There is a plant in our place that Oreo loves to bite the branches. We are going to get the panels from bunnings to section it off. I am in a rented place so cannot chop it down. Thanks for the advices. Oreo is now alone at home after having his lunch and went to the toilet. My gf and I are out getting our groceries done. Hope we can go home sooner as I am worried. Nic

Breed Suggestions For A Child/teenage Owner
nicolatu replied to Jodi1981's topic in General Dog Discussion
Talking about full on, I just got a border collie puppy. As you already know, border collie is a working dog and ALWAYS wants to play and run about so much. Being a 21 year old male, it's a bit hard for me to keep him off some things I don't want him to do so I am not sure whether it's really controllable by a 12 year old. But He is a nice little boy who doesn't cry a lot and learn fast(my puppy but every dog is different). I went to puppy pre school and the dog trainer warned me about BC jumping on people. You might want to look at Shetland Sheepdog(sheltie) and Japanese Spitz. They are wonderful breeds. Sheltie is lovely and very friendly. Highly suggest as jap spitz is low maintenance and beautiful. They will not grow too big so it's goodz My gf and I wanted to try big dogs as she already owned toy poodles before, if not sheltie and jap spitz is on our list. -
Hi BF I got an advice for you. Do the training in the crate and leave her there in the DAY. This way you don't have to worry about waking your neighbour up and still get training done. When Oreo just came home. He cries in the crate during the night so I have to get up to calm him down so he don't wake our neighbour up. My gf train him during the day. When he is put into the crate, he starts crying. Once he is quiet, he is let out. Keep repeating and the pup wil know making sounds will not let him out but keeping quiet will get him praise, treats and let out. Hope I am making sense. Just the way we do it. I might be wrong though. We trained Oreo to be left alone today. We put him into the crate with some treats and then we keep him in there while we do our household chores. He cries for awhile and goes back to sleep. Nic

Yes his crying is decreasing. We tried leaving him alone for about an hour few times. He just cried a bit and we ignored him. He went to sleep after awhile. But his biting is stil not good. Once in awhile if I don't give in to him, he wil go crazy and keep biting. We put him into a play tent and let him settle down. After that once he is quiet and good, we let him out. The puppy school is run by a professional trainer for a lot of years and he will be using positive reinforcement to run the classes.

Yes I have booked him into a puppy school already starting next Wednesday. We are crate training him but he came from NSW and he hates the crate after all the trauma he been through. But we are getting there slowly by feeding him and giving him treats in there. He cries when he is in there but we ignore him until he falls asleep. I just ran with him in the backyard and he is so tired now and just lying around while we are in the kitchen. I think maybe more playtime in the yard helps. Thanks heaps for the advice. Nic

I have spent time with him in the backyard but he prefer being in the house. When I open the door to let him in after walking around the yard and for toilet, he rushes in immediately so we think he loves being inside. Another question is that when I walk with him on the lead, he sometimes turn around and start chewing on the lead. Is there anything I can do? I have given him Kong to chew on but he loves chewing our hand as well. We gives out "ah!" and then stop playing. He then sits there quietly and we praise him for that. After that playtime again but he still chews our hand and sometimes it's quite hard that my finger bleeds. Are we doing anything wrong? Nic

He doesn't seems happy when we call him and looked at us like we are strangers. We have been accompanying all the time for the past 3 days. Is 3 days not enough for him to know us? Or He need a longer settling time? Unless there is food around, he won't come to us. We have taught him how to sit and we reward him for every sit he gives by food, play and pat. He sometimes just sit there and sulks so we think he is unhappy. Nic

Hi guys I was just wondering whether it's good for a puppy to have his walk on just footpath along the street? My Border Collie puppy seems so unhappy at home. I bring him to backyard for just toileting and spent most time indoor playing tugs and balls. Nic

Hi everyone, little update on my puppy Oreo. He didn't cry at all last night. Yay! We all went to sleep at about 11pm and he sleep till about 4am before he woke up and walked around the tent. I then went outside for toilet and he is good, well-behaved boy. He is so energetic and hopefully we can get to 16 weeks faster so all vaccinations will be done. Then we will bring him out to run and etc. Unfortunately he has an Urinary Tract Infection which is confirmed by the vet today and the poor pup has to get an injection. After he finish all his anti-biotics, we will take his wee sample again to get a more detailed test in the lab(hope nothing serious). He is so tired after going to the vet and he is now sleeping soundly in his crate. How's everyone's puppy? I promise piccys when my Internet is running. There is some problem with the modem being sent to my place. Nic

Hi guys I just got my puppy home the day before and he was barking all night. But on the second day my gf managed to let him know that making noises won't let him out. She did this by staying at the crate and accompanying the puppy. When he makes any noise, my gf just ignores him but once there is no sound coming from him, my gf open the gate a little and pat him. If he makes any noise, she straight away withdraw her pat and close the gate. With consistency, he puppy now know that crying won't get him anything. But he still bark a little. We managed to teach him to sit in 1 day(smart border collies!) so everytime he barks, we close the gate and ask him to sit(to distract him). He won't bark when he sits. Then immediately we open he gate and pat him. He seems to learn no sound=pat + gate open. I don't know if I am making sense and this is just my opinion. I am still learning as this is my 1st pup. So maybe the more experienced dog owner might know what to do. Nic

Ok I will get the puppy to the vet very soon.

