  1. What do dingos have to do with BSL and how is it the fault of the RSPCA? It may not be the RSPCA' fault but they support and enact BSL, and with massive government contributions is it any wonder. Support? Well I know Hugh Wirth is a supporter, but I'm not sure if he speaks for the whole of Australia. In fact, the CEO of RSPCA Qld has been outspoken against it. Enact? How? I thought BSL was legislation enacted by local governments? If you mean enact in terms of abiding by the requirements of the legislation, well what do you expect them to do? Break the law?? Massive government contributions? - you just might want to check that out. Qld govt contribution to RSPCA Qld in the last financial year was around $150,000 - around 1.5% of their total operating budget for the year if I remember rightly from their website. R$PCA supports B$L and receives millions Australia wide not to mention charity status to ... kill harmless pets. "Enact" by lobbying incessantly for the legislation even though Dangerous Dogs has nothing to do with them. R$PCA is culpable until it lobbies openly and forcefully for B$Ls removal. "Break the Law?" I'm sure whomever betrayed Anne Frank had the same fractured sense of morality. I much prefer Ghandi's way of breaking the law to change it.
  2. Presumably they can continue to skin them alive though!!!
  3. Extremist infiltration would explain a lot of things. Also suggests that the way to make the RSPCA more reasonable would be to get involved. WADR that would be like joining the Nazi party to save the Jews. IMO these thugs need to be challenged head on for the animal abusers I believe them to be.
  4. Killing animals to save them, yep the R$PCA really love animals. Sounds more like something out of 1930s Germany's euthanasia program of the mentally ill. Perhaps the court had the facts or were just biased against the mentally ill. Guess we'll never really know for sure as the political appointees sorry judges are beyond accountability.
  5. I think if you want to stay on good terms with your SIL and daughter you may have to just let it go. In the end they are over 18 (I presume) bought their dogs and can breed them if they want. You have done all you can. Be there as a resource as the more you tell people what they shouldn't do the more likely they are to do it. ie they will do whatever they want. Try some reverse psychology.
  6. Australia's native dog is also covered by BSL (great one R$PCA). We should be trying to liberate them as well as Greyhounds etc
  7. This is a common misconception. Rather than abusing him I would see it as an opportunity to educate him and hopefully his mates through him. There are many reasons dogs end up in pounds, oversupply is not one of them.
  8. You should see a dog as a deterrent. Attack training your dog could end up having it labelled as dangerous and all the BS that goes with that. If the person who attacked you was mentally disturbed or on drugs then no dog would have helped. Much easier to teach your dog to bark on command. If it did attack him no telling what legal ramifications you could find yourself in.
  9. Oft have I said that my breeds should be judged running around a farmyard covered in mud.
  10. So the R$PCA solicits funds to save animals then kills them. There is no doubt in my mind that if we had a RICO act in Australia there'd be some wellknown brownshirts doing time for racketeering offences.
  11. Strike up another victory for the R$PCA and their support for B$L. Is it possible to start up a media campaign for this poor guy and his pet? Anyone have any ideas? Maybe picket the council or R$PCA head office?
  12. And you make your judgement from a few lines in a newspaper... 23 animals, living in their own faceces and urine, crammed in one car together for weeks on end. Skin scalded from ammonia, infested with ringworm and fleas, dehydrated, getting no light, no fresh air, no room to turn, hardly any food. Oh but the poor woman had lost her money and had nowhere to live - and that makes it all ok I suppose? And remember, the magistrate is the one that makes the decision on whether to impose a penalty and how much. And the magistrate does consider the circumstances of the defendent. And that she has the option to perform community service instead of paying money. The RSPCA has treated the cats, brought them back to health and is trying to rehome them. Can I just ask all the RSPCA bashers out there - if it had been the police that had charged this woman, what would you have said then? Rather than help the poor woman the R$PCA took her "children". You can guarantee these denizens of animal rights will either kill most of these poor animals or more likely killed others so they could shelter them and bathe in the glory of destroying someone with obvious mental problems on top of her other problems. In my considered opinion when it's no longer possible to distinguish the abusers from the enforcers, it's time for a new organisation.
