  1. I crate trained my 8yo chlaustophobic JRT earlier this year, she loves her crate now
  2. I think I made a mistake buying a lead that looks like a tug...Lexi thinks putting her new lead on is a big game lol Photos to come
  3. Problem is nto only this issue but the fact that there are way too many dogs in the hands of too many people who don't bother to and or cannot afford to vaccinate. As the vet once told me "people get given a pup it dies, get another it dies and they keep doing this and then one pup doesn't die so they think see no need to vaccinate" Also they don't care that htey may be walking and carting about a dog that has an infection and spreading the disease. I too am glad I left and now live in a parvo free area and hope to keep it that way! Griffith just isnt a dog area, I have a nearly 9yo JRT who got no socialisation until I moved away because there is no training schools in the area, there is no dog park (well, not in the area that people feel safe going to anyway) there is no bins to use to dispose of your dogs business and heaven forbid you use the wheeley bin that was left on the curb. I agree that too many people who shouldnt have dogs just keep replacing the ones that bite the dust, council needs to implement a permit scheme for multiple dog ownership and offer some sort of encouragement to desex dogs who arent worthy of breeding IMHO, they also need to come down hard on people who have unregistered dogs
  4. how much bigger than a chicken neck is a turkey neck?
  5. I have a similar problem with Tess, what I do is flick the tug at her feet as though its a snake, if that doesnt work repeat and run with the tug dragging on the ground, that usually gets her going
  6. I spoke to a Nutro rep when I was looking at a new kibble for my girls, he recommended Nutro for my itchy JRT, but not for my GR because she is a pup and would be better off with a specialised large breed kibble. On further investigation Nutro does have a large breed kibble, so Im wondering if that rep knows something he isnt supposed to tell
  7. You have done better than me...I couldnt find them anywhere
  8. Ah... . not everyone.. Yes.... not everyone As applies to all breeds! I recommend Shepherd if you are prepared to put in the hard yards in training the puppy right and being firm but calm and consistant. Also need to be prepared to exercise the dog a lot and continue training as the puppy grows, you may end up with a very high energy shepherd! They are incredibly smart and as a result need a lot of stimulation. My mum has a golden, she is VERY different as in she is more laid back, happy to just sit there wagging her tail and just wants a pat. She didn't even really get any solid training and was just a good dog. They are all different though, regardless of breed I meant Joe Blow lol, I can walk my dog and people invite themselves up for a pat and comment on how beautiful she is etc etc, the same friend I mentioned earlier can walk her Rotti pup and people cross the road to avoid her, unfortunately GSD's often fall into the second category, when they are fluffy pups its all good, but once they start go grow up and look more like GSD's then people automatically think the dog will turn on them, Im only saying this because the OP has young children and she may find that certain mums wont let their kids come to play if they have a 'vicious' dog in the yard...obviously those people arent worth knowing in the first place, but Im thinking of the effect on the kids if nobody wants to play... I know that scenario is unlikely, I think GSDs are awesome dogs and like most other people on here believe its more to do with the breeding and training rather than the breed itself
  9. Im saying Goldie...but just like every other Goldie owner Im biast Both of the breeds you are considering are very different, you need to consider what you want to do with the dog as well, would the dog be ok with just a daily walk or are you planning on dog sports? something else to consider, and a lot of people will agree, that 'joe blow' thinks GSD's are vicious, while I know this isnt true of any breed you need to keep this in mind, I know a lady who has a Rotti pup, and she has had people take their SWFs out of the room when she was waiting at the vet with her 4 month old pup, she has also had people tell her that her dog will turn on her children which is a horrible thing to say...Goldies on the other hand...everyone loves them!!!