Hi guys, I just picked up my puppy yesterday and found out that his wee has blood in it! I smell the blood in the wee. Anyone know what might be the cause of it?? Thanks Nic

Hi BF, Zorro (now known as Oreo) just won't enter the crate. I tried tempting him to go into the crate but he just get the food or toy out of the crate. Getting there slowly. I think he is just afraid of the crate because he came from NSW in a crate and then was put into our crate to be brought home. We were feeding in a metal bowl and he was playing with his own reflection ;) Silly boy! His teeth is really sharp, he tore through my favourite polo shirt :D and managed to cause bleeding on my skins with his constant biting and scratching. We will get there somehow~ Nic

Hi All, Last night was not the best night. Haha he started sleeping at around 11pm till about 2am when he decides to wake up and play. He hates his crate so we were letting him sleep in his play tent. He woke and demanding to come out. We ignored him and he got louder and louder. We were left with no choice as we heard our neighbour wake up so i went into the tent to accompany for him. After that he happily went to sleep. He wake up again at 5.30am and 7.30am so my girlfriend and I took turn to accompany in the tent. He is just so cute and very ACTIVE!! We were almost dead but he keeps playing and playing! Will update when I find more time. Nic

Hi everyone I just bring my BC puppy home. He is so playful and naughty as expected. I just managed to get sometime off after putting him in the crate. He is still whining and barking. Trying to ignore him. He just goes on and on. Am I doing the right thing? BF your pug is so cute. Haha hope to see more piccys. Those people whose dog is coming later. Try and get more rest while you can! They are a handful, I can assure you! Now I am on my iPhone Internet. When my Internet at home is up and running, I will post pics! Nic

Hi Marns, we decided to crate train our dog becoz we reckon it's easier to toilet train it and bring it around (Although I am getting a BC). Lol but I think crate is the way to start. I am getting my puppy on tuesday 12.30pm but I got lab class in uni. Maybe only my gf can pick him up. We will see how it goes. (maybe I don't turn up for the class!!). Haha puppy is important. I have been waiting for 1.5 years for my own dog.

Lola is so cute! I love the 7 week photo. Just lovely. You bought that bed from k-mart right? I think I remember seeing it. The rest of stuff is also beautiful. Yesterday my gf and I went to PetStock supplies to get some additional stuff. We have now got 3 toys, 1 puppy kong, crate, pet tent, collar, lead, bed, blanket, indoor toilet and eukanuba treats for puppy. All I need is food and bowls and ready to welcome my boy! So excited. 3 more sleeps to go before those sleepless nights everyone had been talking about. Haha! Nic

Hi guys, I got an advice on the playpen. My gf's dogs has it but it's actually quite dangerous. One of them tried to climb over and one of his foot got stuck. Luckily someone was there to save him. I read somewhere in this forum that a dog broke his leg while trying to free himself. Maybe you guys can find something to cover so the dog won't try to climb. I got a pet tent from crazysales website and I think it's good. it cost $110 but at least I don't have to worry when I leave the dog home alone. Costa is lovely. Is that a Hungarian vislaz? I don't know how it's spelt. Sorry. Haha nice name also. Jodi you got really nice stuff there. I am going to get some toys, lead and collar etc. Later on. Nix

Hi arjay I am pretty sure that crate would be the best way to keep the puppy in place. Use the seatbelt to fasten the crate in place so it won't move that much.
-
Hi Thanks for the advices. I remember that when my gf transfer money to me, it took only awhile. Maybe when the breeder email me again later on, I will remind her that it takes 1-2 days for the transfer to go through. Nic

Hey mich&jake, I told my gf that everyone thinks Oreo is a good name. We are serously considering this name now! I got a feeling that my breeder thinks I am nuisance. Lol I emailed her about the stuff I bought and stuffs like that. Even my girlfriend thinks I am a nuisance. Haha! Do you guys know how long it takes to transfer money online? I tried to transfer money to the breeder yesterday at about 6pm but she has receved yet.

Hi Saxon, My OH just loves naughty dogs that's why we get this boy. She has 2 toy poodles back in Macau with her parents and one of them is really naughty. But we love him to bits. This little BC we getting is going to be so spoilt. We just got a pet loo and crate from DealsDirect and a soft soccer ball from target. Will be looking to get his kibbles, treats, kong, lead, collar and more squeaky toys when we go to PetStock Supplies in the weekend. Hi BF, great to hear your baby is all right! Nicola

BF sorry to hear that. Hope your girl gets well soon. I am using the school's computer now so I am able to upload photos. Check out my puppy. Nicola

What is wrong with having grains in their diet? Can someone please explain to me? So instead of feeding Coprice, should I change it into something else? Thanks in advance. Nicola

Sorry I can't pose a photo yet because our Internet is not connected yet. I am on my iPhone. I will pose it up as soon as I get my Internet. He looks naughty and that is what we love! Haha! What do you guys going to feed your puppy? Our breeder is feeding her dogs and puppies Coprice. We looked at it and it seems pretty good and very cheap compared to other kibbles. Does anyone know is it good?
