My parents had one for their Cavs and my JRT, but I wont be getting a Lexi sized one, my parents used to have a locksmith and my dad would often have to change locks on breakins, the main form of entry was a) cat flap or doggy door b) people leaving their doors unlocked while they are home (which is why I always lock my doors regardless of whether or not Im home c) kids were throwing a ball into a backyard and asking the owners to get it, they used this technique to see if the owners were home...because who can resist some little 8yo who wants his ball back. If this ever happens to me I get it the first time, but tell them if it comes over the fence again it will belong to the dogs Doggy doors are ok if you will be home while its unlocked, but dont leave one that size unlocked while you arent home, he is better off staying in the yard

Lexi is becoming very possessive over food, but more so over bones. She has always inhaled her food so I either spread her food or feed her in a 'go slow' bowl to slow her down and I always feed her separately from Tess. She gets chicken frames for dinner and she would inhale those too if they were small enough, thankfully because of the shape of them she actually has to chew those. I make her wait for a release before I let her eat her chicken, and I can hold it in front of her nose and she will 'leave' it so I dont think its a dominance issue, she definitely knows Im boss, infact she is the bottom of the food chain in this household Ive been giving the girls a few brisket bones some mornings, Lexi gobbles them up so fast Im worried she might choke on them, I want to stop this sort of behaviour now before it turns to any sort of agression, Ive tried to remove the bone from her to show her that it is 'mine' but while she has never shown any sort of aggression towards me she only gobbles it faster so I cant take it Does anyone have any suggestions? I have no idea how to stop this and make her realise nobody will steal her food, Ive tried to hold the bone while she chews but she doesnt seem to realise she has to be careful because she nips me, like I said she isnt aggressive at all, she just doesnt realise she is nipping me

Obviously my purebred JRT must be part ridgeback too... lol Wow...that must mean my mums black and tan Cav is pure evil That is because Labs are the perfect dog, and because Goldens are just 'long haired labs' that also makes Goldens the perfect dog, which means you can bring your grotty little 2yo up to pat (or you could call it attack) he when she is obviously on a training session Well they are Cavs after all !!! I have to agree with this. my mums Cavs will eat anything lol...but I can also say the same about my Goldie Sadly my dad still believes this 'theory' Oh you can if you cross it with a black poodle Whoops, someone forgot to tell my 8.5yo JRT this before we enrolled for beginners agility...we are onto intermediate now!! Oh thats right, and if you breed it with a poodle you can sell it to anyone for a lot more money because they dont shed!...but you need to make sure its a purebred poodle, wouldnt want any little crossbreeds now would we? lol

You should be getting him used to having his mouth checked anyway, reward him every time you open his mouth, it will make it easier for the vet to examine him when he is fully grown

Parvo seems to be a pretty constant issue in Griffith, I can only imagine if the council would become more dog friendly and provide a 'usable' dog area and disposal bins in the common walking areas it might encourage people to clean up after their dogs and parvo outbreaks could become few and far between...glad I moved away

GoldenGirl85: That's exactly it! In the sedan version of the Mazda3 - poor Elbie would be on an angle if we got a medium-sized crate and I don't think he'd like that at all. Also - when we bought the car, we didn't have a dog and at that time had no intention of getting a dog Yesterday we tried following the advice of having him sitting in the back on his own - ignoring him - except that even though we tried to make the strap as short as possible - poor Elbie gave a yowl and threw himself down beneath the seat (where you put your feet). I had to go and sit back there with him so that he didn't accidentally strangle himself. We're going to go to Pet Barn today or tomorrow to try to find a harness that will strap him in more securely until he settles. I wish I'd recorded him - he seriously makes monkey sounds sometimes when he's distressed He , he makes monkey sounds and he loves food as though he's a labrador What on earth is he? Another thing you can try is a strap similar to the ute lead that goes from the anchor point and latches to their collar, Ive made some of these for my girls and while it didnt stop Tess pacing, it did stop her from jumping off the seat

Yes, but it doesnt mean it will fit a crate for a medium sized dog, I have the same make of car as Koala but mine is a hatch, mine would fit a crate with the seats folded down but the problem is the seats dont fold down flat, which means the crate wont sit flat, for the sedan model...I really dont think it would work that way the boots are tiny on those things (which is why I got the hatch lol)

