Abandoned Dogs In Different Countries
sallyandtex replied to Elina's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thats great about the No pet shops etc. We could take a leaf out of Finlands Book! Just to throw another spanner in the works I love those Kelpie Pics!(Kelpie Kay) Wow the one with the cat is amazing. Our poor young Kelpie always wants to play with our grumpy cats, and often gets told off! -
8 Wk Old Pup Skin Reaction To Something?
sallyandtex replied to BMAK's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our other dog now deceased had a hive reaction to a bullant bite. We had to get him to vet ASAP as it was a severe reaction. Another Subsequent bite a few years later the vet said anti-histamine ASAP. If it has settled and happt maybe just take time to completely disappear, or can you ring someone(rescue vet?) to see if you can give the pup a mild anti-histamine in the recommended dose? -
What a great response. maybe you are heavy sleepers? My neighbour has a lab(Jet 2 years old) that has only recently started to bark each night every feew hours :D keeping me awake. I am debating whether to ask about this, hoping it's some sort of phase, because i don't want to be a "whinging neighbour". I know it's Jet as I see him in the moonlight barking and howling away!

Book: "the Kelpie" By Tony Parsons
sallyandtex replied to koalathebear's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was lucky and able to get mine from fishpond when it was $127 instead of the $149 it appears to be now. I had a peek and there's so much information in there, I'll have to take notes so that I can post thoughts in this thread as I go Hope you get your copy from the library soon! Yes, I would prob buy at that price...quoted $160 at the bookshop! -
Well y'know sounds great! How about finding another pup-pal in your 'hood and take turns like they do at Mothers' groups? You could do the minding the alternate days? And the added bonus of a playmate.

Dog Has Become Extremely Reactive To Other Dogs
sallyandtex replied to dee136's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree, but may I ask, has the behaviour started when you moved, or since. Might be a case of changed environment and stress. Can you take a drive somewhere more serene to walk the dogs? Just to see if the same thing ocurring. -
x infinity Agree, agree! Are you getting the hints yet? We are all concerned about this as it is a HUGE demand. Rememebr, as I said, if you leave one of the pups, they won't be "getting a needle" if it's a rescue, and you leave the pup still looking cute for the next customer, rather than try to rehome one of them in adolescence. It will be good for a good few months, not easy but when they hit 8-9 months the trouble will really start! Plus, what sex are they? I have read people on these forums say Female/Female can be real trouble . Even fight to the death (hard to imagine when they are cute pups). Being the same age they never knows whose boss.

My Border Collie Is Limping - Not Much Anymore!
sallyandtex replied to Lollipup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just my 2c worth. Our (now) 15month Kelpie had lots of limpy problems when a bit younger. She would limp after resting (after an earlier walk or play). Vet recommended Joint Guard to strenghten the joints as she was a rescue pup. A bit of a sceptic I am, but I tried it and it really made a difference. So much so, that when we stopped it (after a few days lag) she started the limping again. We put her back on it, and the vet said now she's fully grown we can take her off. Apparently some dogs benefit from this supplement lifetime, so if she starts again I will reintroduce it. For now I am giving her an Omega 3 each day and some tuna every few days. Good luck with it, and please post back in a few months to let us all know how your pup went and what treatment you followed -
Please don't make the misatke of taking them to puppy school together. You might be better with some dog mesh than those play pens for larger older pups. More work but peace of mind. You could have them side by side, but if they can see each other thay will probably pine for each other.

Do you guys think other dogs know when one of their pack is going? Since being chastised last night the younger girl has left Ricky be and is also giving me space to focus on her rather than needing all her usual attention. My sisters dog is also staying close but not intruding. Anyway, off to the vet tomorrow morning for a medical prognosis, which will then make the picture clearer. At least since she got dementia she has forgotten she hates to go to the vet! Last time we went that tail didn't stop wagging! Hope you get some sort of answers. Yes, i think the other animals have a 6th sense about death/illness. Did you see the story about the cat that sits outside the room of those old people going to die next? Can't remember the name of the cat. Hard time for you. My thoughts with you :D

Hey maybe there is a "doggy day care" nearby so if you want to go out for extended periods you have peace of mind. Also,. if there is other couples/friends they could "babysit" and vice-versa, if you have to go shopping etc,. :D

