  1. Hello, We would like to take our active 10 month Kelpie on a family beachside holiday. We need: 1) On beachfront or very near 2) Dog lead free beach nearby 3) Prefer larger place for 2 A 2 kids with fenced yard ( and queen bed in main) We were thinking Forster or Pacific Palms area ie Mid north coast NSW, (but Blueys beach only lead free til 8am). Does anyone have any suggestions. Fot Sept/Oct holidays Ta
  2. Hi there, My Kelpie X pup gets red in one eye at the middle corner. The vet said that because of the almond shape of that eye (looks like your bub too) the end bit sometimes collects dirt or sand or whatever, and to clean it with a little warm water on a cotton ball. It's intermittent, so you might notice it again. It also usually rights itself without the clean!
  3. Hey, good on you for rescuing the pup. I have a kelpie X female, gorgeous girl now 10 months. We have been worried about limping, seemed to go from paw to paw, for quite a few months. Went to RSPCA vet, and he said due to poor nutrition in the womb, her joints aren't great. She didn't improve just on the good dry food for puppy's, but after taking JOINT GUARD on her food we saw an improvement after about 4 weeks! Got the advice off DOL. I also limit her time with rough play, not going to her favourite dog park but, she still has fun meeting other dogs along our walks. GOOD LUCK!
  4. Hey, My (now deceased @ 17 yrs) Zac dog did the same thing only TWICE in his 17 years. I beleive he could sense a bad person, or what they were thinking. Once to a man who looked sus, but amazingly, one other time to a teenage girl walking along. astonishing. They have a 6th sense
  5. Hey, I have a beautiful female kelpie X. Had a male before (more smelly!) Good size, fun-loving and VERY friendly. Intelligent, training a treat. Not too long hair. Loyal. Please save a life and search the animal rescues and shelters first!
  6. Hi, CAn anyone direct me to a club or somewhere I can take an (almost) 9 month old Kelpie for dog sports. She is very active and keen to learn. I live East Lake Macquarie, so somewhere Lake MAc/ Newcastle area. I know there is an "all-breeds" club at Hillsborough, but they only take at 12 months. Thanks, ;)

