  2. This freaked me out as my pooch is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, pedigree with papers. I called my Council, Mornington Peninsula Shire, and spoke to the head ranger (takes care of local laws for domestic animals). He assured me that MPSC have no intention of treating Staffordshire Bull Terriers as anything other than wonderful family pets. He said there was nothing to be concerned about, there were thousands of SBT's on the peninsula and the MPSC are are not going to wrap them up with the restricted breed legislation. He did tell me that the Shire has been reciving a number of calls about "Dangerous Dogs'. He told me that once they recived a call the Shire is required to visit the property and inspect the dog (again reassuring me his staff knew what an SBT looked like) and they make an assessment. He told me that although they had been reciving a number of calls, in the majority of cases the dogs are not pit bulls (again reassuring me his team is well versed in what a pit bull looks like) and in fact were often labradors or labrador crosses. He then told me that once they had been to your property and identified the dog, that they wouldn't be back if more calls were made about your dog. I aslo asked him if he was aware about SBT's being a target in Geelong and he told me he hadn't heard anything about it at all.

  4. Just ordered a Black Dog tuffy collar - has the shape I'm after and is designed for staffords (and rotties and dobes). I still want a fancy sighthound collar.. now just to figure out which one. Thanks everyone for your advice!
  5. Could it be yeast? Is the area often moist? You could try some malseb shampoo on it and see how it goes..? Or for something gentler a Calendula tea wash.
  6. Cute thread! My retirement dog is definitly a French Bulldog, though I can't ever imagine living without a stafford (or two).
  7. Oh..I'm so excited to hear they can be used with sucess on staffords...thanks for responding ReadySetGo! There really are some divine ones,I can already feel my credit cards groaning . Can you explain to me a bit more what you mean by size maybe an issue? Can the circumfrence be too small or are you referring to the width of the material? Yep I want the thick bit to be under his neck when we walk so that it dispurses the pressure, the staffy collar does this and it works well for us. I've looked at the martingales and wonder if they would slip off when there isn't tension on the lead to pull the ends together?
  8. I love the look of sighthound collars , like the ones in the links below, and have been wondering if they would be ok as an everyday collar for my SBT. I notice they come in a either a standard buckle or martingale type and the material can be anywhere from leather to rubber and silk. Vulcan currently wears a staffy collar, thick on one side with thinner ends towards the buckle. This design works for us which is why I've been thinking about whether we could use sighthound collars which have a similar design (and are much more attractive ). I haven't seen any sighthound collars in real life so I haven't been able to get a handle on strength, size or practicality of the different styles and materials for a staffy. Very interested to hear peoples thoughts on how a sighthound collar might work for an SBT... or what problems we might encounter if we tried one.. My link My link
  9. Cute thread! My faves have to be: Mornings.. when he abandons his bed for ours just to cuddle up with us and catch a few more zzz's Off-lead walks whenever they occur. Seeing him do his thing is a joy On picking him up from friends or family after going away on holiday...because they usually say "No you can't have him back". I love it that they fall in love with him too I love the experience of him learning through clicker training. Clicker training has given us a greater level of communication and understanding. When he plays soccer with his Staffy Ball in the evening. He makes excited yips, barks and growls that he never uses doing anything else. Right now..lazy weekend days when he's sprawled out next to the window soaking up the rays of sun streaming through. He has a unique contented look on his face when he's in the sun. So cute! Hmmm...I think the only time that isn't my favorite is when we have to be apart lol

  11. The only thing I've come across that Vulcan has seemed genuinely scared of was a concrete sheep (sculpture) in the main street of Berry NSW
  12. They have, and I was prepared to set something up, but some individuals are determined to make sure it becomes a negative exercise. I have been trying to google other means of donating. If anyone can come with any good ideas or want to collect the funds for "this community" let me know. I dont have the energy for further negativity surrounding this. All you were asked was why you didn't want to contact the paper? I gotta say... I too am totally confused about why you have taken offense. I'd like to help these people out too and don't know how. I'd be grateful if someone could shed some light on this
  13. That's pretty fascinating, and yes the puppy stealing part is distressing. I was astonished by the bit showing the baby baboons playing with the dog and the adult baboon stroke another dog with its tail. To me it looked like they were cohabiting rather than simply tolerating one another. Vulcan was very curious and put his nose right up to the speaker when he heard the pup crying. If you don't want to watch the puppy stealing go to 1:49 minutes in the last bit is quite sweet.
