veru interesting herding guy, just made me realise that I have got one of each at home. Rex does the capture and hold down, Divani is the shake and kill type of a dog.

Aus - seeing the pedigrees of your dogs and knowing Flames pedigree I can tell you that there are no common ancestors for the last 4 generations. But Yes Flame is half Eurpean hence the fantastic head and good bone. (After all it was my doing in a way she exists........... ) oh such a long story.....

Prey Drive Control & Focus..
MonElite replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
of course sunny you can. Just not using prey drive training but other methods. You will learn about them at your lesson. You might be happy to know they are not difficult, in fact a lot simpler than prey drive training And castrating him had nothing to do with it. -
Prey Drive Control & Focus..

He either doesnt have enough prey drive or you supressed it. Id say he hasnt got enough, after all he is a son of Rex that hasnt got much of it. Just keep reading, it will click one day and you will understand it more or less. The key to developement is to play and finish before he gets bored, so next time he wants more of the fun. -
Prey Drive Control & Focus..
MonElite replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Prey drive and guarding instinct (which is defence drive) dont have much in common in a "raw" dog. I understand that your dogs come from working lines and have a stronger prey drive than lets say my show couch potatoes, but the only difference is that you need to satisfy the drive more than I do. Prey drive is a desire to chase, catch and "kill" the fast moving objects. You make it a person than you have a problem you are talking about, you make it a ball than you have a happy friendly dog. -
Prey Drive Control & Focus..

I also think that you consider prey drive as a bad thing in a way that your dog will be chasing some objects/aminals etc. If you teach the dog that you control the prey object there isnt a reason for it to chase other objects except yours. I have made the same mistake as Kavik and supressed the drive in my older dog, controlled him highly in difficult situations hence now he only goes into prey drive when we are alone and there are no big distractions, but will not in presence of dogs and lots of humans. The baby girl although weaker in nerves than him and finds crowds an overwhelming experience will with some time goes into drive and chase a toy in the middle of a busy street. Neither of my dogs are PP prospects and I have no desire for them to be in a way unfriendly to anyone ever. If you read this thread you would understand that those of us that want to train in prey drive encourage it instead of training it out of our dogs. (Although some made this mistake already, havent we Kavik ) -
I wont restle FD for a honour of which dobe is the most inteligent, but while Flame is digging holes (for whatever reason ) Rex has done my bank rec in MYOB. Herr Rott - you should see FD in real life............ Inteligent v's smart - owning only dobes I can say that Rex is smart but Divani is way more inteligent. Rex will find smart ways of getting away with whatever he wants to get away, Divani after learning to open doors from both sides at 3.5 months old watched me turn the key to prevent her from opening the door and the next time used her paws to pull the handle and the teeth to turn the key. So far at 5 or so months old she has not been sucessfull to turn the key, but Im pretty sure she will one day.

Dog Training....which One In House Or In Home?
MonElite replied to auzloz's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Im an instructor at Peakhurst, Ill be there this coming Saturday (providing the weather is better than last weekend) Im also a long standing customer of K9 Force. I can have a look at your dogs and give you few tips if you come to the club at Peakhurst but if money is no object just book yourself to have a lesson with K9 as and there is noone better in Sydney. sending your dog to someone for training is a really BAD idea. -
What Gear Do You Have For Your Dogs?
MonElite replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
For two dogs I have Countless nylon flat collars, not really used Each dog has a flat leather collar with a name tag Rex has a show off beautifull leather collar with metal bits on it 4 leather leads countless unused check chains Snake gold chain for showing Divani plated check and lead for showing Divani tiny leather lead for "in case" catch for agility another leather show lead extendable lead 30m parachute rope hmmm aprox 5-6 prong collars various sizes, designs, widths, types of realease etc ecollar - definitelly my fav piece of equipement leather check - never used nylon martingale leather martingale 3 kongs orbee crate leather jacket for Divani, weatherbeta jacket for Rex -
My dog is 6.5yo and I have bought a leather lead for him when he was biggish puppy. The lead is from overseas and its used pretty much every day. I cant really remeber when I actually "looked after" it, but its been in salt water, mud, sand etc and is soft and nice and I have no probs with it. My other lead is aprox 3 years old is also leather and a friend made it for me. I use both leads on regular basis and cant find anything better than leather. I also have a collection of leads from cotton, parachute cord, rogz, and who knows what else, but the leather leads are just THE BEST.