K9: to teach anything, you will need to establish a motivator (reward system) for your pup, then there are ways that you can use this with a method like show/place & reward system.. Yes there is a difference, in reality respect comes from discipline which is you setting boundaries for your pup... Consequences can be from time outs to physical corrections.. Just read the article , thanks. Have 15 month old Kelpie. She's doing OK obedience wise, but I am wondering about your "Consequences" as my hubby(OH) and I disagree. Had a personal trainer tell me (when Sally was about 9 months) not to use any form of physical punishment. I prefer to use positive reinforcement. When Sally chews something up, (example only), my OH goes mad at her, and also gives a smack (not hard), and she looks REALLY sheepish and then proceeds to sulk for a good half hour. I usually say Uh-UH. Thanks

Hi There! It's great you have decided to raise some pups from the shelter. I am SURE that you have done your homework! Just thought you might REALLY think it over if they are siblings and you have not brought them home yet (or there is a trial period). There is alot of good advice from the members on this forum about 2 puppies, and it depends on the temperaments of the dogs. Don't forget though, that pups will always be sought after, esp with a popular breed, so even if you took 1, the other would find a great home too! In my experience it's much better to have an older dog with the pup if you want 2. Theres' some great articles you might read over! Good Luck! http://www.cleardogtraining.com.au/index.p...q&Itemid=15 http://www.cleardogtraining.com/index.php?...or-one&cati

We had to let our 17 yr old staffy X ridge go 1 year ago. Vet said she doesn't see many larger dogs that old, but we had known the day was coming from about 1 year prior to "the" day. He was such a tough old bugger until then. Basically you will know in your heart. Zac was eating, etc but summer was very hard and he didn't really want to walk more than a very short distance. Many days he would just lie in bed. One day he fell over and gave us "that" look that said "I need to go to another place now", he had been looking like that for a few weeks prior, but this time we laid with him and cried and cried as we knew it really was time.I had to convince hubby we needed to let Zac go, even after we had him to the vets for that purpose. It's really hard, and how do we know if they are in any/much pain? They seem to stay around just for us. Its your personal choice, and the vet was SOOO kind and sat with us for ages and said we could talk more and bring him back in (go with some pain killers) but I knew that he would be MUCH happier to be let go. SO sorry for you, it's really hard.

Hey, Sally 14month Kelpie still licks. Its affection/submisive, and does it only to older/dominant dogs...and us! BUT I have taught her "NO kisses", and she knows I don't like it, but husband still happy to let her! At the park I also let her know not to if the other dogs don't like it, she responds for a little while LOL but if i keep saying no she gets the point. I think your pup will grow out of it, or you can partially train her out of it.

Have to agree with the others. Please keep little unpredictable one on the lead when there is any chance of danger right now. Just say a cat runs past and it's IRRESISTABLE to your little one. Plenty of time for serious training, and high expectations. You enjoy your baby!

Hello there. Not near the border, but 1/2 way between Newcastle and Brisbane is Safety Beach, near Woolgoolga. Exceptional place. 1 and 2 bedroom cabins. Dog friendly surrounds and near same(dog friendly) beachwise and lagoon. Too nice to only stay 1 night! Can be pricey in peak times (and booked) Check out "safety beach ocean bungalows" on google. Happy Holiday! :D

It worked! thanks Erny. She's not tearing herself apart anymore. You are a Godsend!

Sally (14 months) has got the itchies as well with the warm/humid weather. Unfortunately she also LOVES the water. A few months ago, took her to the vet when she had infected hair follicles from the scratching. He gave cortisone injection and AB's. He said she has an allergy but no idea what from. Cleared OK, but back again on her side, plus other spots she has nibbled. I wou;d prefer to try the calendula tea and antihistamines instead of more heavy duty meds form the Vet. Just a question for those knowlegable folks out there (seems it is a common problem ) (We have had dogs before without this horrible problem.) Should I give a Zyrtec or Phenegan only once or a few days? She's 20 kg.... And she has no fleas. And I have been keeping her out of the water, but it seems to be getting worse. Thanks!

My Dog Is Not Agressive Some Advice Please
sallyandtex replied to A and G's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ditto for us. If you are familiar with the people and dogs then Ok to play off-lead. If in doubt, lead up until the unknown dog passes. -
Be sure and let us know the outcome.

Your Kelpies are simply GORGEOUS! My girl is 14 months, and her ears still flop. I am told here by the good DOlers that there are Flop eared Kelpies! So she will look puppy-ish forever! -
