A Few Issues With A New Foster
Burkes replied to Staffyluv's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Staffyluv, Please make sure you talk to your mentor about these issues as well. ARF are here to help you have have lots of equipment and people at our disposal. I can drop a wire crate off to you tomorrow if you want, they are definately helpful. We also have a huge library of books and other stuff like citronella collars. We also have lots of very experienced foster carers who are happy to help and if things don't improve we also have a behaviourist who helps us out. But it sounds like you are getting some improvement so that is fantastic! THe first week of fostering is always the hardest, it is always at that time that I wonder why I do it. BUt with perseverance it will all settle down. -
If you go into the members marketplace Frenzied1 is selling Tuffies toys really cheap!

The Australian Oh Jesus its a Poodle x Schnauzer ONE of the better gags in ABC1's At Home With Julia is the faux prime minister owning a terrier called Bill Shorten, a "portrayal" the human Shorten endorses. So we'll admit to dropping our biscuit at the end of yesterday's Insiders when host Barrie Cassidy informed us Julia Gillard and Tim Mathieson have a puppy on order: a snoodle (a poodle-schnauzer fusion otherwise known as a schnoodle) that will be named -- you guessed it -- Billy. With its dark curls and petite beard, the puppy shown bears a somewhat stronger resemblance to Gillard's media adviser, Sean Kelly, but that's a detail. "Is this life imitating the ABC?" Shorten mused to Strewth. "For myself, my first dog was a British bulldog called Harry. Great all-round family pets and great for political analogies: never, ever give up." Quite so. Alas, despite the tease, it turns out the pup's name is not yet confirmed; Mathieson will leave that decision to Gillard when he gives her the puppy on September 29, her 50th birthday.

I've seen it done with farm dogs. An older one teaching the pup. Certainly not out riding bikes round town though.

My thought are with the family at what is such a stressful time. My own two Rotts were also once stolen from my yard. I've never felt so sick and helpless in my life. I was lucky in that my two were dumped unharmed out the other end of Canberra and someone called me when he saw them on the highway. Fingers crossed that all the attention scares them into taking them somewhere safe where they can be found.

Adelaide Now SEVEN dogs are believed to have eaten their owner after he left them starving without food for two weeks, The Jakarta Post said today. Andre Lumboga's mutilated body was found with his head cut from his body Monday inside his home at Greenland, Batam Center, in the Riau Islands, a province of Indonesia. Seven dogs belonging to Lumboga attacked their master apparently as a result of being famished, police chief Eriyana, who uses one name, said. "The victim was believed to have had nine dogs as pets. He went to Manado [North Sulawesi] during the Eid al Fitr holidays, leaving the dogs for 14 days without any food," the newspaper quoted him saying. Two of the dogs were eaten by the others, Eriyana said. The seven surviving dogs also lashed out at police when they tried to enter the house. "We had to paralyze them," Eriyana added.

Talk On Pet Therapy For People With Alzheimers
Burkes replied to Perry's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just got an email from ACT Health. Due to low numbers the talk was cancelled. -
In my case I had a really horny female who did anything to get out to get a man She was a Bull Arab type rescue dog who was in heat when I got her so we had to wait to desex. She jumped out the front window of my house, htrough the screen and with a large drop, to try and have a bit of action with a stray Maltese walking past. Ohhh, I don't know how the breeders do it.

Talk On Pet Therapy For People With Alzheimers
Burkes replied to Perry's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
That is awesome!! Congratulations to Tank, Zephyr and Grumpette I reckon my Rotty would be awesome at this kind of thing, shes a bit too old and arthritic now. I'd have to push her around in her own wheelchair Its definately something I'd love to get into when I retire. With rescue work and shift work I couldn't fit it in yet. -

Thanks Perry's Mum. I have booked in to go, should be interesting. -
I doubt they will give any guarantee re dog chewing or digging it up. Like anything, if a dog really wants to destroy it they will. I probably wouldn't get it if I had a massive digger.