    Harness

We find the "easy walker" front attached harness brilliant. You can get on-line or the RSPCA and some vets have them (about $20), might be best to get one there,,as the staff can fit it properly. Sally (8 months) Kelpie gets very excited when out and about and needs the walker. She walks on a normal lead OK when there isn't any other doggy distractions! She just seems to know its on and doesn't pull! ;)
  8. Point taken. I will heed the advice given here. No Vicks! Better attached front piece to jacket. Sleeps in a room attached to the house (cooler, cement slab), and even tho her bed is raised and has warm sides, doesn't keep the blanket on. I am really amazed the blanket hasn't been chewed! Its cotton, whereas the coat is polar fleece type (weatherbeta), like her sheepskin toys! She seems to really like her coat, and we also put it on when she's travelling in the ute. I think its more of a boredom thing at night, I need to get onto her early in the am before it is chewed! Thanks for the tips everyone
  9. Thanks, Good idea. At 8 months, I am hoping she grows out of it one day! She even chewed the side of the house one day, even tho she had toys!
  10. It is velcroed around the tummy and also across the chest. She loves to find little bits like labels on toys and work on them. Might be too late for the spray I thought someone suggested Vick's rub somewhere on here, is that right?
  11. Decided to get a warm jacket for the cold nights for 8 month old Sally. She has chewed it around the neck, I've sewn it up a few times Not a cheapy. Any ideas on how to prevent this?
  12. Must be different in my area. It's usually the big dogs PULLING that I see!
  13. What kind of pup mince were you feeding? If it was just ground chicken carcus (with the bone included) then apart from perhaps upping her diet to a premium dry as opposed to a cheap one what you were feeding doesn't sound all that bad. Raw meaty bones and pet mince (ground carcus) are actually quite good for dogs, the bone contains calcium and other essential nutrients as does the meat. Get your hands on some of the Ian Billinhurst books if you are interested in learning a bit more about that. If you'd like to odd omega oil to your girls food you can try either flaxseed oil, fish oil (capsules from the chemist) or an omega pet oil (we use the Melrose brand Omega Pet Oil) and just mix it in with her meals ETA, forgot to ask - are you adding any joint supplements to her diet? Such as Joint Guard or Sashas Blend? If not you might like to consider that also. Oh, the pup mince is a meaty one from the Pet Stock fridge. (Kangaroo a main ingredient I think) It is labelled for Puppies. No supplements given (yet!) As only a pup, I thought those Joint Tabs for arthritic dogs?? Any success with those?
  14. Well we were feeding her some cheaper pup dry mixed with pup mince which she eats (because of the meat!) and usually chicken joints and meat bones every other day. When we had the joint prob and went to see the vet, he said she needs the good quality dry 3X day to get the nutrients (plus Omega3). It's just that I struggle to get that much to her (especially mixing it with the pup mince). She hasn't had many raw bones since the vet visit due to the fact that she will eat these and not her dry/meat as well (even if 12 hrs apart). She's pretty smart, I think she hangs out for something tastier! I really raised the Calcium Supp issue, as i thought I might be able to put it on the raw bones/meat that she loves! Anyway, I will give your dry suggestions a go . Fingers Crossed! ;) P.S. This is a dog who won't even try schmako's, scooby snacks, and runs away and buries the pigs ears instead of eating them! BUT she tries to eat duck poo!!! (A puppy thing I am told)
  15. Hey thanks., Might try Nutrience. I am thinking that the Prey Diet is not just raw meat and bones, as we were feeding her alot of that already. Will steer clear of the Calcium (not a vet that suggested it)
  16. Gee thanks for that. I also posted same q in Nutrition section as I did in this one by mistake! I might try to get the Pro Plan if its a winner taste wise. Do you know if I can get it in NSW (Newcastle?)
  17. Hi, Poor Sally (8 month Kelpie) has had trouble with her paws (limping) after too much rough play . Vet has said since she is a rescue Pup, and her Mum was in poor condition, that she didn't get enough nutrients in the womb. He prescribed anti-inflams which worked well, but for the long term said to get the best (Science Diet) dry food Pup type as for the added mineral etc, as she is prob low in calcium. I am also adding Omega 3 to her food. Trouble is, she is not very food focused, and I have to mix the dry with mostly pup mince. I can only get her to eat 1 meal (or 2 tiny ones) per day. The vet said 3 times per day dry. She really won't touch the dry on it's own, would prefer dirt! Any other brand people have success with a fuss pot Just wanting to get the best for her. Someone suggested Calcium powder to sprinkle on food. Is this OK? We also give her raw bones (chicken and beef). Thanks everyone.

  19. Gee thanks everyone, I know she's smart, but she can be a bit defiant sometimes! Will try to get a bell ASAP. Luckily no poops inside yet!
  20. Oh she has the softest most gorgeous bed money can buy...BUT she often prefers to lie on the hard decking or concrete LOL Any suggestions for dog vet chiro Newcastle/Lake Macquarie?
  21. Can you explain the bell? Is it like a dinner bell on a pendulum?
  22. Thanks again for the advice. I guess with the fully grown thing I was really after height, so the suggestion of 12 months would be accurate I guess? I am going to try resting her. It seems weird,as she ONLY limps after rest, then once warmed up is OK. I would love to get her swimming, but she only goes in with her doggy friends, and I will have to ban her from play for a while. Dog Chiro's?? Are they Vet's specializing only in orthopedic stuff? Is there any reputable ones in Newcastle/Lake Macquarie area? Ta
  23. Hey thanks. Rest you say, good grief thats going to be difficult! I have excluded ball chasing etc already
  24. Hi, Old dog used to stand at door and cry to go out to toilet. Pup 7 months goes outside only when taken "wee wee" and she goes GREAT!, but will happily pee on carpet inside if we don't catch her in time . Is this normal? Will she ever let us know like our old boy? TA
