Are Wheatbix Or Porridge Safe For A Dog?
GoldenGirl85 replied to goldee's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Goldee are 'the others' family? parents and siblings? or are they flatmates? Im only asking because it makes a big difference, especially if she is 'your' first puppy, and your parents have trained dogs before I was 16 when I got my JRT, Id read a lot on newer training methods and I wanted to train her myself (my dad was still in the old school "rub the dogs nose in it to teach it") there was also a lot of other behaviours I was trying to avoid in her, such as agression, she isnt an aggressive dog by far, but my dad used to always stir her up and make her 'protect' me, even when I told him to stop he wouldnt listen to me, as a result I now have a snappy dog, she is extremely friendly, but she can be snappy When I got my GR (I live 1500kms from 'home' now) and I was going home for a visit I gave my dad a lot of rules (no stirring her up, no commenting on how skinny she is, she is lean for good reason, no feeding her at the table) just to name a few, and this time he actually obeyed the rules All Im saying Goldee is that if this is your situation, you need to lay down rules NOW while she is still a pup, have one set of commands for her and everyone must use those commands and those commands only, she is going to be yours for the next 12 years or so and you need to make sure she has stability NOW When my GR was that age she was on supercoat and pal (breeder) I soon got her off the pal thanks to a bit of advice on DOL, I slowly put her on pet mince and then sardines and chicken frames (she cant have necks because they go down whole) a while ago I decided to put her on a food formulated for large breed puppies, I want to do agility with her so I want to give her growth the best start possible so she is now on Royal Canin Labrador Jr And no you dont want her to get fat lol, I was a bit worried about Lexi because there is someone else on the GR thread who has a male the same age as Lexi and he was nearly twice as heavy. they soon told me that Im best to keep her lean and grow her slowly, so dont be worried about keeping Ava up with Oscars weight, just keep an eye on her condition and feed her the amounts you feel are right, roly poly puppies are cute, but larger breeds dont need the added stress on their joints -
I think THIS is the link to the canine genius toys. Looks interesting. Depends on the dog, I wouldnt recommend it for a heavy chewer, I bought one for my JRT...it lasted about 40 minutes before she had ripped one of the little triangle bits off on the side. Id like to try her with another one now that she is older but I fear that either a) the same thing will happen again or b) because I have two very food motivated dogs at home (including a Goldie who thinks she has never had enough to eat) there will be so much competition to get it that Tess will destroy it just so Lexi cant have it And buying two wont work, they will both want the same one Archie what do you put in yours? ETA This is quoted from that website for the mini version I wish the guy at the shop had told me that! maybe Ill get the big Leo next time im at petbarn and see how that one goes lol

Doing Zoomies When Being Told Off - What Do I Do?
GoldenGirl85 replied to Snowball's topic in Puppy Chat
She is playing with you, if I was you Id stop saying no and try and get the pipe off her, but if she starts the zoomies before you get a chance to take it off her Id either turn your back on her and ignore her, or go inside and come out again when she is calm and offer her something she can have I hope my goldie doesnt start destroying my yard! although thankfully with this being a rental there isnt much out there for her to get hold of lol -
I have both soft crates and wire ones, I dont know which I prefer but as far as soft crates go mine is great for travelling in a small car, its a Dog Digs one and folds up into itself rather than flat, so you dont need as much space to store it (obviously my dogs dont travel in the crate, they get secured in the back seat and the crates get to live in the boot lol

