  1. Thanks for that sas. As I said, dog is improving with dad improving. The topical medicine from the vet is working on the hairless patch. It's not fleas, our dogs don't have fleas as they are not outside enough. If dad has to go to hospital I will definitely make sure the dog gets to the vet. I used the words "new age" as a bit of a laugh really. I know Rescue Remedy works for people, have never been convinced about the herbal drugs for depression in humans, prefer the cold hard science ones. I hear you about acting normally around animals too. Good tips.
  2. Wonder if anyone has 1. Believes in this 2. Has had successful treatment. My parents have a red heeler, she is a very sensitive soul. Since my father has had some health issues requiring hospitalisation at times, the dog goes into a shutdown and hides under the bed. She has even bitten a patch of hair out near her tail which has been treated by the vet. Thankfully my father is having more good days now and the dogs mood has improved. Is treating these things a bit 'new age" or does it work? I love all your stories on here
  3. Why the hell do people post on a forum FIRST before calling for a vet?? I agree, surely there are vet hospitals open 24/7. I know that people may not agree with me here but this is advice from the vet on the radio I listen to-little dogs don't need bones since their jaws are not big enough for the gnashing required. Having said that I do give my Silky half a chicken neck per day. I just love the way people on this forum say what they think in the best interest of the dog.
  4. I don't think there is no problem with dogs of any age sleeping on anyones bed, but that is me, I am a shocker for such behaviour As someone mentioned, just make sure the pup can get out to use the toilet.
  5. Such a funny thread. My parents have a redheeler that makes a nest in the backyard of various items of clothing she has stolen. We were babysitting it once and sons friend had taken off his socks and shoes. Later he said "I am sure I left my socks with my shoes" sure enough Rosie had taken the socks to the new nest she had set up at our house
  6. This has been an interesting discussion. I was bitten by the white puffball (hope you don't mind that expression) of a neighbour when I went to tell the that their other dog had got out. These people are very careful owners and I don't blame them for either incident.
  7. Great story about a dog. They put their lives on the line for kids
  8. Without wanting to appear like "nuttiest poster of the year" it could possibly have been a spirit. Dogs are very sensitive to such things.
  9. This topic is not really palliative, nor really Health. Our Ridgeback X was diagnosed almost 2 years ago with an osteosarcoma in her left elbow joint. The odds were not good. We decided to go with the vets advice and she had an amputation and chemo. As I said we are nearly coming up to 2 years since her diagnosis. I would have to say she is in remission. Apart from arthritis she is doing really well She has Cartrophen injections, Rimadyl tablets, Glucosamine tablets and Fish oil. All recommended by the vet. We also take her about once a month to the chiropractor since her remaining shoulder often "pops out" I don't want to think of the money we have spent on her. Suffice to say that our younger dog is fully insured.
  10. Our 20kg dog was recommended 3-6 1000mg capsules a day by the vet. She does have quite severe arthritis though.
  11. I think you should get your dog checked by the vet to make sure it is nothing serious as we did with our small dog. It seems to be a small dog thing. It was found to be the reverse sneezing and if you put your finger down their throat until they gag it usually reverses it. Or hold their jaw together so they have to breath through their nose. Or let them run outside and take a gulp of air.
  12. Oh, I think I have found my soulmates Man rings up the vet on the radio here. Wants to breed his staffy that just has one testicle because it has "a nice nature". Vet tries to talk him out of it but you know the guy is hell bent on his quest.
