What Do Behaviourists Do? Just Out Of Curiosity...
Burkes replied to Rilla-My-Rilla's topic in General Dog Discussion
There are two in Canberra that I would recommend. We have used both for our rescues and utilise their workshops for our foster carers. PM me if you want details. -

That's gorgeous! Hopefully we can get more updates when he is over in SA:) -
Or you could do it the opposite way? Take him out for a long walk then come back an pick Tess up to do the block when he is worn out and a bit slower.

Just make sure you don't give too much pumpkin. My Lab was on a diet and I think I may have got a bit overexcited with the pumpkin. He did an enormous orange spew all over my new white Sheridan doona cover - it stains

Cross Continent Road Trip With Four Dogs

Yep, I'm another one already enjoying the trip. Of my 300+ Facebook friends, Tlaloc and Rakim are by far the most interesting! -
Hi whwtfan, My 11yr old Rotty has also just been diagnosed with Kidney disease. Hers was as a result of bloat which she by many miracles survived. She is on the Eukanuba renal food and really loves it. But, as it is basically cardboard my vet gave me a recipe to make my own food (after a $5000 surgery at the emergency vet I needed it). She absolutely loves it and my other dogs are so jealous that I have to give them a little bit with their dinner as well. He got it out of a veterinary nutrition book. 115g low fat beef mince 2 cups cooked rice 3 slices bread 1 boiled egg 5g calcium carbonate I actually tripled the recipe and then baked a sweet potato and blended it with water to add to the mix. It is kinda sticky and gross but I rolled it into balls so she thinks it is really special. We also warm it up now it is cold. My girl also developed high blood pressure as a result of the kidney disease so that might be worth checking as well.

Is There A Staffy Rescue?

Has the old owner legally signed over the dog? Rescue will find it hard to help unless this is the case. -

Nope, only the one in Sydney as far as I know. -
Foster Failures And Continued Fostering
Burkes replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Yep, I have a foster failure as does most of our group. I think you have to look at it totally differently than someone who is a possible hoarder. Totally separate issues in my book. -
I've got a friend up there who goes to Malibu dog training. I've been checking out his stuff on Facebook and YouTube and he does some awesome work. He train cats too. Check out the videos of the rotties and cat - love it!

I gave a $25 donation to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah and as part of that you get their bi monthly magazine. Not local of course but one of the best I have read. Depends what you want to read about though.

Dog Escaping Yard Constantly
Burkes replied to animals forever's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Oh and I have three other dogs for company and she was getting loads of exercise and enrichement so for some dogs roofed runs or higher fences are the only answer in my mind. Sadly any form of electric fencing or zap collars are banned in the ACT. In my opinion much better the dog get a zap or two than escape and get run over or sent back to the pound and euthanized. -
Dog Escaping Yard Constantly
Burkes replied to animals forever's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have a fence jumper who does 6ft colourbond. She would go over my side fences and through several houses worth of escape routes to get out. Then I would get calls from two suburbs away. On my wooden paling fencing I used the lattice fence extensions from Bunnings. The colourbond was going to be very expensive to extend (she was a foster dog at the time - now foster failure) so I built an internal chicken wire fence about a meter out from the colourbond. She couldn't jump from so far out and if she jumped inside the chicken wire couldn't get a run up to go over. It's worked for me and was quite inexpensive. I've now planted hedging plants inside the chicken wire so it not only protects the plants from the dogs but once grown should help deter any jumping. Just for my own interest do you know if she had a temp test done by ARF when in the pound? I am one of the testers so would love to know whether she jumped out of our fence jumping pen during testing. It obviously only gives us an indication of whether the dog is a jumper but given the time restraints at the pound does give us at least some idea. -
I've used Pets at Peace twice now and they were fantastic. Little touches that just made it all less traumatic. There is another one that just opened up but I can't remember the name. That's the first bad thing I've heard about P@P though and through rescue I talk to lots of owners who have recently lost doggies.

Ohhh, that is great news!! I love finding out where they go and how they end up:)

Hi All, About three weeks ago my Lab was in a panic at 2am running from the bedroom to the lounge and back. I got up to see what the problem was to find my 11yr old Rotty trying to vomit. When I turned on the light I could see straight away that she had bloat. Her stomach was enormous, rock hard and out to one side of her body. I threw her into the car and straight to the emergency vet. To keep a long story short by some miracle my girl survived the surgery and came home a few days later. Anyway, now as a result of the bloat she is suffering from kidney failure and high blood pressure. I have changed her diet to the Eukanuba renal and she is on daily medication for her blood pressure. So I am looking for any health tips from those who may have lived with dogs with kidney disease. Best foods, holistic therapies and the basic do's and don'ts. I feel like the luckiest person in the world to still have her with me and the fact that my other dog pretty much saved her life is just amazing. Here is a photo of them together with my other dog Gracie...and the cat Thanks

Not sure how they got there but I have been at Queanbeyan pound when members of the public have arrived to pick up dead animals from their freezer. And on the show weekend (fireworks) the ranger was saying he would need to clean out the freezer for the new arrivals? I assume that means they even keep some bodies??
