Can you please share the tricks.

There are no perfect dogs (except Flame and Rex of course ), miracles dont happen (often ) F_D - maybe the one after and "out there" might mean not in Australia

Oh BTW have a look at these these dogs are not good enough, they dont have enough prey drive to do the work... has never done this before, its 2yo, barks at strangers, prectically fearless - will go anywhere, investigate etc has been playing with the ball like that for a while (about 6 months), will go on for 20-30 minutes with this sort of training, and the only reason he gives up is becouse he gets too tired. 6yo, extremly friendly to people, good nerves. Both not good enough........ lovely pets, great show dogs, fantastic family memebers. When you arrive youd be thinking twice before you enter the property. To do the sch or personal protection work not only solid nerves and are required but a very strong degree of prey drive.

It might come as a surpise to you but dog dont naturally protect their owners, they protect themselves... What puzzles me a bit is this. Your dog is 4 months old. You seem to know about what you want to do, and know about the temperament and initial assesment etc. Didnt you know that 2 months ago when you were picking up a puppy? surly if you had doing sch with your dog in mind youd investigate this prior to getting and commiting to a pupp. so why did you take the breed you have? I own a dobe, Im interested in all sorts of dog sports, sch included. Im about to purchase a puppy and thought that Id like to do personal protection with it.Becouse I know that the right temperament is required I started searching, possible sires dams, titles, breeders. Also becouse I want to show I look for excellent conformation in my next dobie. So i have found a breeder that I like, that will do the best to breed what Im looking for etc. I have looked at possible combinations of any upcomming puppies and got some dams assesed by a pro to tell me if the dams are "good enough" After hours of research and conversations with countless people I have been adviced that if I want a dog for personal protection I should change the breed............ or at least go to the working lines (but they dont have the conformation Im after....) Now - do I want to do that? What do I give up? A breed that I love, or the opportunity of personal protection training? this story is to ilustrate on how one makes decisions BEFORE they get the dog.

Hot tip for you organise for K9 to visit brissy and he will assess your dog..... BTW a good pro would be able to tell at thsi age if the dog has enough drives to do the work. Im a bit concerned when you say that it has a natural guarding ability at 4 months... maybe its just fearfull?

I know someone in Poland with two dobie bitches both with IPOII titles. The lady has trained the dogs herself, with a sleeve on her own hand, got a friend couple of times to do so decoy work, plus of course had some pro's decoys few times. If you know what to do and you somewhat imply that you do.... it cant be that difficult. Or are you after the social part of joining the club You can do ob and tracking in any club. Do you think that your mastiff can scale a 2m high wall? If you are so keen on the sport wouldnt getting a pro to asses the dog be a small cost to actially find out if the dog is good enough, before you got yourself all worked up on how cant you do it, where in fact it might be your dog that cant do it..... So did you have the dog assesed? I took my dog to sch club he got few nice pets from everyone there and since than we only watched others from the side line, as he just didnt cut the cake with his temperament. Where I thought he would...... but thats long time ago, now I have learned a bt more and I can see how he jsut doesnt have whats needed. BTW Im sorto of on yor side as well, but instead of whinging on how bad it is out there if you really want to do it you will find a way to train..... or get yourself a mission to change the rules..... If I manage to find some more time later this evening Ill put a belgian clipp taken at the nationals, than you tell me if you think that your dog can do this sort of stuff, physically not mentally

bex as much as I can see that you are dissapointed, and to some extend I agree with you about the discrimination of some breeds I can not go pass certain issues. 1. you dont need to go to a club to train for sch, there are professional trainers and decoys that have the bite suits and if you trained enough yourself you could get a decoy for some bite work. 2. sch training is mostly individual, once you learn the principals you train the dog yourself, to do ob and tracking part of it you can do it in any club or by yourself 3. in the club you might get 15 minutes of individual tuition from an instructor as each dog is trained on its own Instructors are volounteers.. 4. any club would like its memebers to participate in competitions, so in one way why would the club want to "waste time" on a dog that they know will not be able to compete 5. if you want to do some bite work you can do it with a pro dog trainer, many people do the first stages of bite work by themselves, they buy a sleve and off they go - no help required. Only help they could require is in issuing info... So if you really wanted you could do it, or are you concerned about the costs? Id like someone to tell us about retrieving trials, are dogs other than gun dogs allowed to train and compete or not? Perhaps this is more about keeping what the dogs ahve been designed for in the first place (not saying that the mastiff isnt a guearding breed)- if that was not the case we would have goldens doing personal protectio, dobes doing earth dog comps and danes in retrieving trials. What do you think? Plus if a 120kg mastiff was to do a chase and a bite on a decoy that would have to be one of a BIG decoy..... that not only can take the weight of a dog but the amount of saliva Plus a heavy breed like a mastiff - how could you not worry about its hips, doing those high jumps, doing that long fast runs to find the decoy... Im also interested inf you have had your dog assesed if the temperament is suitable for this kind of work, the fact that YOU want to do it is not enough, your dog has to have the right predispositions as well. How do you know it does? Who have you had to assess the dog?

FD It was POTENTIAL corrections, as you might remember some aversives are needed in training Or big door v's small door in order to make the right decision A Check out the screen shots...... oh and yes on some old tapes I have you and Bear jumping up on you ......... A1474 Its a great learning thing, do you think that I take all those clips of Rex to see how bad I look in the track suit pants or to see how bad is my body language when I train him :p -

I wonder what do I have to do to initiate "your" drive? Do I just swing a kong on a string for you like you do for Flame? -
Correct me if Im wrong but lets say for retrieving trials only dogs from gun dog group are eligible to compete? Same principal....

martingale collar or limited slip collar its usually a fabric collar that has a part of a chain that you can correct the dog with. flyball - dog sport a team discipline where two teams of dogs compete to get a certain amounf of balls out of the machine where on the way there and back they go through a set of jumps. -

wagsalot, is he useless on a martingale as well? I dont think youd have any problems working him on a harness if you insisted, you might be recomended someting different, up to you if you take the recommendation on or not. Flyball is on a weeknight at sutherland, they do a bit of obiedience than some flyball practicing. Remember you have to have a very good recall for it, under distractions, lots of dogs around. I think there is also a pure flyball club in the area, possibly called Hurstville flyball club, would anyone know? -

Sutherland & Peakhurst Training

stuffylovers, lets hope you keep up the enthusiasm for a long time. The most important tho is to take the info you will be given during class, take it home and train at home, in the park on your own, tahn you will see results. If you rely on a lesson a week in the club it will not be enough. Well it actually depends on your goals, but imho its a lot better to do 10 minutes each day than an hour once a week. Mrsdog - i only remember your girl, Ive seen her as a cutes puppy and how she was growing up to be a pretty young lady. -

staffylovers - Peakhurst rules are simmilar, just like any other club that is run by volounteers. lessons are $2 and we train on Saturday afternoons. All other stuff is more or less the same as Sutherland. Club in Peakhurst is smaller, it doenst offer some things that Sutherland does (such as flyball) but overall a good friendly club. It will not hurt if you go to both, I used to....... Mrsdog, I have now just clicked who you are, I always suspected but now Im sure. Hello, Its Monika, remember? I used to come on Mondays and Wednesdays with my agro doberman male, I often came with a girlfriend that had a dobie girl. And you have a lagotto, right? -