Anyone Know A Good Place To Get Chicken Frames
GoldenGirl85 replied to GoldenGirl85's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just found the best deal, Leonards at Peninsula Fair (Kippa Ring) sells frames for 30 cents each! I got 10 frames for less than what my butcher would have sold me 2 for their pet mince is a good deal too, only $1.25 a kilo -
She may have been right - but wrong to assure you it wont hurt the dogs. Not ALL the poison is necessarily digested by the mouse when it dies. Eaten is not the same as digested. Poisoned mice etc have been known to kill wildlife, particularly predatory birds. I worked at a produce store many years ago, we often had stray cats move in, unfortunately they would eat the poisoned mice and rats and eventually the cats died. I think but I may be wrong, that the poison built up in the cats bodies eventually killing them. Its not poison that kills them, its an anticoagulant which stops the blood clotting causing internal haemorrhaging, they bleed to death on the inside Its the same stuff used to treat blood clots in people (warfarin is one of the most common) the difference being is that Warfarin is a controlled medication and people taking the medication have regular blood tests to make sure their blood is clotting just the right amount, if their level is too high they are at risk of haemorrhaging and a vitamin K shot might be required, if its too low they run the risk of a clot developing and are at risk of a stroke. Ratsac isnt controlled, there is no way of knowing how much the mouse or rat has ingested, if the mouse had only ingested a small amount it would be enough to kill them eventually, if it was eaten by another animal it may have an effect, but likely the ratsac would wear off and the animals blood would go back to clotting like normal, but if the mouse had gorged on the ratsac and was eaten then there is a much greater chance that it will kill the animal eating it

Not necessarily, any combination of genetics can occur within one or ten litters of pups, two pups who have similar temperaments at a young age who are raised the same way wont necessarily have the same temperament as they grow
-
Ive never had a two dogs with the same parents, but me and my sister and my brothers all have the same parents and were all raised the same way and not one of us are alike, sure we have some similarities, but we are all 4 completely different people with 4 completely different personalities and with 4 completely different views on life...

Anyone Know A Good Place To Get Chicken Frames
GoldenGirl85 replied to GoldenGirl85's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I find it ridiculous that they are charging so much for something they would otherwise toss out, I dont mind paying the same price as what you would pay for mince per kilo, but more than twice the price is stupid, their meat isnt much to gloat over either so if I can find a place where I can get decent meat for myself, and cheap meat for the dogs Ill be happy -

He said about 2-3 frames, I do know of a place in Stafford who sells 4 for $1.50 but its a bit out of the way to get to, I spend a lot of time in Bracken Ridge/Strathpine area and Redcliffe as well Yes Jack Purcell 3 for $1.50 or the IGA at Deagon 5 for $2 Awesome stuff! how do I get to IGA off Telegraph Rd? -
I have to hammer them in with a mallet . haha, I just read that they are metal, Im sure the ones I looked at were plastic, they wouldnt have withstood a hammer lol
-
Tiggy I was going to try those stakes, but they dont seem like they would push into the ground easily, my dirt is quite firm, I ended up getting the cheap wooden ones and basing them in with a hammer but I need to put on gloves to touch them or Ill wind up with splinters all over my hands. Ill have to take a look at Bunnings for the other things and try those

They probably didnt pay rent or something to have the doors locked like that, Still though no reason to lock all the animals in

My local butcher does a pretty good deal on pet mince $1.50 a kilo, but for some reasons they sell frames for $3.50 a kilo, which I think is rediculous, I dont understand why they arent the same price, if anything frames should be cheaper because they dont need to mince them Anywhoo, does anyone know of a place who does a really good deal? Id be looking to get about 5 or 6 a week, and probably buy a few weeks worth at a time

Excellent...erm, what aisle in Bunnings would you find them?

18 Month Old Female Staffordshire Terrier Always Hungry
GoldenGirl85 replied to scolly's topic in General Dog Discussion
My GR pup would eat all day if I let her -
Thanks! We have moved her bed into the crate so hopefully she'll be ok to use it today. I put her breakfast in the crate and she hoped in to eat it - well kind of, half in half out! Nope didn't get anything from the breeder. I will find an old t-shirt or something. Vegemite! I'll have to try that! we've just been doing the 'good girl' thing and it seems to be working. When she does something good or right we make a fuss of her and she goes all happy. I do need to try to stop her nipping and bitting feet and hands. Sooner is better than later when she thinks its ok to do it. Her little teeth are like needles! We haven't had to toilet train her at all. She goes out side when she needs to go. The way I stopped Lexi from nipping me was to 'yelp' whenever she did it, make sure its high pitched just like a sibling would do when they got hurt, in no time at all she had stopped. Lexi also didnt need toilet training, she had a few accidents inside but she was a very easy pup to train