This is a martingale collar I dont understand what do you mean by those sort of collars being used on horses, or did you mean a head halter - Halti??? I have started using the ball in Rexs training when he was over 5 years old... sunny - you can teach Jones to do all that. If I could teach Rex there isnt a reason in the world you cant teach your dog. and hey there is one more movie for you since you like them if you liked that Karen I can assure you that you can have this with Jones, easy..... I swear Rex isnt that good, I have not trained him properly and dont forget he is dog agro. But hey this is something to aspire to (Divanis auntie) Sorry to take this OT, we should move our dobe talk to sunny's sofa thread -

Aus seeing you are new to DOL Ill show you my dog being "trained" in prey drive, "everyone" else here has seen those. Note my dog isnt an obiedience competing dog, he is a pet and a retired show dog. He also doesnt have enough prey drive to be trained in K9s method, this is just play and getting him to do few excercises. Not a training session as such, not a dog with a lot of drive either. It isnt a well trained dog, and my goal is to just have a happy pet. Is this sort of thing you do with yours? is there a correct way? why not a martingale for example? -

MonElite replied to wyvernblade's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
ahmmmm Im a long standing customer of K9s and dont train for protection, in fact my dogs are (apart from being family pets) show dogs.... I had a lesson a week or so ago for the baby, most of the time doing prey drive work, developing it further and enhancing it. My boy is trained to the level I set by the methods K9 set. He certainly isnt anywhere near to be classified as dangerous, quite the contrary in fact. (The dog that is, cant say the same about K9 though ) Pedigrees - yes please ;) -
;) ;) this morning I took the baby out for a toilet, yes in the rain and wind. She stood there roached and looking like a harbour bridge lifting alternative paws as the grass was wet..... I stood there in my pijamas getting soaked...... waiting for her to make the decision... Rex chose to hold the wee for a bit longer and refused to leave the house

How Do You Classify 'nerves'
MonElite replied to wyvernblade's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
gimme all the prey drive you are trying to deactivate ;) Im trying to activate more and more in my pet/show puppy. I feel just by reading the above that you dont have simmilar philosophy to K9, he is trying to develop more prey drive where you are trying to diminish it. Maybe the rest yes, but certainly not this part. Are you able to give me the parentage of the great parentage pls. by pm is fine if you preffer. Total dobermaniak here, thats all -
How Do You Classify 'nerves'
MonElite replied to wyvernblade's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
sunny70 - with the limited knowledge of assesing dogs nerves I can tell you that in MY opinion your dog has good nerves. Jones (son of Rex, and Bella) is very simmilar in temperament to his parents that were very simmilar to each other. K9 has seen my Rex several times and has told me that Rex has strong nerves, hence my conclusion is based on seeing your dog, knowing both parents very well and having the sire assesed. Both parents had low to moderate prey drive, which in a case of a pet isnt a bad thing, Bella had a marinally lower threshold to defence drive than Rex. If a dog is to survive in your household its gotta have strong nerves He is a lovely pet, Im happy that one of Rexs kids lives in your home, a good home for a dobe ;) -
Im sure this will be far less traumatic for you
-
yes it will be ok, but dont forget our dogs have bodies that are a perfect mould that fits the corner of the sofa, where the head rests on the armrest of the sofa. The doberman was bred with that in mind, Im sure ;)
-
Karen ;) just go an buy a new sofa, there is no way you will stick to this I know you and I know Jones and he is like his father in that respect. this is histerical, not even a day went pass But hey honey, keep it up, all my motivation with you if you need it, otherwise look above When we got Divani OH said - OK we will start right with this one, she wont be allowed on the sofa........ 2 hours later he is flat on the sofa baby on top of him I - Chris - what are you doing???? C - she is not on the sofa, she is on top of ME Next day - Chris why is the dog only half on top of you and half on the sofa? C - oh she just slipped a bit why do you always spoil things, dont you understand she has to bond to us? We are bonding here so I went onto the other sofa and boned with Rex ;) Where do you now find Divani now most of the time when she is resting? On the sofa but I have to say the other day wne she was absolutly dead tired she just went to her crate and collapsed there, she knows that sofa requires the "off" option where the crate doesnt have this.

Tip 1 - pack his toys and his bowl, place the dog in the car, drive to my place, release in my yard, drive away :D :D Tip 2 - does Jones know the word off? I think he does.. so its only a prob when you guys want to sit on the lounge but you would compromise him sitting there when the family isnt? why dont you place some dog bedding on top of the lounge and ask him to lie down on it, than with time move the bedding onto the floor, so he will recognise the bedding as his bed not the lounge. Good luck if that doesnt work there is room on a sofa at my place PM Troy he will move it for you
