A friends dog was diagnosed with MMM last week and is being treated with prednisone. Hopefully that means they are on the right track.

LOL, my curtains already have quite a bit of dog marks on them. I've recently put a sliding door pet door but it doesn't look good, and reckon bad for security. Easy to kick open. Oh yeah, they aren't good for security at all. I figure the 4 large dogs at my place will hopefully be enough. If they are that far in the yard that they are looking at the dog door they were going to break in anyway. I'd rather them not smash stuff :)

Help Needed For Mini Paws Foster Carers. Urgent
Burkes replied to Rozzie's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
She was advertising very recently (within a few weeks) on some Canberra sites. Hopefully some local rescues can help those carers stuck with animals. -
I live in Canberra and have a Pig in Mud door. I don't find it to lose much heat. On a really really really windy day the flap might blow open but I don't heat the house when I"m not here and when I am I just put the other door on so I can close it. In this extreme heat I"ve had the curtains pulled over it anyway and the dogs just nudge them aside and go through. Depends if you are happy to have dog nose all over your curtains :D

Great work MUP! We have had some gorgeous dogs come through from all three pounds. To think they may have missed out if just scary!

My order arrived today too, 3 huge boxes! Weird about the refunds. I ordered a harness that was out of stock and they emailed me to say that I had three choices, a refund, to wait for back order or to change the colour.

If she is around the Woden area I would go with the ACT Companion Dog Club at Narrabundah. The only private classes held near by that I know of I wouldn't recommend.

I like the sound of that!

Its something I'm keen to do as well dotdashdot! There are no hydrotherapy or swim facilties at all for dogs in Canberra. TAFE NSW runs a one day course. i think it is in conjunction with the National College of Traditional Medicine. The next one is in March 2014. https://www.tafensw.edu.au/howex/servlet/Course?Command=GetCourse&CourseNo=29175&tpInd=Y

What Alyosha said. It's a bit too hypothetical for me. What other resources is it guarding, how old is the dog etc I treat any dog as if it might be a guarder when it comes to bones. Always supervised and fed separately

Does Rescue Have Legal Guidelines
Burkes replied to animals's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
The dog should never 'miss out'. Any ethical rescue would take it back anyway. Things can get missed in vet checks, as long as both parties are in it for the dog it shouldn't really be an issue. Our adoption agreement states that any further costs after the adoption are the responsibility of the new owner. In saying that if there was obvious negligence by the vet we may assist on a case by case basis or we would take the dog back. -
Aww. What a sweety. I have found another that I want: http://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/253896 Good choice! Drizz is my foster. She is such a sweetheart, we hope she will find a home soon!

I've heard good things about Peter Barsoum of K9magnum training but haven't met him or seen his work myself so can't really say.

Hope we aren't going to get jinxed!!

ARF have rescued from Cowra before. I'm sure it was longer than a few days that the dogs were there as I'm sure that it took us a while to confirm rescue then organise transport. Hopefully the pound can work with her.

Ohhh, he is really cute. Hope he turns up Maree!

If you are looking for a purely positive trainer in the ACT I've heard good and bad about Paul Welch - the Canine Coach. He is Delta trained.

I feel for you Karley, fence jumpers are hard work! My own foster fail jumps 6ft fences and there was nothing except extending fences till she could no longer get out that would stop her. I tried everything! I'd be very careful though looking at a property though. The likelihood of a Bull Arab getting shot by another property owner would have to be pretty high. The RSPCA down here had a fence jumper recently so they fundraised for a dog run which the dog was rehomed with. But yeah, I'd be looking for a home with a dog run or that works short hours or from home that can lock inside. Good luck!

The dogs at DAS that are bought by the public get a voucher for desexing, it is in the cost of the dog, it is approx. $300 to buy from DAS, they have a certain time frame to get it done, they follow up but not aware of what happens if this is ignored. Your statement re: they only allow rescue in when the dog is on death row is not correct, the public get first option on the dogs, rescue always takes what is left, if the pound allowed rescue to take what they wanted that is "dog shopping" not " rescue" Maree CPR Yep, most rescues are glad when dogs get adopted, it means they have room for another dog that is at imminent risk of euthanasia. DAS allow breed rescue in all the time, but not if the dog has already been adopted.
-
Yep, agree. I've had fosters that have been escapers and between driving the streets for hours I was checking DAS website and RSPCA every hour or so to see if anything had come in. Also drove out in the middle of the night to check the drop off cages. People need to take more responsibility for their pets. Eight days is well long enough to work out where the pound is - especially if you have been there before.

Canberra Times - 2 September 2013 Canberra's Domestic Animal Services facility has defended its decision to put down a Gordon family's pet dog, 10 days after it went missing. There will be a review of animal control processes after mother-of-three Kayla Stewart said the family's pet ridgeback, four-year-old Dexter, was put down by staff before the family could collect the dog from a shelter. Dexter went missing on August 19 and staff at the centre and RSPCA officers told Ms Stewart the dog had not been found. On August 28 she received an eight-day-old letter notifying her that the dog was at the animal shelter in Symonston. The letter warned the dog would be sold or put down if unclaimed after seven days. When Ms Stewart's partner and son went to collect the dog, they were told Dexter had been put down. ''We have had a bit of trouble with our neighbours and they do complain about our dog so we keep him in a pen, but the gate was left open for some reason,'' she said. ''The staff were rude to my partner and didn't explain why they had put him down or anything. 'Everyone that knew my dog said he was like a big teddy bear … so I don't understand why he was given the needle.'' She said Territory and Municipal Services staff said the dog's body could not be returned to the family for burial ''because it had been taken to the tip''. A services spokeswoman said on Friday that a male dog, registered as a bull mastiff, was impounded on the morning of August 20 and staff tried to contact the registered owner by phone. She said the dog had been previously impounded and the subject of several complaints. A letter was sent to Ms Stewart on August 20 when the dog was determined not suitable for re-homing, and eight days after it was impounded the dog was put down. ''While it is unfortunate that the dog was euthanised one day before the owner made contact with DAS, and we are very sorry for the owner's loss, staff followed procedure,'' the spokeswoman said. Domestic Animal Services will review a number of processes for future cases, echoing calls from Ms Stewart for other family pets not to be put down. The spokeswoman said staff will consider posting photographs of all impounded dogs on the TAMS website and will attempt to contact registered owners by phone on the afternoon before putting down impounded dogs. Staff will also consider ''contacting the RSPCA and checking the TAMS website to see whether a lost report has been lodged that matches the impounded dog,'' she said. Ms Stewart warned other dog owners that their pets could face the same fate as Dexter. ''It shouldn't have happened like this. We are just so upset,'' she said. They look great Shipwreck, exactly what I am after. Do you mind sharing what they cost?

The RSPCA have always run classes so I assume it would just run as normal. There is plenty of room for dog trainers in the ACT IMO!