  10. I only bath my girls when they smell lol
  11. Im looking at getting one of these for Tess, she twists her harness up but this has a swivel so she can turn around as much as she likes and she wont get twisted up, Ill either get one of the BD car harnesses or use her walking harness with it
  12. not necessarily, it could be clotted blood, if his esophagus is bleeding and he is swollowing the blood it will clot in his stomach and make him sick. Besides some people go funny around blood and see more than meets the eye, for instance when I take bloods off people our largest tube only holds 8.5ml, but people think Ive taken gallons off them, they are usually surprised to find its less than 10ml
  13. Has anyone seen the balance harness in any other online stores? so many stock BD products but nobody seems to stock the balance harness, Im just shopping around for price
  14. Id be worried he is scratching his esophagus by eating the wood chips and that is causing the bleeding, Id be going straight to the vet if you havnt already done so
  15. Sorry, I havent been here long enough to need to board anywhere, I kind of hope I never have to. My friend boards her dogs at RSPCA Dakabin
  16. ^^^ What they said Basically you need to make the crate "the" place to go, my girl didnt like her crate at first either, even refusing to go in at night time, but because Im in a rental I wasnt going to leave her loose, she was the first dog I ever crate trained so I wasnt sure if I was going about it right, but anyway one day I decided to take out the divider as she was growing...and ever since that day she has been happy to hop in the crate, the two previous posters have given you some very good suggestions so Id go with what they have posted and see how you go, just remember my girl was 4 months old before she would just walk into her crate at night
  17. Ouch...benefit of the doubt maybe? Kazzie is asking for advice, on a forum which is usually full of good advice this is obviously her first litter, you cant be prepared for EVERYTHING first time out...Im sure all the breeders on here will admit they learn something new with each litter
  18. My JRT is going to be 9 in November, while I dont consider her to be 'senior' status just yet Im still keeping an eye on her to watch out for behavioural changes etc, she is still very active and very 'switched on' so for now Ill still take her to agility training, Im not expecting to get her to a trialling level but just going to weekly training is keeping her active enough for my liking
  19. Smisch how will I know who to look for on Saturday? Ill be the one looking very lost with the JRT and the GR pup lol
  20. I was looking at getting one of these, would they be ok to use on a pup? (pup being 6 month old Lexi) or should I wait until she more grown before using one on her? Can't see a problem there but maybe don't put anything too heavy in the saddle bags for example water - I have two small bottles and put one in each side but my dog is a tall 32kg. It would really just be to carry my keys, phone, a ball and a fold up bowl, plan is to start walking my girls to the agility oval when we are all fit enough, its about an 8km walk, if Lexi can carry that stuff it will save me, there is water at the oval, and she rests while Tess is training ETA Wow, Petitude has this one on special, only $19.95, 50% off retail, even if the bag isnt a 'good' one it will at least let the dog get used to it, saves spending big $$$ on one to find your dog wont tolerate it lol
  21. I guess you will end up with a very dirty and fish smelling backpack Oh, and dont pack anything crushable in it lol
  22. I was looking at getting one of these, would they be ok to use on a pup? (pup being 6 month old Lexi) or should I wait until she more grown before using one on her?
  23. OMG I remember that! we used to have water bottles on our front lawn lol, a lot of people in the area did
  24. I didnt even think of her, Ive seen Jane about pulling issues with my girls, Ill send her an email, thanks! Ok Bub Ill keep that in mind Labsrule its not that I think she will start aggressing, I just want her to realise that there is no need to possess over bones (or any food) the way she does because nobody will steal it, I want to stop this behaviour just encase it does turn to an aggressive behaviour later on down the track, that will only make it harder to fix if it does happen, I just want to nip it in the bud so to speak Pugmum I wish my girls would have that arrangement when it comes to meal times, Tess will happily sit there and munch on a bone all day and just come back to it whenever she feels like it..as for Lexi she seems to have one thing on her mind "DEVOUR!" Its like when you give a kid a box of popcorn at the movies and telling them it has to last the whole movie...yet it doesnt make it past the previews lol
  25. SnT and K9, thanks for the advice, Ill try a different bone next time, I was hoping Id just be able to give them a bone each and they would last more than 5 minutes lol Sas I said she isnt aggressing towards me