  14. Another bully owner here, of a young SBT. We live by the beach and have been frequenting dog beaches since he was a wee one. I'd say he's met thousands of dogs in his not quite 2 years of life, but I've only let him off lead play with a fraction of them. At nearly two years old he has been involved in 0 dog fights and I'd like to keep it that way for the rest of his life. That said he loooves other dogs, all other dogs, and will play for hours and hours with a well matched buddy. His best play mates are two other SBT's, a Bull Terrier and a Rotty. He also plays well with whippets, greyhounds and labs. I'm very mindful of his strength and his high energy bodyslam/wrestle play style. I never let him randomly play with strange dogs, I always clip him onto his lead when others come into sight. If the dog looks friendly enough I have a quick chat with the owner first to make sure the other dog is up for playing and is friendly. I don't usually let him play with dogs smaller than him as I'm worried they'll be unintentionally hurt. He doesn't seem to change his play style to suit his smaller play mates - they too get wrestled and body slammed. Play with little dogs is closely supervised and managed. He does however know a cranky old timer when he comes across one. He seems to respect the old timers signals to 'bugger off' .
  15. well said staranais *Nods head vigorously* That said our breeder tells us allergies are not in his family...
  16. Vulcan is allergic to lamb and sardines. Has been since we got him at two months old. I think he's also allergic to kykuyu grass, could be allergic to other environmentals - we havent had the test. All in all is pretty easy to manage. He gets yeasty itchy paws every now and then due to licking them a lot. We manage him by avoiding sardines (and fish oil in general), lamb and kykuyu grass and occasionally giving him a wash in calendula tea or malseb (depending on the level on severity) when he starts getting the itches. I was surprised about how many dry foods had lamb, sardines or fish oil in it. We were desexing anyway so the allergy factor didn't enter into the decision.
  17. Six hour drive for us. He was on my lap (passenger)or in the back seat. We filled up the stair wells and the back seat with blankets and made a nest for his dog bed in it all. The dog bed had walls which keep him from moving around much. I read about parvo after we got him home which made me freak out about the truck stop loo breaks we gave him...but he was fine. What I'd do differently.. I'd probably still have him on my lap though I'd figure out a safer option for loo breaks. Perhaps bringing a baby pen and lining it with newspaper (so he doesn't touch the dirt). I really freaked out about parvo when I realised it lives in the dirt for 12 months +
  18. We lasted three months after our old boy Olaf passed. It just wasn't the same without having a little furry mate around. I still wish Olaf was still with us, he would have been a lovely mentor for Vulcan. Vulcan is two in October. He's a very different personality to Olaf. Olaf was very mellow and a cruiser. While Vulcan has his mellow moments, his basic personality is much sparkier. We love Vulcan to bits
  19. I wouldnt call myslef animal 'lover' more and animal appreciator. I love MY animals, currently 1 dog a bunch of pond fish (native fish in one pond and fancy goldfish in another) and whatever wild birds, possums, reptiles and insects I can entice into my yard with indigenous plants and bird seed. In the past I've had horses, goats, geese, a pig, calves, guinea pigs, mice, ducks and cats. All of these have been much loved. I wanted my own flea circus when I was a kid and if I could have figured out how train fleas I would have. However I don't feel 'love' for all the animals out there, however I find many fascinating, beautiful and awe inspiring. I keep a healthy distance between me and spiders. I don't hate them, just prefer them well away from me.
  20. Aww he's divine. Congrats on the foster failure
  21. Wow, I'm feeling very pleased with where I live right now. My SBT boy is welcomed practically everywhere. Most of the cafe's here have waterbowls for the pooches and I've never noticed dirty looks from cafe staff or patrons. Nearly everyone wants to come up and pet him. The bottleshop people have made a fuss out of him since he was a wee pup and now he throws himself at the windows to get a pat from them, actually he does this anytime we stop wind the window down and a person appears lol . We do live in a pretty sleepy beachside town (well sleepy in winter wanyway). I heart my town
  22. Hi SecretKei glad you found someone who stocks it and that the pack is right for what you need I agree its an excellent product... Vulcan has a ruffwear lifejacket which is also excellent
