Oh, in addition to what was said here already and in relation to the prong. Not every dogs needs a prong, not every dog needs a martingale. Its an individual thing. I have had a mally bitch in a class recently , on a flat collar and a halti. That is in one of the top classes, so the dog is fairly well trained. I asked the owner why the halti and if she would like to try to work the dog during the class on the normal collar she had (flat) she didnt want to telling me her dog is all over the place on the flat collar. I took the dog, did the magic trick I learned from K9 gave the leash back explained to the lady what needs to be done. She reluctantly worked the dog ont he flat collar, and after 20 minutes started to appreciate what she was achieving. She stayed back after the lesson and couldnt thank me enough, shaking her head in disbelief how simple that was. so a very large pulling dog DIDNT require prong, check, halti, or a martingale, she was fantastic on a flat collar.

Who? how? when? Ill telll you how I have overcome my prong problem, copy if you wish, or join me at my club ;) I was always acitve in my ob club, more as student, but helped to get the gear out, stayed back to put the gear back, refilled wated containers etc. Since my dog was dog agro "everyone" knew me. Instructors appreciated that I come every week and try. they asked me to be an instructor from the next season. Then Rex went missing (during the summer break) and came back somewhat wrecked and certainly mega dog agro. I wrote an article to the club magazine, and cried my heart out to some instructors. At the time I also seeked help from K9 and implemented stuff, that included the prong. Came to the club with the prong, told the instructors that I have seen the pro and this is basically what I have to do, so they have a choice of kicking me out or letting me do what a pro recommends. Becouse at the time I was undertaking the internal course to be an instructor and they knew me as a responsible person that tries to fix the dog, they let me stay and do my own thing. I said Ill hide the prong etc. Months went by and they could see that there is an improvement in my dog. Than I got the chief instructor on "my" side and she now is also a K9s customer. Although we dont promote the prong to the students, I certainly have achieved a blind eye - and to me that is all that mattered, in a way. so whoever is coming tot he drive w/shop - you can chat to the chief instructor of my club and ask directly if you will get a blind eye ont he prong if you join our club. Im not saying she will say yes, but what have you got to loose?

My dog definitelly does the same. All in a desperate need of some top of the tail scratching. He will come over for pets, and in no time instead of his head you have his bum  he moves his body along your hand slowly and you dont even realise that instead of the neck you have the back end to pet You stop scratching youll have a head nudging you again, you pet him, there goes the bum again. He does it to any human that lets him to get away with it. someone told me that it might be a sign of domination, wether its correct or not I dont know.

Probably A Really Stupid Question

This is doing some healing in Perth couple of weeks ago.Erika is a pure positive trainer and trains with food mainly as well as with toys. I will write her an emial and invite her here, but no promisses -
Im a volounteer as well, we have basic guidelines in the club, but each instructor brings something new to the class. Students often go from one to another and they are always told that each person has diff methods slightly, so try what works for you and your dog, we give you the guidelines. But the main principles stay the same and I beleive that is important.

Our club does. So does ours

Chicken You mean you didnt trust yourself and your training, not really Bear, correct? Its a great confidence boost to see yourself succeed. Keep on the good work, it all pays off at the end. Some instructors in my club got me to do a demo of my dog, this was to the begginers that joined about a month ago and were not progressing that well and somewhat loosing faith in themselves and their unrully dogs. So I was there to show them that training can be fun and can progress and everyone can achieve some level of control of their dog. I walked out with Rex in front of about 20 people with their srceeming unrully dogs and had to show them some stuff. Now you might remember Rex doesnt like other dogs... that was all off lead. So I did a sit/down/stand voice only followed by hand signals only, all at aprox 50m distance Than I did a drop on recall and few silly tricks that made them laugh, we finished with a bow and bark Maaaan that felt good!!!!! Keep on working Ali - more good moments will come your way.

Well done congrats. Recall IMHO is by far the most important comand the dog has to learn and its a pleasure to say to your dog COME in any situation and know that the dog will come.

LL I also find it fascinating re any dog training. So can you tell me what diff do the types of bird make? On videos they mentioned what birds will be at each point. isnt a dead bird a dead bird? ok smell differently but what makes it special Id like some explanation of rules as well. I gather there are tricks about dogs making it there and back and the straightness of line, probably something re handler directin the dog if the dog gets lost. Is there a time mesure involved? Oh and I guess the dog cant eat the bird on the way
-
sfg-shep if you are in Sydney I cant tell you who NOT to go to to train your dog, however you seem to be determined to train your dog regardless of methods, and potential reprocations of having such dog. You expect US here to tell you how to train a dog for personal protection? Next thing you will be asking is how to perform a brain surgery.... Perhaps you live a dangerous life, maybe invest in a bulletproof vest, they are cheaper in the long run than a dog.... Personal protection training isnt something you learn on the internet forum.

Id also like to know what is upsetting about those videos? LL - after your description of the rerieving traning Its obvious that there is more to it than meets the eye. I think its the same with schutzhund sport. It looks like dogs barking and hanging off a sleave. Its not as easy as it looks. I hope that some with more experience will be able to provide you with an explanation - just like you gave an explanation about retrieving.
-
I watched the last one of the 7 days from the ln=ink Lablover has posted. Yes - in my eyes that was a well trained dog but I can also see how someone that has no idea about retrieving trials (Im one of them) could think - after all its just a fetch of a dead bird with a bit of sniffing around t find one.. I guess that could be LL what you are thinking seeing a sch dog that only barks and lets go when told. What do you think?

try now, should be ok
