  1. I've used the rolls when I'm desperate but it makes the dogs fart
  2. I've had both and they were both just as loving and gorgeous as each other. My Shep was probably more loyal towards me but she had been severely abused for many years so that may have been it. My Dobe was such a sweet and fun loving girl who just loved the good times and playing. Both required the same exercise. I don't have kids but would suggest both could be great family dogs with the right upbringing. Training, socialisation and the right dog for your situation is always the answer.
  3. One of our committee members is a staffy fan and regularly has staffy's and staffy mixes at her place. She is rural on 30 acres with horses, cows and kangaroos and the staffy's aren't any worse than any other breed to be honest. I think that it is vital that the OP find a rescue group who has dogs that live in a similar situation to the one in which they're proposing to put the dog. Being rural we get lots of enquiries from people looking for dogs to satisfy similar requirements. We always point them towards our carers who are on acreage to find them the right dog. Provided they're happy to wait we find that this is the most successful way of rehoming rescue dogs onto acreage. I agree with Trisven. Your best bet is to get one from a reputable rescue group. Most groups will have carers who live on acreages with cattle and will know the temperament of the dog. Have a look on Petrescue, so many dogs needing good homes. Are you limiting the size to medium because of activity levels or room? I foster large dogs and have had some of the laziest, quietest dogs ever. So easy to look after and not yappy:)
  4. Awesome, thanks for the tips all. I think I will try a couple of the freebies first and then see how I go. I probably will end up buying a Canon so if you get a program with that then great! Not htat I have anything against Nikon, I have just always had Canon's and they have been very good to me. My current DSLR is a Canon Powershot G5. Its so old, has been dropped 100 times and one corner got chewed up but it still does the job. Thanks again.
  5. Ok, here is my first attempt. Not really 'street' but I liked it.
  6. Hi DOL'ers, I have recently ventured out of the rescue forum to find this fantastic photos section. Loving all the threads and especially all the photos. Taking photos of my rescue dogs has opened me up to the world of photography and I am loving it. I am about to purchase a new DSLR (with help from DOL threads:) but am not sure what editing program to buy. Basically, most of my photos will be dog related with a few others thrown in there. I don't want to become a professional, but anything that will help my dogs find a home is great. Due to this limited use, I don't really want to spend heaps of money either. Is Photoshop the way to go? Is the most up to date version the best? What would you recommend? One example of what I would like to do is this photo of my current foster dog Gooby. A friend ran a quick 'edit' over it for me that made the colours a lot more vivid. I will probably get into cropping and stuff too. Thanks
  7. Can anyone make me a signature thread, please? I have just finally ventured out from the Rescue topic forum and am loving the Photos. About to purchase a new camera and some editing gear but would love a sig thread with what I have. Thanks Sharon Dusty Would also love www.fosterdogs.org in there somewhere.
  8. Bahahaha, typical stubborn Rottie. My girl will get in the car when we are going somewhere but when it's time to go home its a different story. Bribe all the way!
  9. Well as long as your balcony is safe I reckon these look pretty good. They are spring loaded doors which slot into your sliding door track and your door butts right up against it and locks in place. In summer you can move it from the glass door track to the screen door track. http://www.piginmud.com.au/joomla/pet-patio-doors/index.php
  10. Is he allowed on the couch at other times? Its hard to police it if the rules change at different times. I used to put a bar stool on my couches when I went to bed. After a while they gave up and moved back to their beds........ or mine
  11. My old girl is on Green Lip Muscle powder for her arthritis. It has made a huge difference to her mobility and as an added bonus she now has such a soft shiny coat.
  12. HaHa, working in rescue we have often discussed that we could probably sell our dogs mixed breed pound dogs for hundreds of dollars if we just gave them a mixed up name. Some up for adoption this week: German Husky (GSD X Husky) Rottiff (Rottie X Mastiff) Tettle (Terrier X Cattle Dog) Thank god we are not in it for the money
  13. My lab has somehow always known to go and get the lead and bring to it me when it is time to go for a walk. Now that I have a foster dog, he has also worked out that we need two leads. One night, it may have been a random coincidence, I told Dusty we would go for a walk. He trotted off and got the lead and brought it back. Then I was looking out the window and said 'oooh, it looks cold outside'. Off trots Dusty and comes back with my beanie. So smart. All my dogs also know the difference between work shoes and walking shoes. When work shoes go on they go back to bed but when walking shoes are out it is all systems go.
  14. CHeck out Tuffies. I have had my Mega Ring for about 5yrs. Its lasted through 2 Rotties, a Lab and several big breed foster dogs. Sometimes they bury it, then did it up months later. They are washable, if you do that sort of thing. NOt cheap but they are when you compare their life expectancy. Another DOL'er sell them from her website. http://www.dogtoys.com.au/
  15. I often encounter dogs off lead on my walks. I have been lucky so far not to have any major problems but as a foster carer to big breeds I do have to be very careful, especially when walking all three - and my cat comes too... offlead My problem lies in my back neighbours kids. Three boys aged between 3 and 6. They climb up onto the colourbond fence separating our houses and shout and throw things at the dogs. I have told them not to do it but the parents don't seem to care. Luckily my Lab couldn't be bothered to do anything, my Rotty is too old. But many of my foster dogs have issues which means I can't guarantee what might happen. Oh and I am sure that if the kid fell into my yard it would still be my fault if any of the dogs did anything, despite the torment that occurs. If the parents don't care, what can I do. Thinking about chilli powder on the fence
  16. I have my 9yr old Rottweiler on Green Lip Mussel Powder. It has made a HUGE difference to her mobility and has given her a very shiny coat.