Dogs And Growing Grass With Success
Burkes replied to koalathebear's topic in General Dog Discussion
When I spoke to some turf places they said in Winter you have to keep the dogs off it for 4 weeks, or 2 weeks in Summer ARG! Hmmm, not sure what type it was but it was the second most expensive type they had. Yep, wasn't cheap. $2200 for an area about 10m x 5m. As far as keeping them off it in Winter I haven't heard that. We've got down to -8 here in Canberra and I haven't had any problems. In the summer it does get a bit hot but only in the real heat of the day when most dogs are sleeping in the shade anyway (well mine are). Smell wise - there is a smell if you stick your nose on it. If I didn't foster I would probably train the dogs to toilet somewhere else but I just can't be bothered. It is easy to pick up the poo and give it a quick hose if you get a sloppy one:) The price put me off for a long time but I think it is worth it. No watering, no mowing, no sowing seed, no mud all through the house and it looks fantastic. Here is my girl Sharon testing it out when it was first laid. -

Article Brisbane Times, July 20 2011 Pet food salmonella warning Do you feed your cats and dogs in the kitchen? Do you wash their food bowls and water bowls in the kitchen sink? A report in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) warns you're putting your family and the family dog at risk for salmonella infection. Many reports of salmonella outbreaks tied to pet foods and treats have been reported in recent years. Is the pesky bacteria increasingly prevalent, or is everyone becoming more vigilant? "That's a hard question to answer. We do have better reporting mechanisms," said Christine Hoang, a veterinarian who also has a master's degree in public health. She's the assistant director for scientific activities at AVMA, and educating the public is part of her job. No one should panic about any of this, she said, because "no one is at huge risk", although "salmonella is everywhere". The good news is, there are many tips to prevent the spread of salmonella. Pet water bowls, food bowls and the scoops used to fill them should be washed "routinely with hot soapy water in a sink other than in the kitchen or bathroom", says the report written by Kate S KuKanich, a veterinarian at Kansas State University. Here are more tips from the JAVMA article: - Wash hands with soap and water before and after handling pet food and treats. - Discourage young children, the elderly and the immuno-suppressed from handling pet food and treats. - Avoid raw-food diets for pets. - Make sure the packaging of all pet-food products is in good condition when you buy the items. Return products that appear tainted, discoloured or have a bad odour. - Follow label instructions for food storage. Dry foods and treats should be stored in a cool, dry place. - Many people transfer food from bags and boxes to "better" storage containers. That's fine, but hang on to the original packaging, especially the date and product codes, so that if there's a product recall for salmonella, you'll know whether your pet's food was affected. If your infection-control safeguards have failed, salmonella symptoms can range from mild to severe in people and in animals. Look for gastrointestinal symptoms, Hoang said. In animals, it's usually diarrhoea. In people, it can be diarrhoea and vomiting. Bloody diarrhoea is never a good sign, and should prompt a call to the doctor or vet. Go online and read the comments!!

My boy Duster's nose went pink and hasn't gone back. He has a few tiny black spots and that is it.

I can thoroughly recommend Canberra Pet Care at Queanbeyan. A lot of our foster carers use them when they go away and they are always fantastic. The programs for bush walks and playtime are great and the dogs always have a good time.

My version of that photo. Gracie the fosterdog and Indy the cat. :D

Ask on here, its an online forum for Canberra. I'm sure I've seen a thread on it before but I just can't find it. http://the-riotact.com/

How much exercise are they getting? If they are bored and frustrated they may turn that frustration into another form of release like digging or chewing. Otherwise i would cover the fence so they can't see through it if you can't block that section off. Maybe make other more exciting things for them outside too, hide food etc and take them for a walk as soon as you get home. After 11hrs inside they are probably just looking to release energy

Oooh, I could have used one of these. My current foster dog is a prolific fence jumper. I continue to keep extending the fence, have made internal fences, do daily training plus lots of exercise but as soon as I block off one spot she will find another....and she travels far!!! Because she is a foster dog, I need to essentially 'test' what her requirements are in regards to fencing and exercise. When I hit 6ft colourbond fencing all around the block as well as an internal fence 1m out from that I thought I had her beat. Nope, 5 days later she was gone again. Anyway, looks now like she will need a home with a roofed dog run, not easy to find. Or, she will just stay with me so I can make sure she is safe :D But this would have been soooooo handy on all those days I spent driving the streets looking for her. Miss Houdini