  13. Councils obviously don't want people to own dogs. Half of the problems with HA dogs is their lack of proper socialisation, due in part by councils forcing isolation of animaLS. I also have a problem with fining someone if their dog rushes at someone or chases a cat. If they are properly contained it isn't an issue. Most dogs near us, small, medium and large would end by dieing if this was enforced. No doubt it eventually will be, Our current rangers are an understanding lot.
  14. Mighty interesting, Amanda! Looks like the pet insurance business doesn't reflect anything about purebred dogs generally being riddled with health conditions. Insurance companies base their premiums on risk assessment. Insurance companies base their fees on what the market will bear. This is even more skewed in their favour with so few re-inurers. Australia does not appear to have an open market. What on earth does postcode have to do with anything. SG you are probably correct but it still sounds like stereotyping and pricegouging to me.

  16. Personally I feel the R$PCA have the best job in the world, bringing animal abusers to justice. Problem arises when it becomes impossible to differentiate the abusers from the enforcers. Then one knows there is a problem.
  17. The RSPCA don't seize restricted breeds dogs unless welfare issues are involved. Rangers and Animal Control Officers do that. Read the WE Oz's "The Usual Suspect" and talk to people whose whole litters have been killed by the R$PCA, then comment. They called for B$L and enforce it with glee. Now they want more money to enforce it. Is anyone who is aware of the history of B$L surprised, no they're not. On reflection I suspect you are confusing the RSPCA-UK's volte-face on BSL and will only involve themselves in welfare issues regarding breeds affected by S1 of the DDA. This does not apply to the R$PCA in Australia.
  18. These are not independantly derived facts but self-supplied stats. We don't accept anything the PM says without checking so I wouldn't accept the R$PCA's self-generated nonsense. Even the IPCC's "stats" on global warming were found to be less than truthfull and couched in perceived self-interest.
  19. If anyone wants to see what media spin can do, then this says it all .
  20. If the R$PCA stopped seizing and killing harmless family pets I believe they would get more support from dog owners. It seems that $35 mill is not enough. I wonder what the exec. salaries are and who are supplying their legal services? That is what I believe Mr Coleman should be addressing.
  21. Most oncologists don't have cancer. What's your point? Would you be suggesting that someone who doesn't own a problem dog can't help others resolve problems with theirs? Comparing an Oncologist (20+ years of study and experience) with a Dog Behaviourist (anyone can hang a shingle with that moniker on their door and quite often doesn't even have a dog). Now I really have READ it all! You can pay $300 an hour or approach registered breeders with the breeds involved who have had to deal with this problem before and are usually more than happy to help. They may even recommend a behaviourist they have used and found to be good value. At the moment from what you've described it sounds to me they are play fighting but make no mistake it will escalate. Your local CC can give you the numbers of breeders in those breeds. Good luck and please let us know how it all pans out.
  22. It was Vicki Hearne, author, poet and animal philosopher (not a wannabe like Singer) who first exposed the link between animal rights and animal welfare. They want to change the world and are prepared to bide their time. Their successes are mounting while the usual suspects squabble over what breed a dog is or what a wonderful and responsible owner they are while everyone else is a bunch of irresponsible rejects. They are happy to kill pet ownership by death by a thosand cuts than to ban it outright, as once it is banned their bloated salaries cease.
  23. I can only comment with my own experience. Are you sure they are fighting? I have two bitches who playfight while the males look on. These 2 bitches are desexed. They need to be separated when you are not around as when one decides to stop and the other continues it can get very bad. Do not let them run together when you are not there. Desexing may help, more than likely not. Desensitisation in a neutral area, a park is the best way but can take months. Make sure you exercise the dogs with long walks, a tired dog is a happy dog. Make sure they realise you are the boss by eating first and feeding the dominant dog first (make sure it is the truly dominant dog and not the one you would like to be). Unfortunately dogs are dogs and you may never be able to trust them alone together. I would contact other Mastiff and Bull Breed owners to see how they manage the problem. My experience is many behaviourists don't even own dogs. Talk to people with practical experience.