Whats The Best Way For Worming, Flea Treatment Etc?
GoldenGirl85 replied to goldee's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
true but it treats fleas which is where they get the tapeworms from. I use Interceptor then just flea treat if I need to with Advantix. I wouldn't use the heartworm injection if I was paid to. Ahh good to know, I always wondered why the other brands didnt cover all worms lol -

Ok, thanks guys, Ill definitely keep an eye on it but its good to know that its probably just pigmentation and not something serious -
Tess is horrible in the car, but I think Ive found a solution, I bought a car harness for her when she was a pup but never really used it, it was one of those ones from BigW with the big D ring to clip to, but it has a loop after the D ring to put the seat belt through, its worked wonders, we have only had a couple of drives with it but its the most peaceful drive Ive ever had with her, when she is hooked into this harness she cant pace from side to side and look out the window which is what stresses her Lexi...well she just curls up and goes to sleep lol, she is such a good girl

It all depends on what you need to treat, Im using monthly interceptor chews for Lexi (although they are safe to give every 6 weeks rather than every 4) as far as I know this is the only heart/intestinal wormer that treats ALL intestinal worms, I think some of the other brands treat all bar one or something odd, the other question is do you need to treat for fleas and or ticks? an alternative to interceptor is sentinal which is the same as interceptor but it includes a flea treatment (and its a lot more $$$ to buy) I need to treat Lexi for ticks in summer but not fleas so I get Advantix and she gets that through the summer months, advantix treats fleas, ticks and has something in there for mozzies too I dont think you will find anyone on here who will recommend the heartworm shot, Tess is still on that but once it wears off Ill be putting her on interceptor too Look around online for this stuff too, its usually much cheaper than it would be at the vets or a petstore (unless they are having a sale) -
Anyone Know What This Is On My Dogs Nose?
GoldenGirl85 replied to GoldenGirl85's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks, good to know its probably nothing, Ill still keep an eye on it anyway, it wouldnt surprise me if she did get some sort of trauma to it...she is always sticking her head in places she shouldnt lol, typical JRT -
I think a pup of that age should be able to hold on for more than 2 hours, not necessarily all day but more than 2 hours, which is why Im suggesting a medical issue Blood in the urine isnt the only symptom of a UTI, it could be painful for him to pass so he doesnt completely empty his bladder, hence the need to relieve himself sooner than he should, you have no way of knowing if he is in no pain when passing urine, unless of course your dog has the ability to tell you that it stings when he pees, but Im guessing he isnt. Id take him to the vet and get him checked out, could be any one of a number of issues with his bladder, its worth getting that checked first

GoldenGirl85 replied to GoldenGirl85's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
She has never had it before, she is an 8yo JRT, can winter nose just develop like that? I thought it would affect them from the time they were young -
If he is marking it will usually only be a little bit, Id take him to the vet and make sure there is nothing physically wrong before you put it down to something behavioural. Can he hold on for more than the 2 hours? if he cant it may well be something physical like a UTI

Are Wheatbix Or Porridge Safe For A Dog?
GoldenGirl85 replied to goldee's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I havnt weighed Lexi for a while but she was about 15kg a month ago when she got desexed, she has also been sick right before that so she gained a couple of kilo fairly quickly, I wanted to feed her up so the vet didnt hate me for starving my dog! lol, I might take Lexi for a drive to the vets to weigh her again tonight or on the weekend, she is getting too big and awkward to do on my scales at home lol Im happy with Royal Canin, Lexis coat has been so much better since taking her off SC, when she was on that it was soooo dry, now she gets RC for brekky every day, then a chicken frame for dinner, once a week Ill give her RC and sardines for dinner, and occasionally I give her an egg with brekky Definitely write out the do's and donts, that way there is no confusion, and that way they wont affect Ava's training for the rest of her life, remember, she is YOUR dog, YOU paid for her, YOU buy everything she needs, so YOU have EVERY say in what she eats and how she is trained because otherwise YOU will have to deal with the consequences as she grows older and you move out
