K9 Force Handlers Workshop
MonElite replied to MonElite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
For those that havent been there. We had several dogs - rescues, borrowed dogs etc. We handled dogs other than our own, had to get pack drive happening, loose lead walking and a sit. We all did that, and the transformation in dogs was just amazing. Jbbb and I were handed in Yami a pitbull cross girl that was affraid of her own shadow, on arrival would not walk pass empty cars and if the lead was 20m long she would choose to hit the end of that lead and not even turn towards the handler. We all have seen her photos of what she was before, bones covered with skin that was one big scab. Open wounds around eyes and the saddes look on the face. Whoever did that to her should be shot. She has a long way to go but jbbb, Flames Daddy and I got licks on the face, a wag of a tail, we did belly rubbs, I inspected her paws, ears, mouth and she actually enjoyed it. As to one of the dobes that were there. I had Xena there with me. She isnt my dog, did anyone pick that? -
First of all K9 - thank you, for giving me and jbbb Yami (sp?) to handle - what a dog to learn on......... Any chance we could get some of the photos of her from "before"? As many of you know I had couple of private consults (first one being a real eye opener) went to several seminars and workshops with Steve. But yesterday was extras special. I think this was the best lesson in dog training I ever had. Its nice to see how some of K9s "magic" rubs off on to the others :D and what can be achieved with dogs. Especially one like Yami. I have one regret - I havent taken any photos for people to see what we all have done with those dogs yesterday. To those that havent attended - beg him to have another one of those organised.

Accident At Shopping Centre
MonElite replied to TwinSpirits's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Well my dobie has been to some weird places (protest against the war in Hyde Park, australia day fireworks at Darling Harbour), but I guess we might have to explore a department store one day. How do you get away with entering a shop like that with a large dog? -

How Many Words Does Your Dog Know?
MonElite replied to Lablover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have never counted how many words does my dog know but quite a few I think. Apart from the standard obiedience stuff such as sit, down, stand, stay, come etc he knows quite a few usefull words for being a good pet at home. Considering he is not a working dog, nor a competing in anything dog I think he knows a lot for a pet. Words he knows include names of people that he knows (not only family but my closest friends) At home Id use stuff such as go to bed give me a kiss, give x a kiss open (door/ gate) go to x person who is it? where is x? shake hands, give me other, give me a leg ( hind) in, out, off, on, over lets go, where is your collar?, where are my shoes? leave it, get it, touch it, drop it weaving, going backwards, doing circles, barking on command, heal to the left and to the right, play dead, bow and some other silly tricks. I can put words into simple sentences and he also understands. When I speak to him and there are words he doesnt understand he gets frustrated and whines. Too cute -

Sorry Hey Flames Daddy :D great photo of you and Flame btw. I spoke to jbbb and we agreed that all of it is MAINLY MY fault. Well you contributed by choosing the breed - gotta give you credit for that I directed you to the breeder, than I gave you a lecture at a dog show, than some more convincing at lure coursing. Finally told you about a dog trainer (I only partially feel responcible, Winterpaws has something to do with that as well, I belive) Now.... just picture how much money all of this has cost you :p Crates and entry fees for shows, fees and collars for dog training. Traveling time etc (im not taking any responsibility when it comes to your choice of a car) Plus jbbb still owes me coffe (only kidding - I dont drink coffe) All of that simply becouse I did a talk on Dobermanns at the Royal Gawd forbid you come to my place and my OH starts to talk to you about Ducatis :D -
How Would I Go About Training My Rotty To Lay Down
MonElite replied to Scope's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How about this You arrive home, get the dog out of the car put in in wherever it stays. You reverse into the driveway. Next day your car is facing the road you put the dog and off you go, you have no need to reverse with the dog. Yes I know that is not training that is management. -
Sutherland & Peakhurst Training
MonElite replied to Buster's Mum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
about 100, thats a wild guess, less if very hot or about to rain depends what level. Begginers usually 4-5 advanced 10-12 1hour, you are free to leave earlier if your dog had enough and "lost it" to join the club $25 for first year (it might be 20 or30 I cant remember) $15 for each year thereafter, plus $2 per each lesson you attend. yes bring vaccination certificate with you to be sighted when you join. You are free to come earlier with the dog and hang around to see what its all aobut and for us to play with the puppy  No. Classes are not run as per a tight schedule so you can miss a week, two or a month. You attend first class untill you are ready to graduate to second, than third etc. You do it in your time at your pace there is no pressure for you to move up. Some people go through all classes in a year others dont reach 4th class after 4 years. Its all up to you what you do, we just show you how, direct you and answer any questions you might have. -

two40 - ask away. -
Thanks wolfie - I have just learned something new! Yes I was referring to the Beauceron (poor speller I am) Funny how they will take the dogs of a breed we dont have in Australia... (or at least officially)
-
perhaps yb, I do know that baucerons are definitelly doing sch, and they are not listed in there.
-
From what I uderstand if you have a mastif you can do sch. I have even found a lab doing it. I dont know where did you find this "rule" but there are great danes doing it, baucerons, and they are not listed in there. There are certain breeds that will do better at it not becouse the temperament but becouse of the physical abilites they have. A mastif being a heavy dog might not have enough endurance to work for prolonged amonts of time, or might not be agile enough to do the high jumps.

I Need Clicker Help For One Of My Dogs
MonElite replied to Zenith's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Slightly off topic here My dog after being missing for two days developed a fear of loud noices, thunder, clicker etc (didnt bother him at all before) Thunder is the most annoying (for me) so I try to overcome this somehow. I have started trainign my dog some time ago with a toy as a reward, he goes mental for it these days. Each time when Im at home and there is a storm happening I take the ball and run to the park, and play and play with my boy. I get soaked, he gets soaked but while we play he pays no attention to the thunders, or if they are really really bad he sort of gets worried, but it certainly nothing like a clamped bum etc. I just hope that one day he will hear thunder and think - yeah that is great! -
I Need Clicker Help For One Of My Dogs
MonElite replied to Zenith's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I personally wouldnt use a click as a marker at this stage. Just get him used to the sound. Play ball, do whatever and let the sound be made somewhere else. BTW I dont train with the clicker, but if my dog was affraid of something thats what would be doing. -

Than make it a possitive experience, start with clicks far away so they are not so loud in his ear. You stay with the dog get someone to click at the distance. slowly bring the clicker closer over several days. -

Why dont you instead of a click do a verbal marker. -

MonElite replied to Buster's Mum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Peakhurst we go back 4.03.06 lessons start 3.30pm, be there early for vetting, plus if you need to register etc. Location is Gannons Park, there is an entrace from Robyn St, or you can park at the top of the park near the sports fields and take a walk down the valley (about 10-15 minutes one way) Look out for the black and tan dobe (in my avatar) and his owner..... you might end up in my class.... how scary
