onto the front of the harness (on the dogs chest) the dogs cant pull with these on because it just turns them to the side, there are also harnesses that clip onto the dogs back which actually encourages pulling because all the pressure is on their chest area, not causing them much (if any) discomfort, if you have one that clips onto her back Im guessing the reason she didnt pull was because its new to her, she will work out that she can pull with it on

Do You Feed Your Dogs Morning, Night Or Both.
GoldenGirl85 replied to ~Myschafis~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
I cant really answer either, I have 2 dogs, my JRT gets fed at night only and my GR gets morning and night, Ill be feeding her both times when she is older as well because I figure she would be better off getting two meals than a huge one at night time -
Actually I think its buy 10 get the 11th free, at least up here it is

No - I don't think that you should put a command on anything until the behaviour is correct. If you start with weaves for example weaves will mean everything from put you head in the entry to do 2 weave poles to do all 12 - it becomes a muddy command. If you put the command on it once you have it right then you don't have that muddiness. Cheers. Tony. I dont think I made myself clear lol, we dont put a name to the obstacle until the dog understands what we want, for instance the only commands I use for Tess atm are break, tunnel and table, we are working on poles but there is no command for that yet, we are still on two poles, Im also not using a command for the jumps or the closed tunnel What I meant is that they are encouraging us to use a different command for all the different types of obstacles, for instance we only started the closed tunnel on Monday, but they said if we use 'tunnel' for the open one then we need a different command for the closed one, just as we need a different command for the tyre and jumps, we cant just use "over" for both of those...make sense? -

The Jr is bigger than the SC, its shaped like a doughnut but Id say the biscuit itself would be about twice the size of SC -
Advice / Opinions Please Regarding Rough Play
GoldenGirl85 replied to Nic oh lah's topic in Puppy Chat
Does she know to be gentle? I know when we first introduced my JRT (different I know lol) to my mums Cav puppy we wernt sure how she would react to this tiny baby as she wasnt socialised very much, but when play got a bit rough we would remind her to "be gentle" and she would back off a little but still play -
Switching Labrador Dry Food...

Im changing my GR pup to Royal Canin Labrador Junior, they dont have a GR Jr variety available yet, so far she is doing ok on it, havng noticed any diarrhoea she has been on it since Sunday -
I think those some people are people who just look at a Dane and say "wow big dog...must need a farm for that breed"

Just a little FYI about the Furminator, its great, I love mine, but apparently for thicker coats like Goldens the Mars Coat King works better, at the moment Im using my JRT's furminator on my Golden, but she is only 4 months old and doesnt have the thick long coat yet
-
Im not terribly experienced with any of the breeds on your list, but taking a second look none of them really say 'novice' to me, you have picked a lot of what I call the bully dogs, who can be quite pig headed and difficult to train, I mean there is always the exception, but given that you have already had a dog who was out of your depth I think you should go for a more laid back dog who is still very willing, that is why Im suggesting a Golden

These qualities all say Golden Retriever to me...except for the short hair, but I think their coat would me much more manageable than say...a Husky? But then Im biast towards my favourite breed lol Are you interested in doing obedience or any dog sports with the dog?

So were you guys encouraged to name each obstacle when you were both learning? there is only one dog/handler pair who are in the beginners class, he is rebuilding confidence but the rest of us are complete beginners and they want us to have a separate command for each obstacle, we are separate from the more advanced groups so I dont know if we are allowed to do our own thing later on -

I always loved Fly from Babe -
Ive started my JRT in a beginners course and I want to get my commands in order so there is no confusion, so far we have only started a few obstacles, the main one Im after a command for is the closed tunnel...Im thinking chute? This is what we are already working on Tunnel - Tunnel Table - Table Poles - Yet to add a command but it will be weave Closed Tunnel - No command as yet, only started tonight Jumps - No command as yet We havent started the tyre yet, but we have already been told that if we are using 'tunnel' then dont use 'tyre' because they are too similar, and 'table' is the same, I think Ill use 'through the tyre' so she learns that the word through means jump the tyre So anyway what i want to know is what commands do you guys use for all the obstacles? that way when I get to the more advanced stuff Ill have it all sorted lol

You never know, she may have been having a slumber party! Seriously though, and maybe we're just really awesome but I can assure you when we have patients in hospital/boarding they aren't frantically searching for their owners. Most of them are too busy sussing out the new areas and smells and seem to have an 'out of sight, out of mind' concept when it comes to their owners. That is my guess, the vet checked on her at stupid o'clock, in the morning and didnt latch the crate properly, I know Im damn forgetful at that hour, YES that is a mistake, but it could have been much worse. I doubt she was stressing about you not being there, if its anything like my vet clinic there is loads of new sights and smells, food, toys etc, she could have only been out for an hour or two not all night ETA Glad to see she is ok