thanks!. I'll have to try to feed her meals in there. she loves the outdoor so is in the garden most of the day and her crate is in side - it pretty big. Right now i have to pick her up and put her in there and when i shut the door she tries to get out and then cries. Its awful to hear. One night it went on for 30 mins and another night it was only about 10 mins. its not bad i guess considering she's only been here 5 days. i dont want it to be a negative thing for her. I dont want her to be scared of it because im putting her in there and shutting the door. we have a big bed for her too (just from cheap as chips) that she lies on inside. Would it help if we put that bed inside the crate and leave the door open on the crate and see if she use it during the day and evening before bed and then switch it back? She doesnt go crazy over treats like these pediegree training treats or small bit of schmackos. so it even hard to try to get her to go in there. if you try with a toy she sees it but is way more interested in biting your hand instead! Oh yes will post some! im still deciding on a name tho!! Yes put the bed in, that will definitely help, also did the breeder give you anything from home for her flight? if they did put that in as well, if they didnt try putting in something that you have worn. Even if she isnt big on treats just yet (wait for it, it will come) try giving her a lick of vegemite or peanut butter or something, my girls love vegemite, either that or just pats is often enough, if you can get her working off not much more than a "good girl" and a nice scratch it will make training much easier, especially if you (like me) dont always carry treats on you

Behaviour Of Staff And Their Dogs At A Pet Store
GoldenGirl85 replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
I recently complained about some staff at my local pet store that doesnt sell pets, the complaint was actually about the store manager, Id taken Lexis crate back because even though it was only a few months old and had only ever been inside it was starting to rust. Firstly the woman gave me hell trying to look up the receipt (I kept it, just wasnt able to find it, but it was purchased using their rewards system) she kept insisting that I must have bought the crate at a different store because my transaction wasnt there, well long story short it was. A few days later I came back with the crate and the receipt, she told me the rep would be in within the next two weeks and he will have to look at it before they can replace it, yeah fine, whatever. 4 weeks later Ive heard nothing, I ring the store and find that the woman is on holidays, they put me through to another guy who gets my story and says "Oh yeah I think thats out the back" I said "Oh nice to know she hasnt done a thing about getting it fixed" he says he will look into it and call me back, I give him my details. Two days later after no phone call I ring again, the guy is away but Im put through to another girl who was lovely, she got my number again and promised to ring me back, within half an hour she had rang me and said to come in and pick up a replacement. This girl received a compliment in my letter, the other two both got complaints. The last girl told me that the rep for that company hadnt been in for months and wasnt expected in the foreseeable future, she also confessed that her boss was full of sh*t Id complain about it, too bad if someone wasnt watching what was going on at that end of the store and the dog did attack someone, or what if someone comes in with an older but still entire pup? thats not on, if she must bring it to work crate it out the back -
Chicken Mince From Leonards Chicken
GoldenGirl85 replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh really? How many in a box approx? My Pointer puppy is a food gulper, but a whole frame would be OK for him? Frames are perfect for my gulper GR, they have to chew it lol He chews it until he can swallow and he swollows some large stuff! Though I gave him a lamb shank today to chew the meat off and he loved it. Didn't try once to down the bone. But the bone was removed from him when the flesh was stripped off. I was amazed that he swallowed a nearly whole chicken wing! Lexi ate chicken necks whole, Ive never been game enough to give her wings for that reason -

This is something Id be interested in if I could bring Tess to it, that way you can be sure you are using the right methods, rather than taking notes then remembering what you were shown
