Apple cores!!! Whoops, I give the dogs an apple all the time

Oh, I had no idea they were toxic for dogs. I learn something new every day on this site. So I know about onion and chocolate. Anything else?

Whatever you do, make sure it covers ear mites!! My cat caught it off some feral down the road and now all three dogs and two cats got it. It is so hard to get rid of, espcially when you have multiple animals. Whatever I was using clearly didn't cover mites.

I use all of the above but now my lab is a bit on the portly side, I seal the ends with mashed pumpkin.

Warning over deadly dog virus VIVIENNE RYAN, The West Australian The outbreak of a deadly canine virus, with 20 recent cases reported in the Mid-West, has prompted a warning to dog owners to make sure vaccinations are up to date or risk a $5000 treatment bill. In the past two weeks, two Geraldton veterinary clinics have treated almost three times the number of parvovirus cases they usually handle, with many animals put down. "We normally get an outbreak when we start getting the cold weather but this year has been much worse," Sanford Clinic vet Alison Banfield said. "We normally get a few cases but we have had eight or nine in the past couple of weeks." Chapman Animal Hospital in Geraldton diagnosed 11 dogs with the virus recently and labelled it an outbreak compared with the half a dozen cases a year it usually gets. Murdoch University Associate Professor Peter Irwin, who specialises in canine medicine, said the increase in parvovirus could be because a lot of puppies were being born and younger dogs were more susceptible. "If their numbers are much higher than normal, that is a good indication that something is happening," he said. He was unaware of an outbreak in Perth but warned dog owners to make sure vaccinations were up to date. Parvovirus is a severe illness that strips lining from a dog's intestine. It can be prevented by vaccinations at six weeks, 12 weeks and a yearly booster for adult dogs. Julia Galvez, senior vet at Balcatta Veterinary Hospital, one of Perth's busiest, said the number of dogs with the virus was on the rise. "The numbers are not going down, that is for sure," Dr Galvez said. "We have an awful lot of dogs unvaccinated in Perth and they are a problem. "The virus is so highly infectious it just takes one dog with it and the virus goes everywhere." Last year, the Balcatta practice had 28 parvovirus cases and this year it has had 21 and expects more. Dr Galvez said some dogs were treated but others were put down because of the prohibitive cost of treatment at $4000 to $5000. She said most treated dogs recovered but it took a lot of work.

Hmmm, I might go check it out this afternoon. I did request lake access for swimming when the did the public consultation but ...................

I one brought home a foster dog who ended up having kennel cough a week later. All my dogs are vaccinated but one dog out of two also got it, one cat out of two got it, then I got it!! All four of us had to be quarantined in a sick bed. Fortunately the Canberra strain is not severe. Edited for spelling

Yaay Kirislin, aren't they just the best investment. All three dogs and two cats can use it now and I must have saved a lot in heating now I can shut the door at night. Love it, so worth the money!

Glad to hear Champa is OK Kirty. Venting is good, its a lot better to take it out on the keyboard than on the dog! My Rotty was a destructor dog also. After the 2003 bushfires burnt out my yard i spent $10,000 on landscaping to try and get rid of the burnt mess. Rommy ate 29 pittosporums, 3 japanese maples, 2 magnolias, my sprinkler system, the outdoor lighting cables, and went swimming in my water feature causing the pot to fall over and break. To this day my backyard is still just the mud and weeds that he left behind. He was a gorgeous dog though and I was very sad when I lost him last year. I was mad at him sometimes, but a vent made it all better.

Awesome pics! I love them all but I think my fave would be Lotus in the kitchen. Its a sight I know all too well.

My 6yr old GSD had similar symptoms when she had a small stroke. She was very wobbly, but was more drooling than vomiting. Her eyes were a little glazed too. The vet put her on some heart medication as he found she also had a heart murmur. The medication kicked in after about 5 days and she was good as new, probably better in fact. The vet said she could have lived for another week or another couple of years, there was no way to tell. She lasted another 9mths then had another stroke and had to be PTS:( Hope she stays on the improve!

Its not an Aussie site but book depository has quite a few books on training search and rescue dogs. They convert it into Aus dollars on the page and have FREE SHIPPING!

Oh, I'd put money on the fact PP paid for it! Maybe 'The Circle' could do a show live from a cage in the pound. Its hit minus 5 in Canberra lately, would like to see that!

same, I'll go back later too. May be with cross posting this into the general rescue thread? I'm sure there are plenty of people on there who would like to comment on the Channel 10 forum? I would, but I don't know how..... Or if that is allowed?

What the other said! Please don't take out your past bad experiences on this dog. I bet you would feel a whole lot worse if the dog did jump it again and die and you hadn't said anything than if someone told you to mind your own business. But good on you for helping.

I have gone from one to two to now three dogs, but the third is a foster. I haven't had any issues in relation to bonding as per what most of the others have said. You need to think more about whether you can afford two dogs. vet bills double, food bills double, worming doubles and poo usually more than doubles:). Perhaps you could think about fostering dogs. This is a good way to keep your dog happy and well socialized whilst saving a life at the same time. You can also suss out potential breeds and temperaments at the same time and determine whether you really want a second dog. Fostering has expanded the bond I have with my own dogs as we are always so proud when we find a rescue dog a new home. I think my two know they are doing a good thing.

I used to feed my dogs the Platinum dog rolls. It made them fart soooo bad and when they did a poo we nearly had to evactuate the whole street. I have now moved to kibble and raw meat/vegies. The dogs are a lot healthier and no more stinky farts. Their coats are a lot shinier too.

Oh, how cute. I really want a Greyhound as my next permanent dog.

Oh, Serenah I LOVE your photos and am so glad that you have found comfort in Red. He is so gorgeous and a great model. I always look at your photos and wish I could take something that is even somewhere close to as good. You make it look so easy! Is it rude to ask how many shots you take to get good ones like these? Maybe I just don't have the patience. If it is rude, sorry I think my favourite is the one with Ralph.

My dogs love the Tuffy toys. They are not cheap but they last so long you end up saving money in the end. I have had the mega ring for about 5yrs now. It has lasted through two Rottys, a Lab and quite a few foster dogs. They have only just managed to get through one corner of the outside layer. There are something like 5 layers of it. It was buried somewhere at one stage and then one of the fosters dug it up about 3 months later. Still all good. They are washable too if you are into that sort of thing And, they have awesome styles. I love the Lobster! http://www.dogtoys.com.au/

I cry too! It's great to see all the attention for the dogs. Wish Caberra had had some events though

I make mine a gravy out of Green Lip Mussell Powder, just a teaspoon of powder and hot water. Good for the joints, makes the fur shiny and they love it!

Oh wow, that is so beautiful. I cried like a baby. I didn't know Zero's story. Good on you Shell, I wish all dog owners were like you.
