I have a Lab and I had a Rotty until she passed a month ago. Yes I hate that people sometimes cross the road when they saw us coming, but I also hate how when everyone wants to rant about how bull breeds aren't bad, they pick on Labs and always use them on the other side of the example. I just hate people who don't socialise or control their dogs. No point blaming any of the breeds - even labs!

When I win the lotto my plan is to build a pet centre that includes a hydrotherapy pool for dogs. I've had one dog with bad arthritis and another who had TPLO surgery and would definately have used it. One day:) Good luck with your pup!

Oh wow, what a beautiful story. What a lucky girl Emma was to have you, and vise versa.

Sorry to hear about your pup Sway. Are there any breeders or rescuers of deep chested breeds that have an information sheet on bloat that you give to adoptive homes? I lost my 11yr old Rotty last month as a result of bloat. She amazingly survived a full torsion and had a pexy, but was PTS about 6mths later due to kidney failure. The vet believes it was the lack of blood supply during the torsion that caused the damage. Anyway, as a rescuer we often rehome bloat prone dogs do would love to have something easy to understand to give to both adopters and foster carers if possible.

Army Looking For Bomb Detection Dogs
Burkes replied to frenzied1's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I had a foster dog who was tested and went on the training but unfortunately failed in the gun shy test. They told me at the time that while in training they would be kennelled but work and train pretty much all day every day so they generally just sleep. When retired or if they fail or are injured at any time in the training the army rehome them. Sometimes it is hard to think about given the risk that they could be killed, but for me it is so great to see a dog working and doing a job they love. -
Helping Long Termers Find Homes?
Burkes replied to Aphra's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thanks for these tips. We have one long termer at the moment who is just gorgeous but can't seem to find a home. We've done a mixed video but one of her with her foster friends might be a good idea. -
We have just finished day two of three days worth of testing. There are so many worthy dogs. The only bright spark is that while we have been there the last two days there have been a few people in looking at adopting. Fingers crossed as we are really going to need all the help we can get. Oh,and the Wolfie X is a total smooch bag. She has been our tester dog and just loves lying around next to you.

I had a foster dog who had it done. Hunter was a 5-6tr old Rotty x something and we noticed in the pound that there was something wrong with his rear leg. Anyway, got the TPLO done and the recovery was amazing! We followed the physio program that our vet recommended and once able did strengthening things like swimming. He was with a carer who had never had a foster before so stayed with me for the surgery and recovery then moved back to them about 6-8wks later. He improved so much that he began jumping fences and escaping. Fortunately he made his way down to the local cafe strip and hung out at a cafe long enough for the owners to fall in love and adopt him. He is still doing really well and has no problems with his leg. He does show some arthritic changes but supplements are working and they have a pool so he keeps up his swimming and walking. Good luck with it all. It was definately made easier that he was crate trained before the surgery. There is lots of rest time involved.

Barking When We Arrive Home
Burkes replied to Dame Aussie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
When I was at the Ian Dunbar seminar someone asked about this and he recommended making the dogs get their chew toy (eg kong) as soon as you walk in the door each day. Then treating them for doing it. Eventually they will associate you coming home with them needing to get their toy. Apparently one it distracts them from barking and two they have something in their mouth so can't bark. Mine don't have this problem so I haven't tried it but seems to make sense. -
Oh yaay, poor Stormin Norman. Glad he is feeling better.
-
Mine have a dog door and full run of the house. They are usually pretty good but I do have foster dogs as well so occasionally they chew something. I just put things away. And don't leave anything remotely edible on the benches.

I've seen the ACT RSPCA do one for all their black cats. Was pretty successful from what I recall reading on facebook.

My pack plus two foster dogs. From the left Dusty and Sharon (mine), Ticket (Foster), Gracie (Mine) and Hunter (foster). Hunter had recently had crutiate surgery so he was tied up to stop him running off :D And Dusty, Gracie, Sharon and Kenny the cat. Just one of my cats missing. This was their tough photo with serious faces :D

Perth Now link A SIX-year-old girl was "a screaming ball of sand and blood" as she was being mauled by six dogs at a Baldivis property on Friday, her father said today. Maya, six, was with her father Bruce Wicksteed when the attack happened on Friday afternoon. Mr Wicksteed was visiting a neighbour when his daughter was set upon by three bull Arab mastiffs and three domestic dogs. Mr Wicksteed said that at first he did not realise his daughter was being attacked until he heard her screams. The owner of the property was laying down on the ground - six dogs were aggressively just going for it, trying to get underneath him and then I realised I could hear her screaming - I realised Maya was underneath them, Mr Wicksteed told the media today. Maya was a screaming ball of sand and blood. Police later told me she had been dragged over a 40 metre area. In an act that Mr Wicksteed said saved his daughters life, his neighbour jumped on top of the dogs and held them down to free Maya. Then, Mr Wicksteed grabbed her and ran towards the propertys house only to have the dogs chase after them. As we got closer to the door, I was just praying that it was unlocked, he said. I got there, the door was unlocked, just as the dogs arrived behind me. I slammed the door on them as they were jumping up. The young girl suffered horrific facial injuries in the savage attack and is recovering at Princess Margaret Hospital after undergoing cosmetic surgery over the weekend. She is in stable condition today. A hospital spokeswoman said today Maya was in a stable condition and was doing quite well. The three bull Arab-mastiffs, which have been voluntarily surrendered to the Rockingham pound, are believed to have lived on the property and used for pig hunting. Mr Wicksteed said he wanted dog laws changed to include bull Arab mastiffs as a classified dangerous dog. They are a killing machine - if a dog can't differentiate between a pig and a little girl, there's an issue, he said. Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said yesterday that the council was investigating the attack. Police are also helping with the investigation. The investigation will determine whether the owner should be prosecuted, if the dogs should be destroyed or whether they be returned to the owner.

Thats great Maree, the small dogs especially have amazing transformations since their coats are usually so dirty and matted. If you were a Petshop and came up with a weird name for it you could sell the 'gilgandra special' for a thousand bucks. :D

Sorry, on the iPhone so only wrote one quick thing. Perhaps volunteer programs that don't just walk dogs, but spend time on a quick training session to make the dog more rehomable. A dog could learn a lot in 14 days. For cats, socialisation time.
