Just read this in the local. http://www.theherald.com.au/news/local/new...on/2029229.aspx Good grief what is wrong with people who let their toddlers around dogs! I feel for the family, BUT a small kid can look like a toy to a dog. Poor dog being "euthanased". Why do some parents not take some responsibility! We have a "grandma" at our local leash-free with 2 labs. She routiinely lets her toddlers play around the dogs at lead off time. ANY dog might approach, and might result in a bad outcome. My young Kelpie almost bowled one of the toddlers over whilst playing rough with another young dog, I ran in to come between the kid and the dogs, her comment was "Oh don't worry he's used to dogs' !!!!!! \haven't these people got some reponsibility legally, in a leash-free time at least?

Hello everyone. Interesting topic! Our 14 month Kelpie has been scratching alot since the hot/humid weather. Took her to vet a while ago, as the scratch spots on her legs were bad and a bit infected. No fleas, but the vet said it could be an allergy...NO idea what to. He gave her some antibiotics and injection. All Ok for a little while, now scratching again! Sally swims 1-2 times per day, and we bath/rinse her in fresh each time. Should we be sprinkling some bicarb on her coat? Is the curash the same as the human one? Many thanks

So sorry to hear of your loss. Anger, and trying to find answers or blame someone is a NORMAL part of greiving process, albeit very painful. Maybe ring Lifeline honey, just to have a chat and BIG CRY....group therapy also works wonders. Years ago (before we had internet) , we had a locum vet tell us to give Panadol. Our dog fell really ill, and we looked at prosecution ONLY if to stop this BAD practitioner. We decided to just tell the usual vet (who was in the UK when we went to his vet surgery at the time of the locum), and ANY OTHER VET, so that the person's name could be known to the local body of Vet's. This way, no need to go into prosecution and give YOURSELF extra greif and misery, but the person in fault becomes known. I hope and pray that your pain will ease with time. Doesn't mean you will ever forget your beloved pet.

Congratulations to you for getting a pup from the shelter! We got our wonderful kelpie Sally from the rescue when she was 12 weeks old. I am learning alot about Kelpies, and there are some great people on this forum that help out with answers! Sally is MUCH different to our other dog who passed away last year. She is now 13 months old, fully grown but SO much still a baby! She is smart, and is very obedient, but when it comes to other stimulus (esp other dogs), she only has ONE focus...THEM! She is getting better, and once she;s had a little hello or play with the other dog/s she will come when called. When on the lead, I can't get by without my easy-walker lead. Its a front attched lead so she can't pull FORWARD. She can loose lead without other dogs around OK, but when close to other dogs she wants to pull with a normal collar attachment. We have tried everything, and she is NOT food focussed, so the treats don't work. We are really happy with this arrangement, it's a bliss using this harness after the pulling! One of the DOLers, a Kelpie person, said not to try too hard to train to perfection until kelpie 2 years old when they have their "Zoomies" out and become more "sensible" So maybe give this type of harness a go. Its much better on the neck Good Luck!!!

thanks again to you all, Yes I have used Frontline spot-on for fleas and it didn't work this year, but did a few years ago. |We are near Newcastle and a few others have complained. The cats seem to be Ok with the ticks, its Pup I fear for. But currently the frontline spray seems to knock 'em! One of the cats rubs upto pup so I might play it safe and try the other one, or go back to the Revolution, even tho it seems to loose it's effect. Might be the everyday swims can't keep Her out of the water!!

Is that available online?

Thanks all for your advice. Will check out that website.

Hi there, We use Frontline spray as we have ticks. works well, but there are still fleas on her! Have used Revolution with some success, but seems to only work 2 weeks (VERY expensive too). Anyone (with the problem please) use anything more effective, and with coverage for Heartworm as well? P.S. We also have 2 cats

Just Came Back From The Vet And Terribly Sad
sallyandtex replied to Moselle's topic in General Dog Discussion
:D That's really sad. I can't express how sorry \I feel for you, and I am sure many other DOLers have an idea where you are at the moment. You made the right choice and let her free of pain. Yes, the alcohol will wear off, and you will have to deal with the grieving process in your own time. RIP Sophie -
A Question About Two-tone Australian Kelpies
sallyandtex replied to koalathebear's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh thanks! I also posted as a new Q as i saw this topic may have been rested! -
Sally is now 14 months and still has floppy ears (and I LOVE them). Just curious, I have heard that about 20% of Kelpies have them. Also, many Kelpies (and other "working dogs" ) we meet are very focussed on their owner, and get a bit annoyed at Sally as she LOVES any other dog and wants to play and smooch them. Is she unusual in her glee in doggy company for a Kelpie? Thanks. :D

A Question About Two-tone Australian Kelpies
sallyandtex replied to koalathebear's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for starting this discussion, I am interested too! i haven't got a pic of my Kelpie, but she looks like your pic (above), except she has one spotty back paw and FLOPPY ears! (From the rescue so not 100% pure :D ) She is 14 months now. The floppy ears are extremely cute, just wondering if they straighten up with age or not?? -
What Floor Coverings Do You Have?
sallyandtex replied to sallyandtex's topic in General Dog Discussion
Was the slipping the main reason for not wanting the floorboards? -
Just wondering what DOL'ers have in their houses on the floor. We have a dog and 2 cats and the carpet is WRECKED!! Thinking about bamboo. Do others have floorboards? Do you clean them every day?

If it is within their policies and you can't get a change, something else to consider is putting up ads for your local rescues on the same site. Thanks All great ideas!

What The Rspca Dont Want You To Know
sallyandtex replied to mortonplace's topic in General Dog Discussion
I like to donate to org's that rehome, but understand that ,because of the many reasons discussed many times(irresponsible owners, pet shops, puppy farms etc), there are always going to be dumped and maltreated animals that are "humanely" put down mainly because there is not enough funds of space to cope. I wouldn't beleive everything you see on utube. I am glad you are passionate about animal welfare though. I hope you are also clued up on pig farms etc. ;) -
\Sorry to offend, you misunderstand me! I am trying to delete them FOREVER. But I am uncertain what i can do to stop them advertising on our intranet! Is there anything I can do? I will delete it, but i was only getting the opinions of those here to see if it really is a puppy farm or not. How do i tell? :D
-
Just browsing the staff intranety and found this ad for Shitzu-Maltese and "shnoodles" (not sure what they are). I am pretty sure its a puppy farm. Q) If a puppy farm, can |I do anything about it?
-
Just an update. Took Sal to vet. He couldn't say what the allergy was, but def an allergy to something. Put her on antibiotics and had a cortisone injection that stopped her chewing her leg. All is good now.
-
Oh., i spose I should have said "area" rather than "patch", def NOT "little" or "discrete". Will take advice on board. Ta

Thanks, will try that. Yes we have the W.D. weed, not a few weeks ago, it has come up after the wet, warmer weather.
-
Almost 12 months Kelpie. Noticed bald, red patch on hind leg (like it had been shaved!) with a few scabs. She's licking it. No fleas that i know (use Revolution with success) Definitely wasn't there yesterday, as I brushed her. Work mate said her dog is extremely allergic to Wandering Dew,a dn that would be the culprit. Any ideas? Also, what can I do to releive it. And I will pull any weeds out I see. Any other plants that might cause this? Alot of weeds since warm weather and recent rains. Many thanks
